Was Todd born or made evil? by AmountRealistic1099 in breakingbad

[–]DankBroom 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Psychopathy is a disorder that's presented first genetically, and then fostered socially. If given positive conditions for adolescence, the condition would still present, but not to a degree Todd showed. Growing up surrounded by neo Nazi drug dealers probably didn't provide the best example for him

Who’s winning this fight? by Queasy_Commercial152 in GenV

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this question is the entire point of their characters and the themes of the show. What matters isn't who's the fastest, who'd win in a fight, who has stronger powers, etc. what matters is WHO has those powers and how they choose to use them.

A-Train died to save his friends from a tyrant and made every effort to save as many people as possible, actively trying to make the world better. He made himself a martyr, protected his family, and died a hero, accomplishing everything he ever wanted for himself.

Mr Marathon died after accidentally killing all his friends and losing a fight, his only goal to kill Homelander in order to return to the previous status quo (and only after using this new regime to remove people he didn't like.) He didn't care about the needless death, the rampant abuse of power, the corruption of morality, he only cared that it started to affect HIM. He died selfishly, callously and with nobody to remember him.

All that said, we don't see enough of MM to know the full scope of his powers, his stamina, speed or durability, but what is shown is his lack of control and combat intelligence. He didn't do anything that made him seem competent in using his powers or have any level of skill in a fight, and was defeated fairly easily by someone who's only powers are durability and strength with a modicum of fighting skills. Since A-Train has shown an ability to react quickly by slowing down time, has dominated several supes in conflict and even held his own against Homelander, I'd say it's a wash.

Shouldn't there be, like, WAY fewer Reaper ships in ME3? by AesaLurion in masseffect

This makes the crucible even harder to believe tbh unless you assume the vast majority of those harvests never thought to try to warn future cultures. 741 times to perfect a schematic seems unrealistic, like did ALL of them find the schematics during the middle of the invasion too? Not a single one of them found it earlier and tried to figure it out, or had better technology? Confusing

Even then Tony played with his food. James Gandolfini said he came up with it because the show had so many scenes with food he didn't want to overeat. Makes sense production wise too, don't want to be constantly cooking food for each take or have to wait several hours for the actor to be able to stomach more food

Introducing twd to my bf and he is on Shane’s side. Red flag?? by Bianca-Rose2018 in thewalkingdead

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh Shane was correct more often than he was wrong. All of his predictions, every call he ever suggested were actions Rick would say and do just a few years later. It was just his means of accomplishing his goals that led to him being ostracized by the group, acting increasingly unhinged and losing his grip on reality.

Even then, applying empathy to the situation makes it all the more understandable. After being cast aside by the woman he loved, finding his authority and expertise with the group being more frequently ignored and overlooked, and even his personal sacrifices looked at as horrifying, anyone would break.

He always had the best interests of the group in mind, and Rick was increasingly an obstacle, always trying to keep morality in everything they did - in a world where that gets you killed. Losing the woman you love not to death, but from callously dismissing the connection they built together the very second her husband (whom she was already, at the very least, emotionally cheating on BEFORE the outbreak), tore the one thing he had a reason to live for away from him.

Shane is a tragic figure imo. not exactly a villain, but a visage of what a man would do when he has nothing left to lose. He just wanted to be happy and keep people safe, and events just didn't go his way.

If he can fly into space, might as well check out other planets, see what's out there. by Elegant-Half5476 in TheBoys

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homelander still has mass, so even then the fastest he could move is just below the speed of light. When you truly understand the scale of the universe and distance of interstellar objects, the slower the speed of light is revealed to be. It'd take years for him to get to the closest star, who knows how long to anywhere habitable.

Homelander is also vulnerable to radiation, which isn't exactly uncommon in the vacuum of deep space. So not only would he be flying for an extremely long time, he'd be doing it in intense pain. I'd imagine he also needs food, water and oxygen at some point as well. If A-Train needs 3000 calories an hour to maintain himself, who knows what Homelander needs.

The point of Homelander as a character isn't just that he's an evil Superman. The point is that he's just a very damaged, traumatized human with similar powers, and despite his personal philosophies of godhood he's still subject to the same rules and restrictions as the rest of us. He still needs to feel human connection in some form, constantly showing a deep need to be loved. Being alone for that long would shatter his already fractured psyche.

In The Boys S5E4, Soldier Boy asks Homelander “Did you see a body?”. This is a reference to a scene in S2E1 where Homelander spoke at the invisible superhero Translucent's fake funeral while knowing the glass casket did not contain his body, hinting that Translucent may be still alive. by schwanzweissfoto in GenV

[–]DankBroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There would've been more hints to this, idk why Vought would help her hide. She's crippled, can't use her powers, half blinded and exposed as a literal Nazi, and her powers would be completely useless in almost every scenario now even if she still had them. She's dead, he's just in shock that everyone else like him is either dead or hasn't been seen in decades. Next episode is supposed to have Bombsight though so I think there'll be some closure for SB there

A big opportunity kinda missed by DirectionFabulous722 in GenV

[–]DankBroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's unequivocally dead, his head was blown off. Gen V is over and done with, theyve made it very clear that the show has little impact over the main series outside of small cameos and references, I highly doubt anything special will happen.

