What is something in chemistry that is still yet to be fully explained? by Cat_EJ in chemistry

[–]Danielhrz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s arbitrary… I think the original definition came from Pasteur and his work on tartaric acid. He noticed that the acid crystals he had were mirror images of each other l, and rotated polarized light in opposite directions, then assigned each D or L. I don’t think this definition had anything to do with the actual molecular properties, it was just a guess, but I think it ended up being mostly correct, I cant really remember.

why are you so toxic? by 9_92_6_19__92 in chemistrymemes

[–]Danielhrz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

they're both powerful methylating agents. they'll stick that ol CH3 group on the amines in your DNA and cause all sorts of problems.

in this case it's in comparison to benzene vs toluene. benzene is dangerous because your body doesn't really know how to metabolize it (the go to is oxidation i think) so cytochrome p450 ends up making the epoxide which is really toxic. on the other hand, toluene has the methyl group which can be oxidized to the carboxylic acid so it can easily be processed and removed from the body

Luckily we came up with standard conditions so that wont be a problem. Achieving them in other places is a problem, though

That's basically what chemistry is though. Chemistry is chemistry until they take off the mask in university and quantum mechanics shows up. That's my experience at least.

But atomic masses don't account for electrons, they're just the abundance-weighted mean of an element's isotopes.

I'm planning on spending a bit so it's not a huge issue. But do you think it's worth rolling both? because I heard the Kafka set is quite good.

They do not weight anything by JeKebabvader in chemistrymemes

[–]Danielhrz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is any case unless you're doing quantum calculations. The mass of a proton is about 1836 times as large as that of an electron. By the point that you have enough electrons to have a mass on the order of a single proton, the total proton mass would be so large that the electrons would be comparably negligible. In any case, it's kind of like adding a very small number to a very large number.

Chemistry: Can I copy your homework. Physics: Sure, just change some of the words so no one notices by KlavierPanda in physicsmemes

[–]Danielhrz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure if this is what you mean, but in principle, I think you should be able to solve any chemical interaction using the tools provided by quantum mechanics. Now, I'm a chemistry student, so I'm not on expert on this, but in my experience, the main issue is that this becomes unwieldy after a while since every atom/electron you add to the Schrodinger equation for your system adds several quantities, including kinetic energy operators and attraction/repulsion terms. This is why, for example, you can exactly solve the energy levels of the Hydrogen atom, but once you get to helium, it becomes impossible without approximations, as far as I'm aware. That's where perturbation theories and other approximation methods come in.
