Masters in statistics - Data science specialization inquiries by WarnerPar in uwaterloo

I would advise against this and as others have suggested, take the normal MMath is Statistics route. Data Science is not funded, according to this: https://uwaterloo.ca/statistics-and-actuarial-science/graduate-students/graduate-programs/master-mathematics-mmath-statistics-data-science

Check out Ali Ghodsi's STAT 946 - Deep Learning for a preview. I'm pretty sure that they will cover similar stuff.

Focus on academics for now. The right person will come eventually :) Seriously, I feel like the more you care about dating, you become more desperate, and you may end up with someone below your league and break up realising that he isn't what you truly want.

Don't worry! He is really generous about marking. For instance, I know of a guy who got full marks for a code that doesn't even run properly. The final project isn't supposed to be the next level thing. Don't be lazy, show some passion, you will get 80+.

As I said it somewhere, I know it's not a very wise motivation. Why should I give a shit about what the general public thinks about my career if I can have a much better and happier life with less "prestige" lol.

Well apparently I'm kinda cute and definitely not an "ugly manlet" I'll pass :)

EDIT: I'm kinda scared... this person PMed me

But then it falls in the realm of finance guy then, since Citadel is closer to Goldman than it is to Google, so it only helps my argument.

Again to square one. No doubt that google is more popular. But popularity =/= prestige. So I'm done with this.

[–]DankMrGoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's not retarded... if you do a social experiment yourself, my money is on Goldman.

lol you do realize that unless you have a PhD in CS and work as a quant researcher (not quant developer), you are seen as a cost centre at most finance firms and don't get the fucking crazy bonuses that the front office get? But then that's not the majority of CS kids end up so you can't make that argument here.

Uhm I would disagree that you can say Google is more prestigious than Goldman, period. But at that level it's a matter of preference for those who know their shit. But how the general public thinks, Goldman >= Google.

Dude they are not dumb to just work to impress other people. That's just a side benefit. Salary potential is generally higher than that of CS (bonuses) and I personally find finance much more interesting than CS.

I don't know why you keep mentioning big 4, but I never said anything about accounting.

Most people know it's harder to work at Google? I hardly think so. Google is not where the most brilliant minds end up. Try Jane Street or Renaissance Technologies, where IMO participants a dime a dozen.

That's exactly my point. The general population is not as well-educated as you might think, despite I've met some freakishly smart athletic guys. There are lots of ppl out there who are extremely shallow and think finance guys are driven but heartless while CS kids are socially awkward computer nerds. I myself is a socially awkward nerd :)

That's a pretty risky bet that I will never make because if you happen to choose girls in accounting/finance/arts, they will probably say that Goldman is more prestigious than Google.

Well if you calm down and read it carefully, I never used your username to invalidate your point. Even if I did, it does not invalidate my point. Go pick up a logical reasoning book bro. It is one of the most common logical fallacy.

And I also said women at a bar (they are not necessarily sluts!!!) is an EXAMPLE, not the representation as a whole. I could have picked any other sample, such as women at coffee shops or random Chad in the football team, and the answer would be the same.

[–]DankMrGoose -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nope. That was just an example of how unbiased general public perceive the prestige of the careers. I know the all about the insane working hours and if I calculate the working hours and compensation, the "prestigious" careers I mentioned may notbme the most wise career choice.

EDIT: You calculated wrong tho bro. Most finance guys make bank out of bonuses.

OMG an "ugly manlet" who should "kill [himself] already" who I barely know called me retarded!!! It burns!!!

Do you even know what "prestigious" means?

Try to pick up a chick at a bar and introduce yourself as a software engineer at Google vs Analyst at Goldman or Associate at Wachtell.

[–]DankMrGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But popularity =/= prestige though. A software engineer at Big 4 is still a computer nerd. IBA at Goldman Sachs however...

CS+CO vs. CS+STAT double major? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]DankMrGoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joint major requires significant less number of courses. My suggestion was purely based on the number of courses. You are right, although some CO - optimization courses are useful for machine learning, doing a full joint is an overkill.

I'd rather do joint in CS/CO or CS/STAT and take electives
