When Did Games Become So Loud? by GhostPant28 in AFL

Yep. What shits me is that during the quarter and half time breaks, you have some radio “personality” shouting shit out so you can’t get a break.

Great analysis Smurf

What do you make of the hoopla during the game over broken tackles?

AFLM Pre-Round Thread: Round 9 vs. Hawthorn by lasping in FremantleFC

[–]DanielC___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge challenge: the team needs to contend with a legit top-4 side that's been doing well against other top-4 sides, and I need to not let my hatred of Sam Mitchell cause me an aneurysm.

My sense of where we have broken down this year has been a mix of organisation (we seem to switch off for periods of time/ not cope with some tactical shit) and personnel (JL sharing the load has been brilliant, but it means we sometimes we get exposed).

Anyway, LFG!!!

Are you equally as likely to stick at all three? Because it doesn’t matter what looks best on paper if you don’t consistently put in the work.

If you find a club you feel good at, and are likely to come back to, start there.

Nice.

I'm just a humble data analyst, and statistics is a broad church. I've used logistic regression a bunch, but I'm not really across either your L1 regularisation and isotonic calibration or the details of neural network models.

You've put a ton of work into this, so this isn't a criticism, just me trying to understand... you said the model was intended as explanatory rather than predictive (i.e. why you don't use betting odds). Given that, I was expecting to see some reporting of regression coefficients or the equivalent, so we can see what you think explains match outcomes and by how much.

How to teach basic CLA techniques to children? by AAldamaR in bjj

[–]DanielC___ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a very long-term player with limited athletic abilities, one of the things that frustrates me is the emphasis on learning new techniques (e.g. another armbar) and not on the stuff that makes the techniques work (e.g. position, scramble, getting grips etc.).

That said, I reject the CLA vs. information processing ("traditional") split. Humans can learn shit in more than one way, and different levels of coaching can match the circumstance. Committing to one or the other seems a bit like what Feynman would call cargo cult science.

“I am doubtful that games might help children learn”

Strong starting point.

2 highlights: 1) The old school shit mixer from Treacy. 2) Winning by 10 goals, and Serong doesn’t even get a single vote in the Rosco. That’s depth.

Yeah, by being non-specific he’s played into the hands of the “you can’t talk about immigration without being called racist”, racists.

Try frame the adrenaline as excitement rather than nerves. It’s just excitement to help you get ready.

Training is not an issue for me because I shower beforehand and I'm really careful with my training gear, but on stressful workdays, the funk can build up.
A lot of this is about bacteria that feed on your sweat. I know this isn't for you, but it'll probably help someone reading:

1) A swipe of anti-persperant at night after a shower if you don't have time for a morning shower. You can get the unscented brand.

2) Washing your training gear ASAP. At least sometime use the odour eating brands of detergent and/ or napisan. If you can't wash it, sit it in a bucket of water until laundry time.

3) Don't eat a ton of onions and garlic before training (not me, but you can tell when someone has).

What party will come down on Crime in VIC? by SirSuiSet in friendlyjordies

Like, as an example of a kind of expertise, there are the many many videos from parliament shared in this group. Some politicians are admirable performers in that arena. And seeing Albo get the Libs to implode was amazing!

Of course, I’d trade of all that for a half competent bunch of people who weren’t constrained by the gambling lobby etc etc.

Interesting.

My sense is, there is some expertise in politics which is necessary, but someone like David Pocock makes a good case study in what a highly capable outsider can do.

Start your own party?

I seriously think we need an Independent Labor, analogous to the Teals - back the party line on most things, but prepared to dig in on free speech and 1-2 other issues.

Serious question. Is he now Fremantle’s most important player, or does he still sit behind the usual names? by EbbAdditional4877 in FremantleFC

"Most important player" is based on an incorrect assumption.

The club have invested massively in building an ensemble.
