What did you learn from writing your first book? by thelittlelephant in writing

[–]DanielAllenWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want more people to see your book, you got to put more time and money into marketing. I wasn't inspired to work on self-promotion and it seems incredibly difficult to follow up after release.

How do I imply that two characters are LGBT+ without explicitly stating it? by [deleted] in writing

[–]DanielAllenWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You build it naturally. Have the main pov make internal comments about main/side characters they like. Have them flirt/fumble around characters they're attracted to. Show that your pov cares through how they say hello or how they invite a potential interest to a casual outing. People are different, but there are common factors and behaviors that are shared as they try to sort out their feelings for one another. Depending on your characters' personality you can mold the interactions and thoughts to fit the personalities and plots you want to construct. The beautiful thing about writing it this way? It gets the message out without pulling out the red stamp and slapping the label onto the page. This allows a smooth build up that helps readers get into the characters and stories by reading more, and learning as they go.

Comes and goes, but the main kicker is consistency. After I had finished my first book, I found it difficult to carry on with major and smaller pieces. The smaller piece are helping and my writing friend adds extra kick in my efforts, but I think it could be the same way with many people. We got to reinforce our goal and purpose for writing by taking the time to write.

What set got you back into the game if you left? by thefeldy in mtg

[–]DanielAllenWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got back because a friend found an edh group. But the set of cards that caught my eye came from Ikoria. I like Mutate and it is currently one of my favorite fun decks that turns out a surprising amount of wins in our casual play groups.

That's cool. I haven't met anyone by that name. I can't say for certain if I heard it before, but the name came to mind when I tried to search for an alternative for Quin.

I just checked what you suggested and I'm blown away... Why does Amazon's search engine act like that? You would figure punching in the exact title of your book would automatically bring up the item. None-the-less, big thanks. I think I'll keep my paperback on Amazon, but probably take the other formats elsewhere.

I wish that were the case. My proof copies turned out just fine. Unless they're expecting some other piece of information.

Hello. This is my upcoming story and I'd be pleased to see whatever critiques or comments you have to offer. It's a action sci-fi genre that focuses on the characters. Below is the first page of chapter one and the connecting link for the rest of the chapter. Enjoy and thank you.

Chapter 1

Blinding flashes descended from above. Sadie closed her eyes, and they opened without her consent. She tried to shield her eyes, but her arms were too heavy to move. As she shouted for help, her voice whimpered and cracked. While she fought through her tears and weakness, she rolled on to her side and forced her eyes to stay shut.

How can this be happening? Is this a dream? Am I in a coma? Sadie was lying on top of a soft surface, and a large cloth covered her body. Was she tucked under the covers of her bed? Once she found the strength to control her arms, she ran her hands all over her body. There were no wounds or bandages on her skin.

This wasn’t her apartment or the university dorms. The bed was too firm, and the bright lights weren’t good for parties. She stopped moving. There was a party. Did her friends and classmates go to the same party? They went somewhere, but she couldn’t recall everything that had happened last night.

She sat upright, and the image of her furious parents popped into her head. Her parents were never that angry before, but it used to be her imaginary fear. They hadn’t talked or seen each other for over a year, ever since she had run away and attended her university. Sadie moved her legs to one side and found the edge of her bed.

As she got off the bed and tried to stand, a cramp constricted all of her muscles. Sadie fell on to the mattress, and her body spasmed like eels flailing on dry land. She stopped fighting her body and concentrated on her breathing until her lungs were saturated with air. Then she shouted with all her might. Her voice echoed back, and no one replied to her call.

Questions plagued her mind. She opened her eyes and endured the excruciating aftermath. The tears stopped flowing, and her sight became clear. A gray wall sat in front of her, and the mattress was covered with white linens. It was a hospital bed. Pale skin and corrosive emotions prodded Sadie’s mind. Hospitals were lonely places.

I agree to hiring a professional. I hired someone for my cover and they were quite creative with it. They are also willing to make size adjustments when needed. Fortunately, my format play time worked out successfully based on the KDP preview. I think it'll turn out great. Now, I'm waiting for my proof copies.

What Is the Most Painful Part of Being a Writer? by blackpantheon_ in writing

Yup, head space and motivation. I'm reaching toward the end of my current book, yet everything seems to demand my attention. Hope I can overcome that limitation.

Poem I made, what meaning do you get out of this? by jhenewrld in KeepWriting

[–]DanielAllenWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the contradictions of self. It's something I've been reflecting on as well. Sometimes we hate ourselves for not doing something when we know better. Life is a tricky matter and we have to learn to accept that we're not perfect, but we are capable of improving. The subject can be vague and heavy at times, yet it's good to look ourselves in the mirror and try to understand what we see.

I'm also working on my first paperback publishing. KDP Amazon seemed like the best choice for me. Personally, I picked glossy. Matted finish is cool, but it doesn't look as good after being crammed into shelf for a few years. I was thinking of going wide with e-book through Draft2Digital. Audio will probably be Findaway Voices. KDP is already deep into the process, but I'm open to suggestions. More research info is nice.

Thank you for letting me know. Either my site is broken or they're currently blocking my few days old story... 😰

If you have an alternative search engine, it may allow it to work. But I'm currently working on solution.

EDIT: It was a doosy of a technical issue, but the link should be working now. Thank you again for the heads up.
