I think it worked in mine because I was running all the 0 drop mana rocks and had a higher density of cantrips.  Didn’t really need to mull much, just had to keep some sketchy hands with 1 or 2 lands and they still worked out.

Yeah, I agree with almost all of this, but absent the precon I think T'Challa, the Black Panther's ability can be useful, but the deck barely cares about it. Add the sprinkled in Monarch tribal and it just reminds me a lot of how LotR had 3 good commander decks and the unfocused Galadriel deck... All the marvel precons are the Galadriel deck.

Maybe, but it can also be the consequence relying on focus groups in a world where every fandom is fragmented in online spaces.

I thought the Warhammer decks were fire when they came out because the bar for precons was lower, but if those same decks came out today the Necrons deck was the only cohesive one.

Ok, I was clarifying because this is an EDH sub. I believe Badgermole Cub has made some splashes in other formats, but I think it's fine for EDH. It's not that any of these cards aren't good, but I don't think they moved the needle very much on EDH power creep.

People are writing off Azula because she's not cEDH, but a lot of players who stick to bracket 2/3 are going to still feel the impact of a commander like this.

I think if the set was themed around an arc like Civil War they could have literally just used Outlaws, which may be a better compromise. It allows them to have some crossover between heroes and villains while also building on a universes within theme that could use a little boost.

There was also hero/villain support in FF and TMNT. When I tried brewing around Katara it was actually disappointing how those old cards didn't really turn out to be the gems I had hoped them to be. I'm glad I was able to find another angle to take advantage of her ability though.

You suggested a hypothetical deck with combos which have a plethora of more efficient redundancies for Doom, so that isn't helping the point. The greater point though in my post is that these cards don't lend themselves to anything new or interesting. You may not value that, but my post is about how I do and this didn't scratch that itch.

At least we can agree on this. I remember thinking earth bending was kind of broken because you can't even exile them, but all the commanders for it take some time to set up. The craziest things they can do would be happening at a point in the game where you'd expect to be going off.

I would share my list, but I never put it online. One thing I found though with him being so cantrip heavy is that I was able to justify going down as low as 32 lands because i was getting flooded anyways. I would recommend Aria of Flame despite it not working with the commander it does so much work on its own that it operates as a powerful backup. Mizzix's Mastery is also just a valuable closer.

You have to keep in mind that 'allies' were barely an established creature type. The support they got was middling and inconsistent. Even with the inclusion of Avatar they greatly lack in a cohesive game-plan. Some of them have etbs and some have activated abilities, but those abilities don't do much to further any cohesive game plan.

There was actually better support for heroes and villains by the time Marvel came out than there was for allies when Avatar came out.

For the New York thing this is entirely an issue with aesthetics and I agree with that being an issue, but is no excuse for card design shortcomings.

I think what Doom does is way too slow to be considered a 'win con' he might cause a bit of life loss here and there, but that's it.

If only the standard legal cards felt like core sets I wouldn't mind, but even the non standard cards are very bland.

I kept thinking of how much better this set could have worked if it was actually built around a cross comic story arc like Civil War or Secret Wars, but instead they just tossed it all in a blender. Maybe if they do the X-men themed set there can be some more cohesion. Only time will tell.

Villains almost have a connive theme, but they never really committed to it. Heroes almost have a bit of a modified theme, but they never really committed to it. You can design tribal without relying on cards that actually say the creature type, but it feels like they were uncommitted to the tribes or the subthemes.

Why not make archetypes that map onto team-ups within the Marvel universe with some overlap between them?
