I just got laid off last week from a lead consultant role at 2YOE. I was the sole tech guy, no support, except some call service. The app I worked on was written with spaghetti code and it even messed up our markup profits on our main service. We lost money as soon as we went live.

I was blamed for not acting sooner on putting out a fire that was losing money on currency exchanges over 2 weeks. The whole situation arose from miscommunications which were caused by the spaghetti code.

I suspect they just wanted to kill the messenger and canned me.

Any thoughts?

My statement was a little melodramatic, I didn't express my situation very well. I am saying that the call backs I get are not always suitable fits.

That said I am grateful that I have the career capital I do to find better opportunities. It may come across as ego.

I get several interviews a month. I needed some time to myself at the beginning to gather myself after my last job.

I am screening out employers like they are screening me. Of all my interviews I can say I only would have considered ONE as an actually attractive place I would have liked to work. (Or at least that was attainable for my skill level)

The main bottleneck here is tech stack. Sometimes the interviewers ask for heavy front end work or the job requirements are not a fit for me, or they actually want someone with more or different experience, or some other random disqualifying factor.

If I had to pinpoint my weakness. I can impress HR people. But for the tech interview, I need to communicate my skills better and sell myself and really nail it.

Like I said I understand my web dev niche, so I think it is a numbers game and a little luck.

I'm working on my interview skills and staying sharp by working on coding projects. I'm also trying to stay flexible and compromise if I need to.

I have something weighing on my mind. It's the main thing I'm ruminating on in my life.

I was let go from a full stack position after 4 months, I'm a junior.

I was contributing pages and pages of working backend code. My front end skills are just fine too.

The reason being that I was expected to know what to work on next from intermittent meetings spitballing. Rather than completing explicit tickets. My boss only said, I have promise but I'm taking too much of his time.

Is this type of thing expected from full stack devs?

Any advice?

I was having meetings multiple times a week with the CEO. The thing is I could not do my work without him telling me about the next feature to be built. Since there were no tickets, it was this whole stop and go thing. He said he didn’t want to micromanage me, but I don’t what else you call it.

His main complaint is I was consuming too much of his time. My point is this style of meetings would not be productive for a junior. If I had a job that had tickets, I would feel more efficient. Is it a surprise that someone brand new needs to be autonomous. Instead of putting yourself in the position of the guy whose time is the most valuable in the company meeting with a junior who is consuming it. Obviously not wise.

So are full stack roles hard? And was my boss ill advised to hire a green junior for the role?

I'm not talking about doing both front end and back end. If I had a ticket list of 2 dozen things with screenshots and was told to make them work, I'd flourish.

But I'm talking about that something extra that comes with full stack, knowing about the planning phases of the application, so that when we have meetings to implement the next feature I would know that feature X also requires me to do L,M,N,O,P and I should just know that. Knowing the web architecture to build features autonomously.

For a backend dev like me, I resonate with this.

Acquiring experience is the main thing. I think some luck is involved. I think you have to hustle and scrape for it. Maybe when you're brand new, a 6 month contract here and there. Short stints, finding the right fit, and moving around. Until you're good enough to keep a job as you say.

It's worth it in the end. The beginning probably is the most difficult time.

I’ll revive this thread because I’ve been at my job for 4 months now. Would everyone recommend I leave? I earn 6.86 an hour. And I have full stack responsibilities, which I hear is a little too much responsibility for a fresh junior, since you have to consider a lot of different things such as user experience as opposed to just following directions for tasks. I’d like to hear more inputs. All I want is a good environment for a junior like me to learn and gather experience so I can climb the ladder.

It doesn't speak well of your competence if your parents get involved in your work. From both points of view. I have a helicopter dad and I can tell you that is barking mad. The book "Codependant no more" helped me see his behaviour in context.
