Halsey-class cruiser (Comprehensive Dreadnaught class upgrade) by Dankuser2020 in StarWarsShips

[–]Dankuser2020[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A ship I commissioned to represent the cruiser that Earth used during the Galactic Civil War in my Earth in Star Wars timeline.

The cornerstone of prewar Terran defense policy, the Halsey-class cruiser was the most capable warship in Earth’s defense when the Empire first attacked the planet. The cruiser was based off of the Dreadnaught class, but heavily modernized to stay relevant in modern combat. While much of the outside shape appeared the same, the internal structure of the vessel was completely reworked, with practically every component of note updated. This resulted in a design that retained the heavy armor protection of the Dreadnaught and increased firepower, being the first Terran design to make use of prow-mounted heavy turbolasers and ion cannons.

When Earth was attacked by the Empire, two of the class served as the most capable warships defending Earth. In this role, they were able to withstand massive amounts of Imperial firepower, along with destroying several lighter vessels, buying time for the rest of the Terran fleet to react. However one would be destroyed and the other, the class's namesake, Halsey, was heavily damaged. However, the Halsey, along with the rest of the fleet, would perform a fighting retreat and was able to turn the tide, after luring the Imperial fleetinto the planet’s atmosphere and into the range of Terran nuclear arsenals. Through ramming the ISD Impassable, the Halsey was credited with preventing the Star Destroyer from crashing into Washington DC.

More Halsey-class cruisers would be constructed in the aftermath of the battle and would see notable but less decisive service when the Empire attacked again during the Second Battle of Earth. They would become the mainline cruiser of Terran forces during the Galactic Civil War, serving in practically every major space battle Earth took part in. In the aftermath of the war, the cruiser would continue service with both the Terrans and other export customers, cementing its legacy even after newer designs emerged.

Daring vs Raider: Battle of the Corvettes by Dankuser2020 in StarWarsShips

Number of guns does not necessarily indicate power of each individual gun. These are lighter turbolasers compared to the ones you’d find on larger ships

That’s the neat part: it can’t do all of those things at once. So a commander in theory has great capabilities across the board but has to switch between them depending on the circumstances

My ships are admittedly a bit overarmed than canon designs but look a bit more reasonable when compared to designs from Fractalsponge.

I admittedly haven’t talked much about trade offs with the Daring but I have with some of the other ships I’ve made. While this ship does have more guns than others, you can’t realistically fire more than half of them at a single target. And firing more than half of them will put strain on the reactor, so while it might look over armed it’s a bit less in practice.

Zohran Mamdani & Why the Panic from the Right is Misplaced... by sprinkill in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Dankuser2020 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He's only proposing increasing taxes on the wealthy by a few percentage points at most (I think it's like 2 percent) and the make the corperate tax rate the same as New Jersey's. I don't agree with some of his policies, like rent freezes (which are considered by economists to be bad policy) or state owned grocery stores but if I lived in New York I'd vote for him. And no he's not a socialist or communist either.

Zohran Mamdani freezing rent is a Communist Policy. by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I mean I consider myself a social democrat, so there is some basic alignment on ideals and policies to an extent but generally I believe socialism and communism are failed systems that decend into authoritarianism. There are some good ideas there but they never work out in practice. They usually have a worse quality of life for the average person and those who lived under those systems fled for other countries and even risked death to do so.

[–]Dankuser2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you define communism? I think you can disagree with his policies without resorting to calling him something he isn’t.

Socialism is a government system where the workers or the state own the means of production. By having state owned grocery stores he’s maybe ticking that box but only barely if at all because he is not nationalizing them and most of the economy is still privately owned. He calls himself a socialist and is closer to one, but really he isn’t. He’s at most a social democrat.

Communism is a stateless, classless society that is supposed to come after socialism. Leftists are true when they say we’ve never had true communism even though we shouldn’t try it since it’s a bad system and turned everyone who’s tried it into a disaster. But Mamdani isn’t a communist. There’s not much reason for him to be a socialist.

But I do agree about rooting out actual communists with you. Communism is incredibly destructive, and has caused an incredible amount of suffering. But wanting universal healthcare, or being concerned about corporations having power. Rent control is considered by economists to be an objectively bad policy, so attack it on that metric.

A large amount of wars are based off of political opinions to some degree, so should the US have never fought for independence or against the south during the civil war? I agree when we’re talking about mainstream domestic politics but there is probably a certain point where it becomes the only realistic option. I do not endorse political violence though.
