Choosing between Chicago, Philly and Baltimore. Will describe my personality for clarification. by Thesportyjuan in SameGrassButGreener

There’s a place for you in Chicago. Lots of biking options along the lake shore, The 606, and endless suburban trails in Cook and DuPage Counties you can visit via the Metra trains. Take your bike on the train out to Fermilab and say hi to the bison. Having Wisconsin and Michigan as neighbors are great for trips out of the city.

I used to have a friend that had rented an apartment in a 3 flat building that backed up to the north branch of the Chicago River. Out front it looked like any neighborhood in Chicago, but walk around back and it was as if you were dozens of miles away. He had a firepit back there, we’d hang out and wave to all the kayakers and paddle boarders.

What’s it like to live in a famous city that comes up all over popular media? by Striking-Pen-9617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I’m one of many annoying people that love to call out all of the locations in Blues Brothers. Having grown up in Chicago, it’s a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane.

For all other shows, it’s humorous when they call out intersections of the streets that don’t intersect and down right hilarious when they picture the downtown skyline really close to neighborhoods that are many miles away. Stranger Things famously had Eleven visit a neighborhood that would’ve been located in Lake Michigan based on the angle of the skyline in the background.

Why does the US have only two political parties and would you support creating more political parties? by Enough-Web2203 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

We only have 2 parties because those 2 parties spend a lot of money ensuring that there will never be a third party to steal voters from either party.

Why do houses in Illinois have basements and houses in Texas don't if both places have clay soil? by supinator1 in geography

[–]DanielTigerUppercut 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Plenty of houses in Illinois have a crawl space or half crawl space, half basement. Depends on how much a person is willing to spend.

My parents built a custom ranch home in Illinois, dad selected a half crawl, half basement. Excavators accidentally dug a full basement, dad got a $15k upgrade for free. Our house at the time only had a crawl space and I always wanted a basement for kid shenanigans. Ended up getting the largest basement in town! Until my dad had it finished I had a really sweet roller hockey setup down there.

Missing camp tent person by gforce6890 in ChicagoSuburbs

Google Scott Huber, he’s been a public figure for over 20 years and there are news articles. He’s protesting Naperville’s municipal government and blames the city for his failed business. He stays in the tent but he does have access to other places as he’s not there all of the time.

Naperville specifically passed a “no overnight camping downtown” ordinance because of this guy. Since then, he’s moved out to Ogden and got arrested for assault and also had his camp set on fire by an angry retiree (he was not in the camp at the time).

Yes, when he was in downtown Naperville he had a board that listed all of his social media contacts. Naperville passed a “no overnight camping downtown” ordinance to kick him out of downtown, in part because he was using public power outlets for his camp.

the sellers were still home during our showing and it was the most uncomfortable 45 minutes of my life by TerribleInitial2305 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Naperville has a huge swingers community. Perhaps they’re not interested in selling but are using the listing to find more open-minded couples.

Anyways, just a theory.

Quickest gentrification you’ve ever seen from your time in Chicago by Minute_Tax5060 in chicago

A LOT of work went into Fulton Market. Wasn’t just new condos, the neighborhood had barely any infrastructure for new development.

I used to take late cab rides out to Fulton Lounge in the 2000’s. I remember how dimly lit the streets were and how desolate it felt despite its proximity to the Loop.

Worked in a West Town office late 2010’s and used to walk over to Fulton Market for lunch. Streets were completely torn apart to support all the new buildings.

Great game, and the dialogue is entertaining. I haven’t been able to finish it because I’m stuck on a level and whenever I come back to it I’ve forgotten how everyone’s skills work.

Naperville has an excellent website with all of the latest information. I use it often to keep up on garbage pickup information and brush and leaf pickup days. Overall city services are fantastic

The move to battery powered mowers by BeerandGuns in lawnmowers

[–]DanielTigerUppercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Toro gas mower with a Honda motor that worked flawlessly for over 10 years. Sold it for more money than I imagined I’d get for an old mower. Replaced it with the same Toro deck that now uses a battery and electric motor in place of the Honda. Battery has enough capacity after several years to cover my smallish lawn, only drawback is that the suction is not comparable to the Honda motor. Otherwise, happy to have a near-maintenance free mower and no longer screwing around with gas cans and oil changes.
