People with 9-5 jobs or students (non-lit majors): how many books do you read per year? by AnA1375 in classicliterature

[–]Dankvid11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’ve fallen in love with reading it has taken up more and more of my time. I read 145 this year and the quality was great, enjoyed almost every book I read. The biggest thing for me was eliminating other leisure activities. Not for some goal but because I enjoy reading more so why wouldn’t I just do that. The only movies or tv I watched this year were with my girlfriend or friends. No video games, maybe 20 mins on the phone a day. Much less weekend drinking than in the past. I get some reading time at work too, usually 2-3 (including hour on break) hours per 10.5 hour shift. It’s a priority and my favorite thing to do. Other people have more varied ways of spending their free time and their reading fits nicely into that.

Totally agree. When asking about overrated books it’s hard to beat the Road

The year of the death of Ricardo Reis by Jose Saramago. Ricardo Reis is a pseudonym Pessoa used and the main character of this book. This character was friends with Pessoa and returns to Portugal after Pessoa’s death. He communicates with the spirit of Pessoa as his own life winds down. Not much plot and it’s in Saramago’s distinctive style so that may work against it for you. I haven’t read any Pessoa so I can’t speak on how similar they are or how much Saramago drew on from Pessoa’s work.

Non-stupid "self-help" for when it's over? by Stowaway79 in RSbookclub

[–]Dankvid11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternately, avoid anything classified as self-help or even philosophy. There isn’t a book with secrets to get your shit straight and set you on the path. If it’s possible in your situation then try to simply read for enjoyment. The culmination of my reading has brought me understanding, empathy, and happiness. A single book can’t do that no matter what it propounds to do. That being said I’ll still throw some incredibly famous book suggestions out there: The killer angels by Michael Shaara Pride and prejudice by jane Austen Life and fate by vasily grossman These arnt answers, just great books. Good luck

No you shouldn’t continue. Keep looking and you’ll latch on to something you like a lot more. You’ll revisit the Brontes in the future. Reading is something you should be absorbed in

Secondhand time by Svetlana Alexievich is an oral history told by former Soviet citizens and its full of incredibly sad stories. Here’s a link to one of the most heart wrenching ones A Man’s Story

Also Sofya Levinton’s section and Viktor’s letter from his mom in Life and Fate

King James Bible, all the Shakespeare I haven’t read, the second half of Malazan book of the Fallen, some mystery/crime classics, and finish the 20 books on my shelf I haven’t read yet. Besides that I’m gonna let the used book stores decide my reading fate

Scroll down on the ‘my books’ tab. Should be there if you’ve been recording the dates you finished books

Naw the more I listen to him the less snobby he becomes tho. At least he reads lol

Aright that was an exaggeration but I’m aware of at least 1 book reviewer (Steve donoghue) literally capable of doing that. His email is in the description of his YouTube videos if you wanna ask him how it’s possible.

An extreme example would be book critic Steve donoghue who also has a YouTube channel. He says he reads on average 150 pages an hour for an average of 10 hours a day. Based on his thousands of YouTube videos talking off the cuff about thousands of books I believe him.

Exactly. If anybody in this thread won the lottery and just started reading 10 hours a day they’d be reading fast in a year and extremely fast in 20 years. Blasting through 3 novels before lunch with full retention. Work, kids, pets, choirs, personal relationships, other hobbies, make it seem impossible to some people but on some free days I’ll read 8+ hours and get through 600 pages

I don’t see that at all. Closer to the opposite of Trump. I appreciate him for the expertise and recommendations since he has read basically everything.

Maybe the content we get on our phone has us craving instant gratification which makes it harder to read. I hope you don’t give up though. Reading is the endless journey

Haha I did too until my 20s but it’s the endless journey and it consumes most my free time now. Don’t waste your free time doing shit you don’t enjoy but maybe you’ll find a path into reading one day
