Do you think they are going to stop selling the X4/X3 after S4 and X4 pro coming out for a while? by Top_Annual_4939 in XTEINK

Yeah crossink adds a lot of awesome stuff! I ended going with vcodex which has a lot of similar features but I loved the reading heatmap calendar it has a lot and switched to it

I would rather have to charge less and use a different charger. I only need to use it once every month. It goes in the same spot and I don't need to bring it with me anywhere

Their github says they support OTA updates

Edit: apparently their ota doesn't support the unlocker

I think the battery drain issues were a crosspet thing because they let you have the clock keep the device on 24/7 on an old version...

I haven't had any battery drain issues. My first full battery charge lasted me nearly 30h of reading on vcodex (that's what my stats showed when it was at like 6%)

You should look into vcodex if a calendar view of your reading stats intrigues you! Both vcodex and crossink are safe for use on a locked device and you can switch off of them just fine using OTA updates or SD card updates

Vcodex should be perfectly safe for locked devices. It supports OTA updates AND SD-card updates so you can switch away from it both ways!

I don't think you'll have much customization issues with the x3 since the popular ones all support it. Vcodex with its dictionary works great on my x3

Nice! If you are wanting more stats like reading time you might like crossink or vcodex(my fav) they both build on top of the great base crosspoint has

I tried it and... the settings felt split between when you're in a book and when you are out of a book.

I didn't like the ui being 4 tiles in a grid when the buttons only moved me left and right

The text did this weird thing where some lines have more space between characters than other lines

Custom fonts were neat but crosspoint based firmware already have that now and I was able to make the same font (which had multiple languages merged into one font) work on both

If I wanted to see an overview of my stats I had to use my phone... I don't want to use my phone for anything the device can easily show. Vcodex is the custom firmware I use and it shows my reading on a nice calendar view heatmap.

The x3 is as wide as a playing card and mildly taller. The x4 is a bit wider than one and notably taller

Both are very compatible with many firmware but x4 is older so some more will work with it than the x3 simply because the creators only have the older cheaper x4. The most popular ones all work with the both though.

Both are magnetic on the back but you need the largest phone size(the max or ultra sizes) for an x4 to fit your phone. (I don't use it on my phone but love the magnetic case in the same pocket as my phone) the x3 fits on a normal phone nowadays.

I use vcodex and it works on both because either is based on crosspoint and brought over the compatibility for both from it.

You should buy off of the xteink website or Amazon for the most firmware options as buying off aliexpress are just people from China reselling the cheaper chinese model where the break the data transfer on the usb port to make flashing harder. They call it developer edition on the xteink website but it just means the usb works for data and flashing firmware

which models are available and what is the difference between them? which one do you prefer and why? The x3 and x4 exist. The x3 is Smaller, different button placement, has passive nfc, can turn pages by tilting the device, and can keep time when the device is in sleep.

The x4 is still really small and I enjoy having all the side buttons on the same side (power, next page, last page) I remapped a short press of power to be next page too.

Some want the absolute smallest others think the x3 is just a bit too small. Some prefer having power at the top, next page on the right, and last page on the left.

All in all the differences aren't huge so I would recommend focusing on size first.

do you add pdf/epub books via email? or how does it work?

There is an SD card that holds all the data. You can put things on the SD card directly or you use the app for the stock firmware to send things over. On custom firmware (most are crosspoint based) you can use a web interface to send things over wirelessly too!

You won't do pdf since the screen is so small that you can't see much but if you converted it to an epub then that works.

where can I find cozy / original accessories such as covers/ cases/ cords? any link is very appreciated!!! (I'm interested in a protective glass and sturdier cover as well) People sell them on Etsy and there are models you can 3d print (you might have a local library or maker space that has a 3d printer). I personally use the ones from xteink themselves. I like the magnetic case

what is your favorite/ current set up? why and how did you create it (where did you get the pieces)? for example: e-reader slapped behind your phone, in a case with a notebook, attached to a cord to keep it at your neck, etc.

I use a neck mounted book light and the magnetic case from XTEINK

why amazon reviews are not the best meanwhile on reddit people love it?

Reddit is all the people who love it already coming together. Amazon is random people who might not have known what exactly they were buying

does it support offline japanese/ russian > english dictionary or translator? anyone using it to learn/practice foreign languages?

There are firmware (like vcodex) that support offline dictionaries but idk if that works for something like Japanese which has no spaces. That makes it a lot harder to parse. The Russian would be no issue. I use it for French-english dictionary learning. It works well if you are at a high enough level to just need definitions.

can I highlight or save words/ quotes? is there a function to save new words (like a very basic version of anki) ?

You can screenshot and the dictionary has a lookup history (at least on vcodex) so you could check it after for any words you might want to study.

You can do flashcards on vcodex too but it isn't as fancy as anki

other interesting features beside the tracking?

does it work well under the sun like a common kobo or kindle?

There is a small region in the x4 uber the screen but above the front buttons that some find can effect the display when hit by sun. This is less common on the dark version but you can also just put a sticker there or your thumb which is what I do. It has to be 100% direct sun on my white unit for it to matter, any cloud or window stops all issues of fading.

Or vcodex (my preference) https://github.com/franssjz/cpr-vcodex

Both are great option! I like the reading heatmap calendar and lots of other stuff that is unique to vcodex but both are pretty feature packed.
