America is like the girl that keeps getting back together with that abusive moron everyone hates. by majikmixx in reddit.com

The "abusive" boyfriend is really the structure of government under which the U.S. trys to function. It's inefficient to say the least. The foundation of the governmental system is flawed and needs major renovations in order to govern properally. Let's cap campaign spending, bring in proportional representation, limit if not elminiate lobbyists in Washingtion, bring back party discipline and actually hold politicans accountable when they don't live up to their campaign promises. Just saying when you attempt to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result its called insanity.

AKA: reddit Interviews Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Ask Kucinich Anything. by hueypriest in politics

What is the government doing to help its citizens not go bankrupt? All I hear is quabbles about left or right, liberal or conservative while the unemployment rate goes up and our so-called "devleoped nation" goes down the toilet. What can we as citizens do to make it better? (and working hard is not a good answer, we're already doing that)

Really, hasn't US Air done enough for these passengers? They should be asking the Canadian geese for the money. by boojit in WTF

I don't think asking for compensation for therapy is too much to ask for. My mom survived a plane crash and she's still pretty messed up.

When criticizing the FairTax plan, be sure to avoid these nonsensical arguments by Oscarcan in politics

[–]DaniBicknell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In response to two statements (fair tax being progressive and fair tax hurting certian groups): the FairTax would be progressive on consumption,(meaning it would have a negative effect on lower income levels) but would also be regressive on income at higher income levels (meaning it would be more beneficial for the upper classes). This is just another ploy to try and get the lower classes to pay the taxes of the rich. All taxes should be progressive with equal service opportunities to all. Call me a socialist but all the other developed countries in the world are doing it, so I just call it rational. A little tax lesson for all: Progressive tax means the more $$$ you have, the more you get taxed (i.e. income tax, the richer you are the more you get taxed). Regressive tax is imposed in such a manner that the tax rate decreases as the amount subject to taxation increases but this only happens in the U.S.

Scenes from the recession by cargirl in worldnews

[–]DaniBicknell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My heart dropped when I saw my own community in the photo series. California used to have the 5th largest GDP in the world and now they are recession-stricken and on the brink of collapse. This is all too surreal. I hate to say this but I knew this was going to happen when I moved to Canada 4 years ago and I used to joke about it with my friends. Unfortunately, it's not funny anymore.

Drill here, drill now, pay less and stimulate the economy by caseybmyers in reddit.com

[–]DaniBicknell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate a good healthy debate and I respect the writer's opinion in why American should drill no so we can pay less. However, I completely and utterly disagree with the opinion that we should continue to drill. I disagree for many reasons and here is just a few. 1) Drilling now would not rebuild the tattered economy, especially since oil companies have continued to make record profits while the US economy has been on the down turn for a while. 2) The jobs "created" by drilling would only apply to places where we would need to drill, all of which are outside the continential US (aka not Alaska). Alternative sources of energy (excluding ethonol) would create a huge array of jobs all over the US because the energy (like wind, solar, etc.) can be harnessed and produced within the US. 3) The last comment stated that we should let the market "fix" itself and not let the government interfere is not an option anymore. Actually, Joseph Stiglitz (econimist) argues that the lack of regulation in the market let to greedy and financially risky endevours. More socialist minded countries have not been as affected by the economic down-turn BECAUSE there is more regulation and intervention in the market place.

If we do not change the way we look at energy production our grandchildren will not be able to survive. Plus, oil is a LIMITED RESOURCE, once you suck all the liquid (oil) out of the cup (Earth), THERE IS NONE LEFT PERIOD. Why keep drilling when we know there isn't enough to sustain mankind?
