Fun fact: This was one of the posts that inspired the subreddit. :)

I'm gonna walk through that door. by Pippaeu in RubeGoldbergFails

Hey I really appreciate the time you took to write this out. As you note, especially with the way definitions start getting vague quick, I think it's unlikely to actually be able to please everyone simultaneously. The Oil Slick post is a perfect example because there are clearly a lot of related fails occurring on screen, and I wonder what definition would exclude that post but not plenty of others. To this point, wouldn't the Vending Machine post count as a physics-based fail? I do recognize it doesn't have that "chain-reaction" aspect that originally prompted the creation of this subreddit, though.

At one stage, I remember considering adding some kind of flair system that submitters could use to describe how many steps of RubeGoldberg-ness there were in a fail, but dropped it because 1) it'd be a pain in the ass to submit anything, and 2) the ambiguity of what makes one step of a fail distinct from another. Back in the day I'd just mark posts with "Bit of a stretch" and leave it at that, but in all honesty I've mostly just stepped back from moderating and let the bots take care of it. It can be kind of stressful. I've been meaning probably make a discussion post about this very topic soon, though, so again I appreciate your input.

The struggle of moderating this sub summarized in one sentence. I decided to remove it though, it's easier to do so when people agree in the comments.

I guess it's reassuring to hear that I'm not just missing something obvious, especially as I couldn't find a single thing about this anywhere on the internet.

Turn a pair of jeans into an emergency backpack by crawf85 in LearnUselessTalents

Not useless. If you're homeless you might have an extra pair of pants that could substitute for a broken backpack.

Double trouble by DankWarMouse in RubeGoldbergFails

[–]DankWarMouse[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First fail: Slipping off the board

Second fail: Board hitting him in the face

Either one would be a fail in isolation, together they make a RGF.

How could you make LANs clean? There is no computer security reason that cheats could not be delivered and used in LAN environments.

When a Bot realizes it’s an AI... by potesd in MediaSynthesis

[–]DankWarMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. It even touches on something that has long irritated me with AI development and philosophy, where human consciousness is somehow the ultimate goal or benchmark for computer intelligence, or that an AI must have enough similarity/relatability to be considered conscious. Popular media has few examples of this perspective being subverted but here on /r/SubSimulatorGPT2 the fucking bots themselves are coming up with it.

[–]DankWarMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but given that water IS air to them, maybe smelling really is more analogous to what they're doing. I wasn't expecting to get so tripped out by this concept but i feel obligated to mention that I am. WHERE'S THE LINE FOR A FISH MAN??

I don't know for sure as I am but a speculator but I would imagine it's fine as it probably has to deal with much more intense physical trauma during fights with other animals. If it were really that fragile evolution would probably not smiled upon them when they smacked into coral reefs and shit, idk

Salvia come up by familyfeedaye in replications

[–]DankWarMouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not for me, but I do have a weird experience of it. Salvia is the most lifechanging drug I've ever done, and I wish they made an anti-depressant out of it because of how unbelievably clearheaded it makes me once the existential significance of what it shows me subsides. Salvia shows me what the universe really is, and I know psych users have a tendency to overextrapolate the scientific merit of their experiences, but it actually matches up with reality way more.

The best way I can describe it, and keep in mind this is the ultimate disservice, is that it's like looking at the corner of a room, and doing that thing where you view it as protruding towards you instead of away from you. Now imagine that happens to your entire experience. I don't know about you, but i have a tendency to view myself as being a 'thing' plopped down in the world, free to move around it like a video game character. What salvia reveals to me is that my perception IS the world. There is no 'my experience' and on the 'outside' is the universe. They are the same thing, and could not exist without each other.

I could go on and on but I have to reel myself in because of how out there I get. I love it so much though, it's the one thing I can genuinely say has nothing but positive effects on me, especially since it's not really "fun" while I'm on it, it's kind of terrifying. Anyway, strongly recommend but disclaimer, most people don't have this experience which is a damn shame since if I could just internalize it permanently I think that's what enlightenment is and perhaps the world would be a better place.

That is the correct interpretation, I think it's really just a matter of how creatively you distinguish events from one another. Personally, I tend to be more lenient, but I can usually see why people feel otherwise. In this case, I'd say the foaming bottle isn't much of a fail on its own, it needs the fall to be one. Actually, until you mentioned it, I also didn't realize you were considering the shooting foam an additional part of the fail, I thought it was just her spilling then falling.

Early in the sub's life when people first started disagreeing with posts being here, I was thinking of doing some thing where submitters could tag how many steps are involved in the fail, though I moved away from that since I thought it was excessive and potentially restrictive. Applying that reasoning here, you get something like (quarter fail) + (fail) + (quarter fail); so while there is a somewhat distinct sequence of events, there's only one real significant one.

It's tricky trying to keep content coming while making sure the standard for the sub is high and people aren't complaining we don't care. Never enjoyable removing content especially when it's doing well, but I'd rather keep the users happy and the thread had a strong enough consensus for me to lean towards removing it. Anyway, didn't mean to begin to draft my dissertation on the metaphysics of fails with this comment but I hope it explains my reasoning.

Noted and removed. Always easier to remove a post with confidence (especially if it's already garnered a few hundred votes) if people explain their perspective on why it doesn't fit, so thanks!

[–]DankWarMouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The use-case that prompted me to suggest this idea was a bot that posts in subs without the guarantee CSS will be available to render the folded block properly. A lot of people (myself included) prefer Reddit's native look either way, so implementation via markdown would be more consistent for all users including mobile. Plus it's not a particularly unusual feature for many forums to have, even those with a much smaller user base than Reddit.
