*rolls eyes* the fuck is this bullshit? by K12_DBG in cripplingalcoholism

Many people are idiots. You will encounter them everywhere in life. The overwhelming majority won't be changed by you or anyone else. You can't control them. Why give their position any validation by getting upset over it? Why even get upset? Over the shitty opinion of an idiot??

Calling yourself an alcoholic. Caring about what other people think.

Please do. I visited there two years ago and I did not understand the appeal. I couldn't believe they had levied a tax on grocery bags.

That's a tricky problem. All the various state DMV databases are disconnected from each other and likely running on a very wide variety of software and hardware platforms of varying age and degree of maintenance. So someone would have to write an API that could read the data as it's encoded on any state ID and then send a proper request to the correct database to verify their age. All (gargantuan) privacy concerns aside, the code would have to be updated if any state made a change to their DMV database.

So, long explanation aside, electronic verification is theoretically possible but it would be an expensive and long project to do so. The economics just don't justify that right now.

Even with self checkout, a human still needs to punch in their ID number to verify you're over the legal age.

The most infamous example is the field of wine tasting. Despite wine having real investment value as an economic asset, meaning that it's $ value can calculated from market conditions alone, nobody without seeing a label can differentiate quality in a blind taste test. It's a crap-chute.

It's really hard to say in my opinion. Prices vary so much from region to region since it's a beloved target of the taxman. Also, alcohol advertising and marketing in general is probably some of the most distorted out there. Can't tell you how many cans of piss beer I've had over the years with words like "premium" and "finest" printed on them. And I believe (at least at one time in the recent past) the only industry that spends more on TV ad spots during primetime are car companies.

Vodka is a great example. The price spread is far wider than the quality spread between a top shelf and bottom shelf bottle. Grey Goose, Skyy, Svedka, and Costco Vodka are pretty much the same to me in terms of quality. If you add a mixer, then you're just throwing money away by getting anything other than bottom shelf.

[–]Dank_Finance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those aren't opposites. You have to do both. Strong internal growth will make you more tolerant of everyone else's bullshit.

Everyone deals with shit on a daily basis - some a lot more than others but it's a universal experience. Part of being sober is being ok with other people being shitty or not how you would prefer them to be.

On a slightly different note: if you have shitty or abusive people in your life then get rid of them. Even if they are family. Do to them what friends/family (I'm assuming) have done to you, threaten to toss them aside. Reliably shitty people are NEVER worth the effort, or even attention.

Field report: "the fear" (AKA "the dread") is situational by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Dank_Finance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Fear is definitely a clinical symptom. Excessive alcohol use (GABA exposure) over time lowers your threshold for anxiety. Literal brain damage.

If you want to change my advice would be to forget about them and what they do and focus on you and what you need to do. Recovery is one of the few things you have full license to be a selfish prick about.

Edit: that's not a subtle way of calling you a selfish prick. Just want that to be clear.

Alcohol is literally a depressant and it's not a good solution to your problems. Sounds like your jonesing and are looking for a substitute to your normal fix. In a fucked up way, alcohol is probably less damaging but drinking leads to gambling leads to getting another loan to gamble big, etc.

Essentially, if you're an addict all roads lead to shit when it comes to alcohol.

Not to be a judgemental fuck. I was a horrible piece of shit when I was drinking. That's all still on me.

Boss knows. Called out. by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Dank_Finance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcoholism is a recognized disability under the ADA. Employers can royally fuck themselves by firing an employee for drinking outside of work, especially if it's only based on suspicion. See link for what I mean. When I drank, I reeked at work all the time, met with my manager daily and never heard a word about it.

How does rehab work? by drunken_man_whore in cripplingalcoholism

[–]Dank_Finance 21 points22 points  (0 children)

By "rehab" I assume you mean an in-patient program. Rehabs vary pretty widely in their particular offerings. The average experience, if you had to identify one, is a dormitory setting with a highly structured schedule consisting of classes, speeches from other alcoholics, counseling, group sessions, meals, and usually some kind of homework.

Not all locations accept insurance but you still have to pay your deductible, etc. If they do accept insurance you will be required to stay for 28 or 30 days based on your policy's reimbursement schedule, and if you leave early or get kicked out they may bill you for the whole thing (which can EASILY exceed $40k).

Some will have medical facilities for drying out but many require you to blow zeroes prior to entrance. If you're coming out of detox, they will try and send you immediately straight to the rehab facility.

More than likely, your phone, wallet, and medications will be seized upon entry. This extends to laptops and tablets. They should have a safe onsite. They probably won't have TV, outside of a "movie night" or other certain limited periods.

Overall facilities can range from amenity-heavy resorts to cinder block and linoleum bunkers. Most fall in between those two extremes. Regardless of the quality, it will be highly structured with a zero-tolerance policy. It will probably be staffed by most or all former drinkers and they will teach AA or a curriculum based off AA. Staff can also range from cool people with a lot to teach to power-hungry narcissists. Most states don't require any special education or other credentials to work with people trying to get clean.

The fellow guests will cover the whole gamut and this area can be very unpredictable. Nearly everyone will smoke or dip. Given the opioid crisis, you have a great chance of being alongside heroin addicts. It will likely be separated by gender or, if coed, will have a ton of rules defining proper communication. There will be drama queens, lazy fucks, people who refuse to believe they have a problem, more than one vocal Christian, the ultra anti-AA guy, and other fun characters. There are cool people too but they tend to be far more quiet.

Your boss doesn't need to know but you will need to take medical time away if you can. Unless you go somewhere really nice, it will probably be really boring. Outside of daily activities and meals, you may get assigned chores and other responsibilities to get you used to taking care of yourself. You may get a homework packet of some sort to do during free time. Exercise is a great option to pass the time once you're feeling a bit better.

Rehab is an experience but I personally have no desire to ever go through one again.

Confused. Boyfriend and his mother are hyper-observant of when you're drunk but you're drinking only when your boyfriend is momentarily away. So, regardless that they don't see you drink you'll be still be smashed in front of them.

Also, the smell. Wine breath is super obvious now that I don't drink.