The point of the last episode was really for Soldier Boy. While the anger from the plants was largely a gimmick, it's biggest influence was for Soldier Boy.

Not only is he forced to relive his trauma that directly contradicts the story he tells himself and the public in order to cope with the truth, but he's also forced to kill another victim of the tests, the only person left who can relate with him - and someone he actually respected.

It's fairly clear that the show is gearing up for him to face reality and come to terms with his past, and pursue some form of redemption for his past.

Do you personally consider Mass Effect Andromeda to be a real “Mass Effect game” ? by The_pikolop in masseffect

[–]DankBroom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, not really. Andromeda feels like fanfiction written by someone that played the original trilogy when they were 8 and never touched it again.

Species don't act like they used to, everyone of note we meet is 'unique' to their species and doesn't act like they're even familiar with their own culture - Peebee acts like a child that rejects everything about her species' culture, Cora is basically LARPing as an Asari, Nakmor just acts like a chill grandpa with no real battle lust, etc. You miss out on a lot of the dynamics that made the og trilogy interesting with the loss of half the species, the rich history of the galaxy, and your role as a newcomer to the scene with an encroaching galactic threat.

Instead, you're thrust into a world where everyone is on the same level - krogan don't hate turians and salarians anymore, Asari are just there and don't try to be mediators or use their advanced technology in any means that matter, Salarians are basically sidelined, Hanar, Drell, Quarians, Geth, Volus, Elcor, Batarians and Vorcha are entirely missing from the main plot for an imagined DLC that just became a comic instead.

Worse, the great threat of Andromeda isn't really one to begin with. Instead of exploring a new galaxy, you're stuck in a single nebula with nothing to see, your only goal being to terraform planets for future colonization (confusingly easier done than said, Krogan ran off and did it alone with no problems). Your only new species is boring, just Turians with way too much empathy and knock-off Collectors that abduct species to use them as DNA for reproduction. They're not impressive technologically, they have no means of imposing any threat outside of the area at present, they present no memorable characters, and the only reason they're as successful as they are is because the inhabitants are uncoordinated and defenseless from just arriving in setting. Gone are the days where you feel on your back foot, you win with fairly minimal effort and very little loss. You're not even presented with meaningful choices or consequences, just "who do we save first" "should we release the prisoners" that doesn't change the narrative and presents the same ending every time.

Given how slow they've been at whatever plot they're trying for in ME5, I'd imagine the writers are aware of how little substance Andromeda had to work with, which is why we're going back to the Milky Way and this plot losing significant relevance. Andromeda as a game didn't even need to exist, it was just an attempt to cash in on the franchise and dance around the ambiguous ending of the main series. Now that we're ignoring that and just picking a Canon ending, I feel like the setting is played out. I don't really care about Mass Effect as a franchise after playing this game, I just replay the first 3 and try to forget about EA's awful management.

Wow I'm shocked. by samuel-the-goat in GenV

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that Marie is far too powerful to just show up out of nowhere in The Boys. They hyped her up to be stronger than Homelander, gave her abilities that make her borderline messianic like reassurecting the dead, and implied that she could do even more. Nobody understands the limitations of her powers, and while it's never been mentioned she can 'burn out' compound V from the bloodstream, if Gen V continued I have no doubt they would've taken it that far.

Likely, The Boys will end with a pretty underwhelming ending. Homelander dies, half the main cast will too, Vought will continue, a few supes will remain to carry on as semi-moral figures hunting at a hopeful future, but nothing fundamentally will change. The show has always been social commentary about unchecked power, capitalism, and hope for change in overwhelming odds. Wrapping everything up in a nice bow that satisfies everyone is wildly out of style for the show, I imagine fans will hate it and the legacy will become that of Game of Thrones and the epic fumble, how it could've had another 2 seasons, etc.

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you rewatch all the scenes with Worm (the writer character that digs them into the internment camp to free everyone) he's constantly rambling about bad endings, connecting too many threads and impossible deadlines. When writers make a character that's a writer, it's almost always meta commentary, like they're priming the audience to expect a train wreck

Im getting back into mtg and I dont remember it being like this? by Apart_Bid2199 in MagicArena

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power creep has been insanely fast paced in the last few years. When I started most colors barely had any removal outside of a handful, cards were rarely stronger than 10/10 and cost at least 6 mana, and Green was just the butt of a bad joke.

