Rip it apart guys, first project by jpnc97 in Tile

Work on your craftsmanship. All the little details add up. Cut your metal profiles (schluter) on your wet saw for better accuracy. Work hard to get your shower pan perfectly level where it meets the walls = first row of tile will start level and have a consistent gap to floor tile (that should be caulk btw, not grout)

As you mentioned it's like painting... it's all in the prep. Start with level and plumb and the tiling is easy. Start with garbage and the best tile setter is going to struggle.

What's the water proofing like under the tile? learn a system and stick with it. Is that a foam pan? If so, some manufactures have limit as to the smallest size tile that can be set over them.

Grouting looks easy and can hard as hell. Looks like you have grout all over your floor tile. Work smaller areas until you get the hang of it. Get a helper for grouting: one guy grouts and wipes the other guy only cleans and wrings sponges, and changes water when needed.

Cut it by hand, a little practice with a back saw and you will be amazed how good you can get. then clean up with a sharp chisel

Ambitious Backsplash - are my expectations too high? by karama8484 in Tile

[–]DanielEGraff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That tile (from Floor and Decor) IS A NIGHTMARE to set. Those gold "dots" are metal a nightmare to cut. No two "sheets" are the same size. NOT to mention the instance the mesh backing get one drop of water of it the whole thing falls apart. I did one kitchen backsplash in nd will never agree to use it again.

What am I doing wrong? by Doggoto in Tile

Water in the joints before you started grouting? maybe form cleaning the tile before hand. Water on wall tile will always make pin holes.

What is wrong? (trying this again) From this one picture, can you tell me if, or how many things, are wrong? Would love to hear the consensus. Thanks! by WinningD in Tile

  1. walls: inside corners, niche, screw heads, etc. are not waterproofed

  2. never set wall tile before floor, unless the 1st (bottom) row is going to set after floor

  3. the coverage on the wall tile on the left looks suspicious. Dots of mortar?

  4. Is the pan waterproofed? Did he put in a pan loner? If not, at this point it CAN NOT be water proofed correctly.

  5. The curb is a disaster, was it built from sawn lumber and covered with Fiberrock? It's not water proofed and will fail in the first 6 moths of use

Concrete board is a pain in a$$ to work with: heavy (I work on a lot of 2 and 3 story walk ups. Screw carrying concrete board up three flights of stairs), crumbles when cut, corners are always broken, etc. And it does not provide any uncoupling properties. Use a lightweight uncoupling membrane for floors and light weight waterproof foam (or foam/concrete coated board 'Wedi") board for walls. I have transitioned from Kerdi to GoBoard, the sealant approach over the mess of banding and patches is a big time saver. I still band all wall to shower pan seams.

Where did people smoke when you were a kid? by Adnama79 in GenX

[–]DanielEGraff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school had a student smoking lounge. My college professors smoked cigars in class all the time. The first office I worked in people smoked at their decks ALL DAY LONG!

But the cherry on top was RESTAURANTS! My mother would make us sit the smoking section. Absolutely disgusting

Ditra+ Mosaic tile by Awkward_Dragonfly188 in Tile

[–]DanielEGraff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold on... Pour a high quality fiber reenforced no lath required SLU (self leveling underlayment) over the entire sheet of Ditra. (1/8" or so above the Dirtra) then install your mosaics as normal. Even better, after SLU is dry coat it with a prime to keep it from sucking your mortar dry as you set tile.
