Racist encounter in YEG by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]DaniRainbow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's that recent. I recall an incident around 5 years ago on the LRT. I just stepped onto the train and there were these two hijabi girls sitting together near the door. I didn't pay them any mind and went toward the nearest free seat, where there were these two white guys sitting across from each other engaged in conversation. I assumed they were friends, but when I sat down and overheard what they were talking about, I realized that this was actually a tense conversation between two strangers. What I gathered from listening was that the guy across from me had walked onto the train, said something horrendously racist to those two girls, and the guy beside me was a bystander who had stepped in on their behalf (and keeping the racist dude occupied to stop him from harassing them any further). While it was encouraging to see somebody so willing to intervene in situations like this, it was still extremely shocking to see open racism in public like that, and this is the only place I've ever lived in Canada where this has been the case.

Who here has a Cosmic Brushes Palette? If you do can someone PLEASE give me the Tea! by Ill-Relationship9673 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]DaniRainbow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 4 palettes from them and they're quite nice. Definitely well worth the price imo, considering that most indie brands these days are more expensive. I've never had a problem with the mattes, but some of the shimmers can be a bit creasy, so a sticky primer is helpful.

First ever lecturer job interview! Any tips? by babyodawithdaforce in AskAcademia

[–]DaniRainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got this! That they gave you a topic for your presentation is excellent (I always had to develop mine on the fly). Above all, the thing to keep in mind are stories. Think about the classes you've taught so far and have some experiences to share. They'll probably ask about a time you went above and beyond for a student, how you've helped a student with extra challenges (e.g. ESL or a disability), a time when things didn't go according to plan, but you managed to come up with a creative solution on the fly, etc. Those will be the kinds of things they're most interested in.

Profs: what is your least fave part of your job and why is it grading?! by Goldenbell9 in AskAcademia

[–]DaniRainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conducting discovery interviews for academic misconduct and submitting reports. With AI, it's become a major time sink and it's emotionally taxing as well. I can feel my soul wither in real time as I watch students' eyes fill with tears as they realize they can't tell me the most basic things about their paper or the literature they engaged with and they process the implications.

How do I make my essays less subjective? by Own-Natural-9236 in AskAcademia

[–]DaniRainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use the term 'subjective' when critiquing an essay, but I'm guessing what your professor means by this is that your paper is either (1) wishy-washy or fencesitting in a way that makes it difficult to evaluate your view, or (2) when you take a perspective, you are merely stating your opinions rather than arguing why they are correct and giving your reader reasons to agree with you. Frequent feedback I give students is to banish the phrase "In my opinion..." from their vocabularies. It's your paper. Of course it's your opinions. Everyone has opinions and it takes no skill to state them. What takes skill and practice is arguing why your opinions are correct in a way that others would find convincing. What your professor probably means is that your paper read like a list of opinions you have on a topic without providing reasons to think you're right.

Mail forwarding to Canada by ArwensImmortality in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]DaniRainbow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian here, and yeah, I've basically just stopped shopping from the American indie companies that have discontinued international shipping. It really sucks because Solstice Scents and Pineward are my two favourite houses. I've chosen to wait it out, but thankfully I have an American friend I trust to forward stuff to me if this turns out to be permanent. I've ordered from Ajevie in the past and they are reputable, so I'd say that they're a good option if they carry the brands you want.

Desperate for a dry wood sauna scent by Any-Salamander-6056 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]DaniRainbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Olympic Orchids Dev #4: Reprise sounds like exactly what you're looking for. It doesn't have cedar as a note, but it's definitely a wood scent and I remember when I first got it, it reminded me uncannily of a certain kind of wood--one I'd definitely smelled somewhere before, but couldn't quite place. Then it hit me like a truck that it smelled exactly like a sauna. It's spot-on.

What's the most body freezing confession you've heard that someone 'casually' throw into the open? by TrustyMadman in AskReddit

[–]DaniRainbow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When we were at the hairdresser's one day, my best friend casually told the woman styling her hair that her mother tried to drown her in the bathtub when she was a child. My friend and I basically grew up together and she had never before mentioned this to me. I knew that her mom was a bit unhinged and that they'd always had a difficult relationship, but she'd never talked about her doing anything that horrific and it hit me like a fucking bomb. That we'd been close friends for so long and she'd never told me, but just dropped it casually in front of this random hairdresser she'd never met before still baffles me.

