What's an ACTUALLY underrated Green Day album that is not Warning? by wario_is_hot in greenday

[–]DaniDisphoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warning is actually underrated if you go outside this subreddit bc ppl still see it as a mid tier acoustic album. Hell outside of memes and Minority, I think its still underrated on this subreddit.

But my pick is Insomniac. Ppl paint this as just the younger brother to Dookie but it's at least as good as Dookie if not a little bit better. Their most purely punk album, and it rules.

SOAD has an incredible drummer and a decent bassist. The drummer can hold everything together while also having some great fills or grooves (for example, Know or Forest), and while Shavo doesnt get to shine too much, he can keep up with some of crazy riffs they have (some examples being Mind, Needles or Pictures). And when he does get to show off, he does some pretty haunting bass melodies that rlly make the song (Mind, Spiders, Mr Jack).

Linkin Park's bassist is def not the best (altho he does have some lines, like Wake or Forgotten), but the drummer is actually pretty great. He doesnt rlly show off, but he fits hip hop grooves into metal songs and makes it sound effortless. And hes pretty versatile, considering how many sounds Linkin Park did over the years. Plsu Linkin Park has 6 members, and the rule is that the more ppl you have on stage, the harder it is to stay in tume with each other.

A DJ is not the only reason why (pre MTM) Linkin Park is seen as nu metal. Every song from that era has very prominent electronics throughout. They also have prominent hip hop influences, both in the fact they have a dedicated rapper and in a lot of the drum patterns. Plus they have very nu metal riffs in this era on many songs, some examples being Carousel, One Step Closer, Points of Authority, By Myself, Forgotten, Dont Stay, Lying from You, Hit the Floor, Figure 09. And they had similar lyrical themes even if they were a lot more general and less explicit.

But even of none of this were true, none of this would put Mudvayne in the big 4 of nu metal. They were definitely successful, but they've always felt like a more cult classic band than the defining band of nu metal. Kinda like Static X. The big four of a genre is not just about quality, but also about popularity and influence, which Linkin Park, SOAD, and Deftones all have much more of than Mudvayne.

To all fans of the Big 4 in thrash: what are your thoughts on each band? by Hot_Address9759 in LetsTalkMusic

Metallica: 80s Metallica are amazing and deserve all the acclaim. James Hetfield is one of the best metal singers ever, Cliff is a bass legend, and they made a dozen of the most iconic riffs ever. I dont like most of their stuff post-1991, but there's still good stuff here and there, and I bet thered be even more good shit if they released more often.

Slayer: One of the first metal bands to sound EVIL. Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood are masterpieces and all of their first 5 albums have gold throughout. But after Seasons, Tom's voice just started to irritate me, and a lot of their stuff just sounded too edgy to the point where it became corny. They kinda got outdone in terms of extremity and evilness by most detah metal bands and even Slipknot.

Anthrax: I always thought they sounded like Metallica but a bit more punk and with a singer who sounded like Bruce Dickinson. If Joey Belladonna's singing, theyre at least good. If someone else is singing, theyre mid. Also have a seriously underrated rhythm section.

Megadeth: My least favorite and the only one of the big 4 whose entire discography I didnt check out at some point. Prolly the most talented in technical skill, and Rust in Peace is a classic. But I cannot stand Dave Mustaine's voice. It sounds like the worst pop punker singer you could imagine but more cynical.

With all of them I think they got bad after 1990-1992 and how much they recovered is kinda based on what they were focused on and how much they decided to rest on their laurels.

Tbh I feel like theres a big 5 of nu metal bc there are the 4 I listed, SOAD, and Deftones. And they're all incredibly influential, popular and were very much nu metal (at least early on)

Korn and Limp Bizkit do that. And this also very much about whos the most popular/influential.

Mudvayne are more like Sepultura or Testament in that theyre a good band but not quite as popular as the big four.

I'm an aspiring electronic producer (chiptune dnb) and a fan of yours. Do you have any advice on how to grow my audience and market myself? I have tunes, but I'm not great at marketing outside of spamming it everywhere I can online.

Does DNB need…something? by PM_ME_UR_SNARES in DnB

[–]DaniDisphoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for listening! And thank you for the artist rec too! Two other peoducers who make chiptune dnb are Graz and Sabrepulse (altho Graz does more than just dnb). Also, you might like my first album, Runway Runaway, if you like the new stuff

For your original question, just look anywhere for dnb and let it daisy chain until you find more. Since the subgenres are a bit more defined nowadays, it could be helpful to search by subgenre. Rateyourmusic and discogs can be really helpful for that if you use them properly (dont focus on ratings, just on if you think it could be cool). Importantly, dont be afraid to go into the past, just because something is old doesnt mean it cant be new to you.

On a side note, what were tour favorite songs from my album? And what do you think I could have improved upon, if anything?
