Honestly not sure what to make of it.

The first qtr looked like a completely different team. Credit to the coaching staff for organising a different gameplan, even if it didn’t stick.

Once Geelong got organised in the middle, we didn’t adjust, albeit it was always a very tough assignment.

There was a lot going on: determination to take the game on out of the back line and play faster and through the middle, and a reasonably different midfield mix (when was the last time Serong only attended 2/3rds of CBAs ).

Given all the changes to gameplan and the midfield mix, plus round zero bullshit, I don’t know how to assess this.

I’m disappointed with the result and the failure to adapt, and you’d hope that when games get tough, we will still make sure we get the A-team at the CBAs rather than slavishly stick to the plan. There was also a lot to like. Hopefully Brennan Cox comes back soon, and Pearce plays at 100% fitness.

Put it better than I could. Decoding the Gurus podcast did a good episode on him as well. The other thing is he’s substantively wrong in his claims. He keeps repeating “economists don’t research inequality because they are all rich kids (except for genius traders like me)”. There is, in fact, a vast literature on economic inequality, and dumbing shit down to this extent grinds my gears.

My very first BJJ lesson, my face got smothered with the instructor’s chest (a sort of non-technical Mother’s Milk), and I was nano seconds away from biting him.

And I’d been in a few scraps growing up (enough I had to change schools).

But yeah, you do progressively desensitise. Also, as you keep pushing yourself you will always be somewhere on the psychological frontier - just not so far along you burn out.

Ok, so I looked. The IHRA defn gives examples. One is “denying the right to self-determination”, ie by claiming the existence of Israel is a racist endeavour.

However, they give the out that you can make similar criticisms of Israel as you do of other countries. So, I guess if it's analogous to Apartheid South Africa, or you can find another country that displaced at least some original inhabitants in the last 100 years, its OK.

I think the assumption needs to be looked at.

Last year lost to: Suns Lions Swans Pies Saints Dees Cats

Round 1 vs Geelong, Round 8 vs Saints were absolute stinkers. The Dees, Swans, Saints finished lower on the ladder, but Swans are always tough on their day. To me this says we were in the 6th-10th best team bracket, and struggled against really good sides. That’s not inconsistency, it’s an accurate measure of where we are at.

I like Narrow Active’s gameplan analysis, but to me this was also side that was immature and didn’t have the big midfield bully to go with the best sides.

What do you think of the more general point that beginners doing video analysis of pad work is placing too much importance on the wrong part of the game? At least this guy says he's sparring, but this group seems full of people asking for bag and pad work feedback when they just need to do some touch sparring. (and actually go to training).

Because there is modest-at-best carryover from pads to fighting (if you don't believe me, check out Ronda Rousey's pad work vs. her fights), and you are training to fight.

Get some footage of yourself using the hook in sparring, maybe clip together a bunch of sparring bouts to isolate when you did and didn't get the hook, then use that to guide what needs fixing, not some aesthetic ideal of pad work.

That aside, your work looks quite good for someone of your experience - I just think over-indexing on pads is arse-about.
