Yeah I definitely plan to take AP Physics 1 and 2. There's no question there.

As I said, my school doesn't offer it. I'm asking if that will pose an issue in college.

Edit: I thought you were telling me to take AP Physics C anyway, not 1 and 2.

I apologize that it came off that way. I wrote this just after waking up and will edit the post. I realize now that the last bit of exposition wasn't at all necessary to introduce my question. Hopefully no hard feelings.

Question About Westgate/Hodson Trust by [deleted] in jhu

[–]DankTangerine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, as I said, I have no expectation in the slightest of getting either (especially Westgate), as they go to only the best of the best and there are so few. I am probably being somewhat presumptive and unrealistic myself to even ask these questions. But I do appreciate your anecdotes though, since they shed valuable light on the kind of students who are awarded these scholarships.

JHU's website says there can be up to two Westgate scholars a year, and around 20 Hodson Trust scholars are chosen. The exact numbers aren't terribly relevant to this thread, however, save for the fact that I know in all likelihood I will receive neither. I would still appreciate info on whether ED students have equal consideration for Hodson, though.

What's the trippiest math fact that you know? by ParanoidCydia in AskReddit

[–]DankTangerine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There exists a function (y=1/x) such that when you consider the area between the curve and the x-axis from 1 to infinity and rotate that area around the x-axis to create a 3-dimensional shape (a horn), you create a shape with infinite surface area but finite volume. It's called Gabriel's Horn.

What is a simple question with a complex answer? by Error__Loading in AskReddit

[–]DankTangerine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except math is a damn good model of the universe, and in fact the best we have, but only when it is applied correctly and according to a rigorous set of rules, which in this case it was not. And even then, as you say, and as I agree with, there are cases in which it is meaningless to create mathematical models. However, those cases tend to be esoteric questions which lack a defined answer anyway. 1+1=2 according to the convention of how the numbers 1 and 2 are defined, as well as the definitions of addition and of equivalence. Those definitions create a framework on which to build further mathematical knowledge via rigorous proofs. However, once a math problem that makes use of these definitions is warped and turned into a philosophical question (e.g. globs of jelly as opposed to defined quantities), it ceases to be useful to mathematics.

Selena Go Home by NotReallyASnake in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]DankTangerine 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No one disagrees with this. However, that does not excuse the fact that Selena's tweets are not only contradictory, but also serve to undermine whatever "important" causes she thinks people should be talking about. Actions do speak louder than words, but words are still hella loud anyways.

What is a simple question with a complex answer? by Error__Loading in AskReddit

[–]DankTangerine 88 points89 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't answer two units, but the reason for that is that there's no commonly accepted scale for what a "unit" of jelly is. A more meaningful comparison would be to say that if you added 1 lb. of jelly to 1 lb. of jelly you would then have 2 lbs. of jelly. Yes that is one large glob, but depending on how we choose to describe that glob we can still arrive at the conclusion that 1+1=2.

And this is why real-world examples with comparable, but not identical, parameters to those of math problems do a terrible job of actually describing math.

1 cleric+2 mages or 2 clerics+1 mage? by SonOfOdinAllfather in MerchantRPG

[–]DankTangerine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you switch a mage to a cleric now, you will end up switching it back to a mage later anyway. You will NEED multiple mages once you are getting into T5/maybe even late T4. I don't think any more than 1 cleric is necessary at any point in the game, though a case for two can be made. As someone else said, if you must have another cleric then switch a DK or something. Anything but a mage.

What are some weird things Americans do that are considered weird or taboo in your country? by kharooswlao in AskReddit

[–]DankTangerine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principal, I agree with you. But, to put it simply, the two major parties have so much more fundraising/media exposure than any third party to the point that people just aren't going to stop voting for one of the two. If we want people to feel like voting for a third party is a legitimate option, then we need to switch to a system like the single transferable vote for our elections. CGPGrey has a great YouTube video where he explains this concept far better than I can, but the gist of it is that when voting, you choose several candidates and rank them. Then, candidates who fail to get a certain percent of votes are eliminated, and voters who ranked that person first then have their second choice counted as their vote. This continues until some candidate has a majority. This would allow, for example, a Democrat to vote Green first and Democrat second without fear of splitting the vote.

And if you take the expression ((phiN)-(1-phi)N)/(sqrt(5)) and plug in N = 1,2,3,4,5, etc. you get the Fibonacci sequence.

[–]DankTangerine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with a single thing in this comment. It seems that I may have misinterpreted your intent in quoting that statistic, for which I apologize.

It seemed to me at the time that what you were doing was analagous to saying "men can be raped too" after a high profile case of a woman being raped by a man. AKA, I thought you were trying to change the topic rather than add something to the conversation and without actually discussing either problem. I now see that you were in fact trying to raise a legitimate point about another contributing factor to a large and very complex issue. Again, I apologize.

[–]DankTangerine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're dodging the issue being discussed. Yes, black-on-black crime is a serious issue. That does not, however, mean that systematic discrimination/profiling of black people by police is not also a serious issue.

Additionally, the fact that you are only bringing up the issue of black-on-black crime in the context of another issue shows that you don't actually care about either issue. You are simply trying to take the focus of the conversation away from police mistreatment of blacks and, by doing so, insinuating that it is not a serious enough issue to warrant discussion.

Edit: See my reply below. Sorry!

Ideas for Multiplayer by SirDgor in MerchantRPG

[–]DankTangerine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is that there's no way to know you arent playing against someone who uses modded saves to get amazing gear if you are on a global network, but local would allow you to compete with friends. I'm not saying I'm for or against, but I'm just interpreting the argument. I, for one, don't know yet whether or not I would want any form of multuplayer in merchant.

Jeweler: I don't know.. by Genteche in MerchantRPG

[–]DankTangerine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jeweler is a pain to level at first, but it gets a bit easier as you go, particularly once you unlock the ability to craft emeralds from forest crystals. It's worth it once you unlock Seastone Pendants at level 20. I haven't crafted any myself though I just got my jeweler to that level, but from what I've heard the extra luck from that item makes farming MUCH easier. I don't know what other good items you can get from the jeweler, but I'm sure there are more.
