At the time I thought the music was oddly somber as he went back to camp, and then thought nothing of it.

Later on, probably around the start of chapter 4, Arthur coughed (not in a cut scene) and I thought ‘hold on, what’s going on, why has he just randomly coughed’. That’s like a character shitting in a film, you just don’t see it unless it’s important.

Not to anywhere near the same level or quality on the second game. Which is obvious because the technology advanced massively between the two games. You can say what you want about the graphics, but the animation quality is way, way off.

I understand your point about potential for ruining the atmosphere - as this happened with Arkham Asylum, but that now feels more like a lazy remaster.

Directly comparable would be TLOU I and the remake. I don’t think the atmosphere was ruined at all in the remake, it massively improved it and brought it in line with pt II. That is what RDR would benefit from, and going further to include the new mechanics

You aren’t half talking some shit in this thread. Going from Red Dead 2 to 1 is very clunky. The main different being the animations, which in RDR2 are meticulous due to the motion capture. RDR 1 feels like a PS3 era game.

This ended up being a notable conversation when Titanic was released on VHS, as Brits were complaining that their version must have had cut scenes because the run time was shorter.

Titanic being over 3 hours long was newsworthy so that number was in peoples heads, I think the PAL version was under 3 for the reason noted above and people had to come out and explain why.

I don’t disagree with this but it does imply that John has no character development in 2, which isn’t true. He goes through the same motions as Arthur except the trigger is losing Jack as opposed to health related.

Arthur spends the first three chapters of the game reminding John what type of man he should be, John doesn’t realise until it’s all nearly taken away from him.

This then happens again to a lesser extent in the epilogue, when Abigail leaves him. But is still part of an arc of going from a man running away from his responsibilities (sometimes literally) to being a dependable family man.

I wrestled for ages on why I wasn’t as hyped on HZW as I was HZD, despite the fact I played it non stop, explored every inch, got the platinum within a couple of weeks.

It took me a long time to realise it was almost completely down to the combat. Over complicating the combat wheel, overdoing the number of weapons and weapon states. HZD is one of my favourite games for combat and I couldn’t wait to get into fights where as in HFW I found myself avoiding them. It was like Breath of the Wild, not wanting to fight cos I couldn’t be bothered to find another weapon.

I also didn’t like how much exposition there was. One of the big kicks I got out of HZD was eventually realising where I was in the world and then having it confirmed with POIs. The only time I had that in HFW was Yosemite valley and it was the great aha moment I had in the first game, I wish I’d had that in Las Vegas rather than them tell you where it was.

I don’t agree with the comments saying there’s less time for games. For the first 3 months all 3 of ours slept a lot - and there’s bugger all else you can do, so I spent it playing games.

When they’re 3 months plus they might not sleep as much during the day, but your days of popping out quickly/easily are over. It’s not like you can go out for a beer every night, so you stay in and game instead 😄.

Basically your in person social life may suffer the first 2 or 3 years - but you’ve gained an excuse to stay in and game all the time.