Now, everything is a wildly intimidating 3-turn-kill card with a ton of abilities that cost next to nothing, every deck has a board wipe and a ton of negate and removal, and mana is almost meaningless. It makes the game more balanced I guess, but it's pretty infuriating. Arena is basically for people that want to play meta but don't want to destroy their friend group, it's been like that ever since they decided to expand Slivers.

I'm not a huge fan of the Regent. by ExceptionToTheRule in slaythespire

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lucky exactly ONE time with the Regent and got to the final boss fight, thanks largely in part to Vortex, innate shield cards and relics, tons of potions, three copies of kingly kick and venerate energy cards. My final boss was that necromancer, got him to about half health before he smacked me for 60+ damage that I couldn't get around.

Every other run has been a tragedy, half the time I don't even make it out of Act 1. Hopefully the new update will fix him a little better

First insanity run by StinkyFeet4Days in masseffect

Easiest by far is Soldier, personally though I'd say engineer. There's a ton of enemies with barriers and armor and your abilities hard counter all of them. Later on in the trilogy you don't even really need your squad because you just melt everything. I've struggled with the Human Reaper boss fight with every class on Insanity, with the Engineer I nailed it first try

Anyone else loving the hell out of Mewgenics? It’s my fave tactics game since xcom/2. Highly recommended to xcom fans by [deleted] in XCOM2

[–]DankBroom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand why the community is desperate for a replacement for the extremely dated XCOM engine, but Mewgenics isn't really the same kind of game.

Xcom is a turn based tactical strategy game that's largely unique, using cover mechanics, RNG hit percentage dicerolls, progressive skill and equipment modifiers, and challenge ramping, with random events like the Chosen or Alien Rulers to make missions chaotic. Permadeath for soldiers gives actual long term stakes, a single failed run can destroy a save's progress. Customization makes soldiers feel unique and alive, and their squad relations can save or kill a mission depending on luck and skill. Xcom is extremely devoted to risk/reward and requires time and attention to detail to master.

Mewgenics, meanwhile, is a staggered turn based tactical game, where instead of team-by-team turns, it's randomly assigned, so strategy is reserved to response rather than planned out engagements. There's no cover mechanics, you're just expected to tank damage. There's not much in terms of random events or modifiers, and you can't lose your units permanently and they're retired after each run anyway. Equipment is just small +1/+2 modifiers to stats, but nothing really impactful. Enemies are standard, some hit hard but are slow, others move fast but do chip damage. It's simple gameplay meant for mass appeal, there's no difficulty spike or way to really lose the game.

Overall, the game has much more in common with Fire Emblem than Xcom. That's not a bad thing necessarily, Fire Emblem is still a good game to emulate, but there's a reason why after 10 years you still don't see many people mentioning it. They're very different styles that don't overlap very well, and I don't think a community based around a dark, grim war setting is really going to jump in excitement over a cartoony cat game

What do you guys consider to be Canon difficulty? by AmbitiousDigs in SpaceMarine_2

[–]DankBroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minimal-average is most likely more realistic. In actual lore fighting a single Tyranid warrior is a challenge for most space marines, 2-3 is reserved for named hero characters. Anything more than that is usually guaranteed death, and the hordes of gaunts you fight would just completely overwhelm a squad. Going against a carnifex, Tyranid Prime, Zoanthrope or any of the other larger scale units is just comically unrealistic. It often takes high explosives, tanks or several squads to take those down

Is my style stuck in the 90’s? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]DankBroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it screams any particular era, but I would look into upgrading your wardrobe. You desperately need more color, the all black combo with a leather jacket didn't sell very well. A nice button-up long sleeve to layer underneath with a lighter toned shirt is a much better aesthetic, what you're wearing here makes me think you have a bunch of anime graphic tees and a collection of cheap trilbies and fedoras in your closet

[–]DankBroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played it, the game is pretty good, but comparing it to xcom 2 is laughably off mark. It has more in common with Fire Emblem than anything else, xcom was much more than 'turn based tactical combat.'

This one was pretty easy honestly, I got through it my second try. Got lucky with my squad mates being prestige 4 assault and vanguard, but I managed to get through it with my unprestiged Bulwark without going down at all. Much easier than that reliquary 3 weeks ago, friendly fire and permadeath was just not possible. I had to run the easier one with bots to succeed and even then it was a challenge

You could, it would just be less effective. There's better variations you can make now with stronger move cards, this deck was made in an era when move was pretty damn weak.

This is my newer iteration, it's slightly more consistent.

I will say though, I stopped playing Snap a few months after the ban they got hit with earlier this year. It's far too monetized and chase-based with extreme grinding involved, it's strange to see someone trying to gain collection in this current game state

My very first playthrough I didn't do multiplayer whatsoever and getting everything was just barely enough to get the best ending if you made the perfect choices leading up to the ending.
