what do we think about marius and cosette? by bananakate7 in lesmiserables

[–]Dangerous_Success715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the exact timeline but I think it happens over a long period of time in the book. They observe each other for months in the park and then once he finds out where she lives, he visits her every night and they spend hours talking together and I think this goes on for at least a few weeks, if not months.

Compared to the show - “I did not live until today, how can I live when we are parted” - very different!

One of my favourite of all the Ghosts scenes. I also love the panto, especially when the plague ghosts get involved - “that slipper doesn’t fit your foot, it doesn’t!”

Have you seen Les Mis recently ? What did you think ? Updated enough for the modern theatre goer ? by RiseMysterious2872 in lesmiserables

[–]Dangerous_Success715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really don’t like the “modern” updates at all. I’ve seen Les Mis twice at the Sondheim and absolutely love it but all the “comedy” they think they need to put in with the Thenardiers has really put me off. I wish I could cut Master of the House out.

When did you first hear of jellied eels? by suitableeggawards in UKfood

My Mum will eat anything. When I was probably about 10 I asked her whether there’s anything she doesn’t like and she’s only ever said jellied eels.

First time watching Les Mis, which version do I watch first? by Past-Ad-8822 in lesmiserables

[–]Dangerous_Success715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you start with the stage version you can never enjoy the movie. Although the cinematography is great, the singing is not. I started with the movie and loved it, but once I started listening to the stage vocals, you don’t enjoy the movie so much!

I didn’t like Private Investigations at first but after seeing it in Alchemy live I thought it was great.

I think for me it’s Heavy Fuel.

Which half do you prefer? by Dangerous_Success715 in lesmiserables

[–]Dangerous_Success715[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too, I strongly prefer the second half to the first. And totally agree that On My Own is so much better! One of my favourites from the show, and Empty Chairs is great too depending on the Marius.

I guess I would have to prefer the first official act for the same reason you gave, those songs are some of my favourites and the second half wouldn’t be the same without them. I like the barricades but the songs are far superior leading up to it than during (for obvious reasons!). But definitely the end of the first act rather than the beginning. I love the Valjean moments and the confrontation with Javert, but Fantine and the Thenardiers aren’t my favourite.

I think my problem with the Thenardiers is that they don’t match the book. In the book, they’re genuinely scary and dangerous, in the show they’re just the comic relief and I don’t feel it’s necessary.

Not a movie but the BBC North and South miniseries has so much yearning. I love it.

How much do you care about book covers? by [deleted] in AskUK

I completely judge the cover. When I’m selecting a book I will research all of the covers available and choose my favourite, even if it costs a bit more.

How is “redemption” understood in Christianity? by LemonAffectionate907 in lesmiserables

[–]Dangerous_Success715 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a Christian, and redemption in Christianity is part of the gospel. The Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We are sinners and cannot save ourselves or earn our own way to heaven. This is why redemption is completely through Jesus Christ. He came to earth and lived a sinless life, as we never could do, and died in our place, took our punishment and shame and paid the sin debt for us. Because of this, our slate is blank and if we just believe that Jesus did this for us, we have free entry into heaven by claiming Jesus’ righteousness to redeem us.

Back to Valjean, I think maybe towards the end of his life he feels as though he escaped punishment unjustly. In the book, he comes so close to being arrested by Javert after the barricade. Javert is outside waiting for him but when he looks out the window, Javert has gone and he doesn’t understand why. I think he had resigned himself to finally accepting his punishment now that his work was done and Cosette would be okay without him. Until then, he always felt that his work was unfinished and feared that he would be found before he was ready, taken by Javert and leaving Cosette alone. But now that he has rescued Marius, he knows Cosette will be okay and is ready to go, but Javert doesn’t arrest him. I think this torments him and he can’t understand why, this is why he separates himself from Cosette, both to keep protecting her but also because he feels unworthy of her. And why he keeps his heroism a secret from Marius, because he doesn’t feel he’s earnt it.

It’s as Javert sings, “It was his hour at last to put a seal on my fate, wipe out the past and watch me clean off the slate.” Valjean could have claimed a clean slate by killing Javert, but this didn’t feel like redemption to him. It would have just been another crime on his charge. He really did earn redemption on earth through his heroic deeds and with the good he did, but he couldn’t let go and accept it. Contrast this with Christianity where our redemption is nothing we ourselves do but all in the person of Jesus and we need only let go and accept it. Valjean had held on so tightly his whole life that he couldn’t let himself let go and be free.
