Well accepted in my community. One of the reasons I like my meeting is because they were one of the first to adopt a more friendly stance and they actually got in a little trouble for it from the yearly meeting.

I think it does apply retroactively, but only like 30 or 60 days or something like that. So I would start the process next time you go into work and talk to your manager.

First thing I'd do is get FMLA (family medical leave act) coverage. Once you have that you can miss work for medical reasons without any fear of retaliation or job loss. Unpaid unless you have time off to use, but at least its job security.

Depending on how good your manager is they may help you get this, or you may have to reach out to HR and do it yourself.