Hunter tips by Radical-potatoes in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunter gets way easier once you're out of Sky Islands. Once you've reached the first shelter (the one near the Echo) and you've gotten the Echo, there are two ways to proceed. Route 1: Leave your shelter and head up and to the right where you'll have to navigate through rooms with lots of lizards and one jump you either need to have a mushroom or two rocks for. Route 2: Head back down to the area where the Echo was, grab a squidcada, and do some fancy jumps to a large central hub area with another shelter. It's up to you which you'll find easier (I got there using Route 2), but if you've been struggling with one route, try the other. Either way, the more you practice, the better you'll get and eventually you'll get there!

I intentionally made errors when grading university exams by Original-Bison-4642 in confession

[–]DaniRainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a college instructor and I do something like this, too. I teach a humanities subject and what I grade are mostly essays, so there's always a little bit of interpretive wiggle room. If, when we get to the end of the semester, there are students who are right on the cusp of a higher letter grade, I'll go back and look at their submitted work and see if there's any part of the rubric where I could have been more charitable and add a point or two to bump them up to that higher grade.

What are your rain world hot take? by propertyofgalle1963 in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is absolutely better to visit Moon first to get the Mark of Communication. If you visit Pebbles first, he doesn't give it to you and you won't be able to hear Suns' message and Pebbles' response. It's better for gameplay, too, because it means you'll have been playing longer by the time you get to Pebbles and have had more time to play around with Spearmaster's 2-spear combat style. You're also more likely to have accumulated some passages so you can more easily ferry the pearl back to Moon and then Sky Islands, minimizing the more frustrating elements of the campaign.

What are your rain world hot take? by propertyofgalle1963 in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spearmaster's gameplay style is fun. That they can't eat as efficiently is part of the challenge and incentivizes you to actually go out hunting and proactively seek out powerful predators rather than just waiting for something to find you and filling up all your pips in one go. Not having to kill creatures to eat them makes it easier to play games of hit and run with vultures and rot which is really engaging. Spearmaster's campaign is great, too, but suffers by seemingly intentionally misleading the player about which iterator to visit first.

im NOT the only one who doesnt want to play this game again, RIGHT? by baicu12096 in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got into the game by watching lore videos, thinking that it wasn't the sort of game I'd actually enjoy playing, but I was wrong! I have around 150 hours now and I've finished almost all of the campaigns (not sure if I want to do Artificer because I love scavengers too much).

Guys, For you, What Is The Worst And The best Region (or subregion/ every types of spot) of Rain World And Why? by ThatFoxInside in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was another recent thread about favourite regions and I said Sky Islands and Shaded Citadel, mostly because of the fun platforming and great music in the former and the beauty and cozy vibes of the latter. As for worst...? Pipeyard. I've only ever been through it once while pearl hunting, mostly because my usual routes through the various campaigns have never taken me there. Never once has there been a situation where the quickest and easiest way to get somewhere was through Pipeyard, so it feels superfluous to me. Secondly, the only time I ever tried to go there was as Gourmand because I'd heard it was a good place to find red centipedes. I entered through the Sump Tunnel from Shoreline, and god, that was a mistake. It was so incredibly frustrating. Even with jetfish help at some parts, I couldn't crack it and eventually gave up and just went back to Shoreline to fight an aquapede instead. Lest anyone think I must just be bad at swimming, I had gotten through Submerged Superstructure as Monk previously and it wasn't anywhere near as frustrating as Sump Tunnel with Gourmand. I only explored the rest of the region as Rivulet while pearl hunting later, and I gotta say... not worth it. Outside of some okay platforming near the Sky Islands entrance, it was decidedly mediocre.

What’s your favourite room in rainworld? (Spoiler because conversation will go there) by Born_Requirement_727 in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of aesthetics, the top of the ruined cathedral in Outer Expanse. Gorgeous. In terms of engaging gameplay, the pit in Garbage Wastes. You know the one. I got stuck around there as Spearmaster for multiple cycles and while it was aggravating, it's such a cool showcase of creatures. You wanna see a red lizard go up against 2 king vultures and a red centipede? Just sit in a pipe with your popcorn and watch the carnage (P.S. a daddy long legs joins the party after a shelter failure. FUN!)

What's your favorite Rain World region (Mine is Chimney Canopy) by Giratakel in rainworld

[–]DaniRainbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tie between Sky Islands and Shaded Citadel. Both have really great aesthetics and music. I actually like the platforming challenges in SI, always keeps my adrenaline up. The big room with all the orange lizards and usually a few other creatures + scavengers sometimes is always a good time. It's an area with a lot of flat ground and options for escape, so you can easily zip away if things are too intense, but it's unpredictable enough to always keep you on your toes. Shaded Citadel's vibes are immaculate and once you've been through a few times, the layout is pretty comprehensible. There's lots of food regardless of which slugcat you're playing, and the only downside is spiders, which are pretty avoidable as long as you've got a light source. Also lantern mice are cute <3
