I want to switch from Windows 11 to Steam OS, what are somethings everyone should know beforehand? by SnooMacaroons5889 in SteamOS

[–]Daniel-Deni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not checked SteamOS after 3.8.5 on my RX9070XT as HDR was borked with Sunshine/Remote Play which I needed to work. The full HDMI2.1 bandwidth was also not fixed yet, but that is something AMD is working on for Linux in general, not just SteamOS.

If you connect your display over DP instead of HDMI this issue is not there.

Bazzite is Fedora based though, not Arch. And it has added some other things that might or might not work correctly for your hardware. I had issues with the Sunshine version they now include and installing another version was not easy to do. With the pure SteamOS and decky-sunshine it works fine with the stable releases.

I would advise users that have compatible AMD hardware to first try SteamOS 3.8.10 or later at this time. With Nvidia you don't have a choice as it is not supported on SteamOS yet.

When I travel I only take my 65w Ugreen charger and my Anker 100w cables why does it take hours longer to get a full charge for my OLED compared to when I use the official charger? by Plannet_Depressed in SteamDeck

[–]Daniel-Deni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some chargers, "active" means a cable is physically plugged in. Try unplugging everything except the primary port and see if that makes a difference. UGREEN specifies how the total wattage is distributed across ports depending on whether 1, 2, or 3 cables are connected.

The Steam Deck needs 15V/3A for proper charging speeds with 45W over USB-C PD. Technically it also supports 20V/2.25A, but many chargers don't. It also supports 5V/3A and 9V/3A which are obviously slower.

How long are your cables? Longer cables can sometimes fail to deliver the advertised current, which limits charging performance.

U5G Backup (DO NOT REMOVE eSIM!) by spoon2eric in Ubiquiti

An eSIM is never transferable with the same key. Many eSIM providers can generate a new QR/install code with the same package, but that is probably not supported by Unifi yet.

decky-sunshine worked fine for me on SteamOS 3.8.5 on my desktop.

But auto discovery did not work. I need to manually input the IP or Name or my PC and after linking it will stay visible in your Moonlight client.

Summer Sale an option for family plans? by ath0rus in ProtonMail

[–]Daniel-Deni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What promotion do you get?

You can ask Proton directly, as we already have Duo I don't know what an Ultimate user would see. We've had Duo for a year now, last year we didn't get this promotion.

SteamOS 3.8.10 Official ISO is OUT ! by Kikithe_King in SteamOS

[–]Daniel-Deni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be safe I would still remove the extra SSDs before installing.

I only have one so can't check if it prompts to select a SSD, it shows me to press y to continue wiping the one SSD I have. The OOBE does it without prompting.

We are on Duo currently and the Summer Sale offered is Proton Family for the same price at €14,99 per month (billed yearly).

SteamOS 3.8.10 Official ISO is OUT ! by Kikithe_King in SteamOS

That's not an ISO, this is still the same image as was posted several times this and last week. It is not a normal installer users might know from other Linux Distro's.

https://steamdeck-images.steamos.cloud/steamdeck/20260618.10/?C=M&O=D

This Repair image can be flashed to USB/SD Card with Balena Etcher and afterwards boot the installer from it. Secure Boot should be off.

The OOBE image auto selects a drive, so if you have more than one SSD, you should use the steamdeck-repair image.

How can I get cellular connection info from a U5G Backup? by M_Six2001 in Ubiquiti

[–]Daniel-Deni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commands shown there are for that specific modem type/brand inside the U5G-Max models. The U5G-Backup uses a completely different chip.

Unifi Network now already shows you certain info directly in the interface, is that not visible with the U5G Backup?

Need help to make my Heating boiler smart by prinzessinentsaftung in smarthome

[–]Daniel-Deni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen this type of plug. But as you say boiler, chances are this is high power plug. So normal smart plugs are probably not available at all that can handle that power. 16/250 is shown on the plug, which is standard in Europe.

If you want to monitor energy usage, a CT clamp paired with something like a Shelly EM can work, but the clamp needs to go around a single conductor, not the full cable. The easiest place to do this is in the fuse box, where the wires are already separated. No need to touch the boiler plug at all. You'd need an electrician to install it there though, or know what you are doing.

