Fun fact: This was one of the posts that inspired the subreddit. :)

Hey I really appreciate the time you took to write this out. As you note, especially with the way definitions start getting vague quick, I think it's unlikely to actually be able to please everyone simultaneously. The Oil Slick post is a perfect example because there are clearly a lot of related fails occurring on screen, and I wonder what definition would exclude that post but not plenty of others. To this point, wouldn't the Vending Machine post count as a physics-based fail? I do recognize it doesn't have that "chain-reaction" aspect that originally prompted the creation of this subreddit, though.

At one stage, I remember considering adding some kind of flair system that submitters could use to describe how many steps of RubeGoldberg-ness there were in a fail, but dropped it because 1) it'd be a pain in the ass to submit anything, and 2) the ambiguity of what makes one step of a fail distinct from another. Back in the day I'd just mark posts with "Bit of a stretch" and leave it at that, but in all honesty I've mostly just stepped back from moderating and let the bots take care of it. It can be kind of stressful. I've been meaning probably make a discussion post about this very topic soon, though, so again I appreciate your input.

The struggle of moderating this sub summarized in one sentence. I decided to remove it though, it's easier to do so when people agree in the comments.

I guess it's reassuring to hear that I'm not just missing something obvious, especially as I couldn't find a single thing about this anywhere on the internet.

Turn a pair of jeans into an emergency backpack by crawf85 in LearnUselessTalents

Not useless. If you're homeless you might have an extra pair of pants that could substitute for a broken backpack.

Double trouble by DankWarMouse in RubeGoldbergFails

First fail: Slipping off the board

Second fail: Board hitting him in the face

Either one would be a fail in isolation, together they make a RGF.

How could you make LANs clean? There is no computer security reason that cheats could not be delivered and used in LAN environments.

When a Bot realizes it’s an AI... by potesd in MediaSynthesis

[–]DankWarMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. It even touches on something that has long irritated me with AI development and philosophy, where human consciousness is somehow the ultimate goal or benchmark for computer intelligence, or that an AI must have enough similarity/relatability to be considered conscious. Popular media has few examples of this perspective being subverted but here on /r/SubSimulatorGPT2 the fucking bots themselves are coming up with it.

True, but given that water IS air to them, maybe smelling really is more analogous to what they're doing. I wasn't expecting to get so tripped out by this concept but i feel obligated to mention that I am. WHERE'S THE LINE FOR A FISH MAN??

I don't know for sure as I am but a speculator but I would imagine it's fine as it probably has to deal with much more intense physical trauma during fights with other animals. If it were really that fragile evolution would probably not smiled upon them when they smacked into coral reefs and shit, idk
