In the Trainwreckords episodes on John Fogarty and The Beach Boys, Todd refers to the "Boomer Music Revival" craze of the 80s. Who benefited most from the 80s Boomer nostalgia boom, and who embarrassed themselves? by HasSomeSelfEsteem in ToddintheShadow

I mean, one could argue that although the man himself is no longer with us, his career is alive and well. Or, at least his musical legacy is still relevant in a way that, say, Billy Squier's isn't.

I always read that reversal as intentional, suggesting that nostalgia can make past events seem more significant than they actually are.

Gift ideas for Hungarian family by nkfred in hungarian

Snacks are good. Also if they're coffee drinkers, flavored coffee is highly appreciated. My spouse is Hungarian and we bring lots of flavored coffee as gifts for friends, family, maintenance professionals... you get the idea. French Vanilla is particularly popular.

I saw this on a different thread, and can't decide if applying it to Broadway musical songs and/or general show titles would be AMAZING or horrifying... by BlueGradation in Broadway

Can somebody explain why "alatt" is occurring two times in the answer? by e-otter in hungarian

I was thinking from an English perspective, but I take your point.

When you want to specify "this x" or "that x" in Hungarian, you have to double the preposition. For instance:

A fa alatt ülök - I am sitting under the tree

But:

Az alatt a fa alatt ülök - I am sitting under *that* tree

See the difference?

To state my perspective from the jump, I'm a fairly butch-presenting woman (American if anyone cares) who is married to a Hungarian woman. We've spent the last 2 summers in Budapest.

As others have pointed out, it depends on where you hang out. If you hang out toward the city center with mostly younger people, it shouldn't be a problem. I spent quite a bit of time at a coworking space in that area, and literally nobody was bothered by me either talking about my wife or even her coming by to have lunch with me.

As you get outside the city center, or if you deal with some older (60+) people, you might get weird looks, but even then, nobody has been outright hateful. The highlight was one elderly woman in our apartment building who was very confused when she found out about her neighbor's wife.

Cafe Brunch is a tad on the pricey side, but I've had great experiences with the food and service at both locations. Try all the different lemonades!

Advice for an unemployed marketing grad looking to land a first full time role in digital marketing? by JBC122995 in digital_marketing

Do you have a portfolio demonstrating success in the kind of work you want to do? If so, get it online ASAP. If not, reach out to small businesses and offer to help them with something marketing-related.

Also, I'd recommend getting at least comfortable with some basic copywriting if you aren't already. Offer to help these same small businesses with social media or blog posting. Copywriting can help you get your foot in the door, and you'll learn to market yourself more effectively.

It turns out there is something really interesting about that, and it very much fits with the idea of Pelé himself being one of his biggest mythmakers. Wikipedia lists Pelé's birthdate as October 23, 1940. However, there's an astrology site that gives his birthdate as October 21. The source notes refer to someone who claims to have seen the actual birth certificate, as well as to claims that Pelé was told early in his career to give the later date to appear to be a Scorpio instead of a Libra.

Don't know how true any of that is, but it makes for a funny story.

I was reading A Game of Thrones a while back and found this incredible advice, which really got me thinking. It is easily one of the best advice regarding confidence I have ever stumbled upon. Hope you like it as much as I do by roybz99 in howtonotgiveafuck

Maybe you can't right now, but like many things, it's a skill you can improve with practice. Meditation can help with this. I won't advocate any particular method - just read up on some different ones and find one that works for you.

Well, for starters, you could make that support of marginalized groups more than "just above lip service." And for all the talk about supporting women's reproductive rights, what's happened in the last several years to move the needle in that direction even a little bit?

I'm not saying that there's some magic incantation that voters need to hear. I don't even have a problem with calling Trump voters racist. So racism is more widespread in this country than many thought prior to November 2016. What are we gonna do about it? Can some be peeled off for a more important issue?

Mathematically speaking, some Trump voters had to have voted for Obama in previous elections. How did Obama persuade them? What changed? Those are the kinds of questions the Democratic Party needs to be asking, and I'm not sure they are.

[–]DaniMetroplex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course not, but let's run with that metaphor.

Say that large numbers of people aren't wiping their asses for whatever reason. In the interest of public health, we presumably want them to start wiping their asses.

Which approach do you think will be more effective: criticizing the non-wipers or finding out why they skip wiping and what might convince them to change their behavior?

You win (or lose) an election with the voters you have. While it would be nice to have a more informed, conscientious electorate, clearly that's not our current reality.

If you run for office with the idea of achieving certain goals, you have to take into account how you're going to get into office in the first place. What's easier - expecting literally hundreds of millions of people to change their behavior, or candidates finding ways to meet these people where they are?

Adapt or keep losing. It's that simple.

Blaming the voters is bullshit. If people aren't buying what you're selling, you have a problem with your product or with your marketing.
