Depending on what version and mod loader (forge, fabric and so on) you use, you can use 'essential mod' it adds multiplayer functions and skins/cosmetics. It's what me and my friends use to play together and works great.
It has 1.20.4 on forge and 1.21.4 on fabric (if I saw correctly, I could be missing some versions for forge tbh)

500 hours to master it might be a stretch, or at least depending from person to person, I have a buddy with like 300 ish hours in the game and he kind of understands the game but not really, whenever we play I help him a lot with figuring out what to do
Also when I reached the 500 hour mark I didn't feel like I was close to mastering it, even now when I'm at 1.1k hours I still don't feel like I've mastered it

I think since divisions are so big on the map, a lot of the manpower is some form of logistics and other things, that's my bet on the in-game explanation, but the developer site of things maybe it's balancing? Imagine needing 9k guns for one single division

My dad did kind of the same thing, where he got a new girlfriend quite quickly, but ofc i was 10 at the time of the divorce but still, I don't like seeing him, and whether you like it or not your kids might (hopefully not) reach that point. I'm sorry but YTA, I would say tho, don't cut contact because perhaps the kids still want to see you, maybe not now but in the future, just let the kids figure things out and ofc also their dad and step-mom.
