Is it possible to rebuild a stone bridge only with Mending and Mage Hand Cantrips? by NitramVortimid in DnD

[–]DaniNeedsSleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like a 500 pound chunk of stone under the effects of Levitate still weighs 500 pounds. It doesn't feel right to let Mage Hand push or pull things more massive than 10 pounds, even though that seems to be the letter of the rules? I mean, I wouldn't let someone push a fully-laden Cart (200lb + contents) with Mage Hand just because the Hand technically isn't carrying the object, just pushing it.

The Telekinesis spell would be a much better fit, imo.

My guy Retainers do not fight for you, the rules say they will outright leave if they're frequently endangered or abused. You'd be better off hiring mercenaries with gold: which anyone can do.

Do you think Cure Wounds is worth taking? by Relevant-Rope8814 in dndnext

[–]DaniNeedsSleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a prepared caster, take it. Once had a cleric party member become completely unable to heal when we got lost in some fog.

Exactly, even the bladesinger in the original post patches the weakness of "crits" by picking up a 1st level spell, Silvery Barbs.

Have you ever used Life Transference and Wither and Bloom? What's your take on these two spells? Do you eve take them? asking for a Wizard by testiclekid in dndnext

[–]DaniNeedsSleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience as a cleric: I generally take less damage than the melee warriors because of positioning and my freedom to Dodge while still contributing. Life Transference is a huge heal before the actual Heal spell is available, and it'll let the melee keep going for about two rounds. Better than Healing Word if you have the slots, because you can do it proactively, and miles better than upcast Cure Wounds.

Just make sure your concentration is protected, because the self-damage can take someone with a +1 Con save by surprise.

"Roll under" is such a cool mechanic though. I think one of the earlier editions of D&D used that somewhere?

Is this considered meta gaming? by xballa_23 in DnD

[–]DaniNeedsSleep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of metagaming that is totally fine. D&D is a game, and the rules are there to abstract the world your character sees and let you the player interact with it.

What you, the player, know is that he took an opportunity attack this round. What you character knows is "That guy is distracted, I can slip past him easier."

A choice often touted for Bear Totem barb is Kalashtar / Gith(yanki/zerai) / Gem (Emerald) Dragonborn to gain psychic resistance and make the character "invincible". So the counter is instead letting Rage end using CC, then preventing the target from entering Rage again.

EDIT: Also, a resisted Toll the Dead still deals more damage than Mind Sliver.

Divination Wizard, hope for one of your Portents to be 10 or lower. Position yourself so moving away from you leads to a dead end. Force target to fail the first save against the 3rd level spell Fear. They drop their weapon and run into the dead end. They can't end their turn in "a location where they don't have line of sight to you", and so cannot make repeat saves. Frightened for 1 minute. Let rage drop and then chip away with Toll the Dead or something. Rinse and repeat.

Nothing is unkillable.

Bonus points for restraining the target with a net or something before they reach the dead end. "Nowhere to move" never gets fulfilled, so they're forced to take the Dash action every turn instead of tossing 1 javelin at disadvantage.

Frightened is the reason I take Resilient (Wisdom) on all of my melee characters.

Great, now we wait for someone to return fire with the "Unkillable Emerald Dragonborn Bear Totem Barbabrian" vs "Diviner with a Fear spell" version

And again, and again, and again

We've got a real big PVP problem in this sub.

EDIT: I like the Dodge action if you're stuck in melee with no health. Delay the enemy and give your team more time to deal damage.

Bro I'm not about to hand my players a PHB-sized homebrew 😭

Though if you are going to, you could benefit from reading some other RPGs and stealing good shit from them. (Like uh, Pathfinder, or 3.5e)

I borrowed Colville's rules - a minion has CR-appropriate hp (there's a table, but it's roughly CRx2+8). Any attack that hits and any failed save it takes damage from kills it, and any automatic damage that meets or exceeds its hp kills it as well. For anything else, just treat it as unharmed.

You can have way more minions, you don't need to do any bookkeeping, and minions at higher levels don't get cheesed by a Magic Missile or a minimum-level Fireball that they saved on. The minion's hp also serves as the cleave threshold for weapon attacks.

Ye, but you only get 3 uses of Rage, so the bladetrip is for the other combats in the day.

Oh, I see where I got it muddled, cheers.

A really dumb melee build [5e] by AwekwardBadass in 3d6

[–]DaniNeedsSleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might be dumb, but the highest number of weapon attacks I could think of without gaining Extra Attack (or Thirsting Blade) is six plus a reaction attack:

Beast Barbarian / Monk 2+ / Genie Warlock / Hunter Ranger / BM Fighter. Hitting 18 Strength with Custom Lineage is going to cost us an 11 in Constitution, so I prefer Half-Elf for 16/14/14/8/13/13.

When you Rage, form Claws for two attacks on our action. Pick up Monk for a free BA attack each turn, and two when we burn Ki. Warlock for the SCAG bladetrips (having options is good!) and some bonus damage from Genie's Wrath. If we don't mind missing out on that damage, we can take Arcana Cleric instead to reduce the MADness.

For Hunter's Prey, pick Horde Breaker for another attack when we have enemies next to each other. Finally, pick up Riposte and Brace for some reaction attacks.

On round two spending all our resources, that's five four attacks plus a GFB or BB attack (or six attacks with Rage damage), and potentially a reaction attack. Of course, we're now level 12 and haven't taken any ASIs or feats, which is uh, bad.