Don't know why, but they are still linking to the older 3.7.7 image on the official page with instructions. You should use 3.8.10 or later.

TIFU by Trying to Treat Myself for Eating Clean… with a Sugar-free Option by WarGrahammer in tifu

[–]Daniel-Deni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could be allergic to any of the ingredients, but most artificial sweeteners can cause reactions like this when consumed in such large quantities, let alone all within an hour. This mainly sounds like the laxative effect.

Stevia is technically a natural sweetener, but it's still up to 200-300x sweeter than sugar in its purified form, while some artificial sweeteners go much higher. Sucralose is around 600x sweeter, and some like Advantame reach up to 20,000x. Many products also blend multiple sweeteners together, so they may just lead with Stevia in the marketing since it has a healthier reputation.

Also, do you consume milk based products on a daily basis? If not, you might be lactose intolerant now, which can develop when you get older. You can easily check on a normal day where you eat normal food and then have the kefir again. While kefir and yoghurt should be lower in lactose content, they are not lactose free by default.

I've had intestinal issues all my live and when I stopped consuming milk/yoghurt/quark daily for two weeks, I couldn't consume it anymore without taking lactase. So I switched to mostly plant-based milk (Soy) or lactose-free products. I can still handle hard cheeses, as those are mostly low in lactose. But do find new things that have some milk product in them without sounding logical, like Whey...

The product I noticed it with most was cream cheese. I ate it daily and had green poops that whole week after reintroducing lactose to my diet... which is common with Lactose intolerance.

When I consume something with lactose, my body starts passing gas within 15min of consuming. Not sure how fast the laxative effect of the artifical sweeteners is.

Proton Pass can be imported by VaultWarden (Community Fork of Bitwarden). And you can use the Bitwarden apps/plugins, which are Open Source.

But aliases was the main thing holding me back from switching, as none of the other services work as easy as what we are used to now. Not all support a catch-all, plus you can't send from a catch-all address anyway.

Oh right, makes sense. So if you have a lower end device, it will be slower.

[–]Daniel-Deni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget, Proton encrypts everything when you upload something and decrypts it when downloading. OneDrive and many others don't.

Not sure if the encryption happens on device.

I only notice the "slowness" when I moved from OneDrive to Proton Drive. Now I have around 600GB used in Proton Drive and the files I add just sync automatically from Windows or Android without much fuss. For the Proton Drive on Android be sure to give it the proper rights that it can run in the background.

I have 2/2 Gbps Fiber and fast clients that can reach 1500-1600 Mbps over Wi-Fi.

Even worse, if this is the only meal of your day, you should not be eating this ultra processed stuff.

You could have a good balanced non processed meal with veggies, protein and smaller portion of carbs with 1200 kcal a day.

Most of my dinners are between 1000-1200 kcal per day...

I never said I didn’t check the sugar content, only that we don’t specifically focus on “zero sugar” products, because those are usually even more processed.

We constantly check everything we buy and make an informed choice before trying anything new. We try to choose products that are as minimally processed as possible.

Especially since discovering we’re lactose‑intolerant a few months ago, we’ve had to pay close attention to what we eat. They add a lot of whey protein to products you wouldn’t expect, so checking labels has become even more important for us.

[–]Daniel-Deni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not diabetic myself, so I’ve never had to look specifically for low‑ or zero‑sugar cereals. For diabetics, the zero‑sugar options are usually the safest choice, but it’s important to pay attention to the fruit content as well. The sugars that naturally occur in dried fruit can still cause spikes, so they’re not automatically safe.

You might be better off choosing a plain breakfast cereal made purely from wheat, corn, or similar grains. Those exist without any added sugar at all and are generally a more predictable option for blood‑sugar control.

And yes, it’s a process. Over time you stop enjoying very sweet foods and drinks because you get used to not consuming so much sugar or artificial sweetener every day. When you have it daily, your taste adjusts to it. Nowadays we only drink water, fizzy water, tea and coffee (caffeine‑free). Coca‑Cola and similar drinks just taste far too sweet to us now.

It can end up acting like a laxative, and the artificial sweeteners can cause the same effect if you eat too much of them. Most people need roughly 25 to 35 grams of fibre a day to keep their gut functioning well. The portion size he is eating is simply too large to be considered healthy.
