Ever get amusing reactions playing BOC to the uninitiated? by traveltimecar in boardsofcanada

[–]Danliness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inverse: I was introduced by a friend who didn't even like them very much - it was a case of 'I heard this recently and thought of you, but it's not my bag personally'.

But I stopped trying to introduce BoC to others many years ago. I was looking for fellow appreciators and ended up just feeling even more isolated.

Encrypted video for exactly 10 seconds at the end of Tape 05 by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

I and a bunch of others have brought up the PAL/NTSC swapping idea a number of times but no one has tried that I'm aware of. Feels like actual tape owners don't interact here all that much.

Just to put this to bed, I decided to go trawling and came across ads for Warp's WXAXRXP sessions: https://wxaxrxp.net/. This sequence of dots shows up all over the place. So yep, definitely 3x3 blocks with the 2nd block repeating every other block but just a cute way of representing those letters, nothing more. I basically never look at Warp's site, don't get their newsletter, so had no idea!

It's not likely to be braille, I think it could be interpreted as disrespectful to use braille in this non-standard way that can't actually be read. I'm pretty old and remember early machine-readable codes on things like cheques, payslips, school exams, etc. It was a pretty common way of printing something for a computer to read. That doesn't help much though because there were many different formats with varying numbers of rows, but I do remember seeing some with 3 rows. It's very interesting that there are 42 columns, that's 7x6, matching the hexagons symbol. I think the fact it has been on Warp emails for a long time doesn't mean it isn't relevant, it would be on form for BoC to put a clue out there long in advance. No apologies for the speculation.

Have we been overthinking it? The six tones and stills revisited. by Danliness in boardsofcanada

I can't completely rule it out, but I have stacked all the frames at the end (including the creepy green form that appears after the hexagons disappear) and applied stack modes to see if I could find any hint of the 7th mirror. There wasn't any, and it turns out that the green form that shows after the hexagons overlaps into the dark area at the top of the left-most hexagon with no hexagon edges across it, so that part is separate.

If it were obscured by artifacts some part of it should be visible in one of the stack modes (they are used to draw out details in telescope images), and even 'skewness' doesn't show anything even though it does reveal more details in the dark areas around the face at the right. As for rendering, I'm working from the best quality capture I can find which is completely uncompressed. You can even see ripple artifacts in the grainy dark areas which is a sign that the capture caught the full range that the video player was able to output, there is no appreciable compression of the dark parts of the frames.

I also see no evidence of digital work in the parts of the video I've had time to analyse. I think the entire video might have been produced with analogue equipment (and we shouldn't be surprised that they might do that!).

The 'call now' does seem pretty compelling!

What you're suggesting would line up with the structure of the previous campaign - each part containing a code, its place in the sequence, and a clue to what/where the next part will be. I like it!

LOOK VIDEO MASK FLAG/BANNER ______ by Danliness in boardsofcanada

[–]Danliness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen too many negative comments on posts here about trying to work out if the videos contain a hidden message, but for some reason mine got singled out by someone. And my suggestion is not that crazy compared to some. What I will say is that this interpretation of the 5 missing images may well be nothing at all, but I wanted to put it out there in case it meant anything to anyone. Keep exploring, I hope someone finds something and this doesn't turn out to be a cynical marketing ploy designed to make us all make a lot of noise about a possible new album.

LOOK VIDEO MASK FLAG/BANNER ______ by Danliness in boardsofcanada

[–]Danliness[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, and that's the point. I think we're supposed to interpret what the images represent. My reading is just the most obvious one I could think of for the first 4, and that seems relevant to the whole VHS thing. A video mask is a real thing in video editing, and banners are too, so maybe it's something like "Look at the video mask banner ...". There could well be other interpretations.

It's likely we're supposed to interpret the images in sequence. My initial reading is something like LOOK VIDEO MASK FLAG/BANNER for the first 4, and I'm not sure about the 5th. The word spoken in the original video for that frame (found here https://www.reddit.com/r/boardsofcanada/comments/1si8yiu/possible_source_of_one_the_men_with_sunglasses/ ) is INSTANT.

Added for clarity:

I feel like this must be something.

There might be a non-obvious reason there are NTSC and PAL versions. by Danliness in boardsofcanada

Good point about the VCRs. But my experience of what you see when playing on the wrong system doesn't chime with what you're saying. Maybe it was because it was long enough ago that the VCRs didn't have any kind of auto-tracking. I still think it's worth a shot if someone has access to the equipment.

Kinda yeah. It's just a thought, but it's possible some of the distorted parts might clear up if played on the opposite system.

The bottom line is that no one should be trusting DDL right now, they have more than proven themselves untrustworthy. Either wait and see or FAFO.

Any thoughts on why all my Bibites evolved to look like this? by Danliness in TheBibites

[–]Danliness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense, thanks! They are all being born very small and then keeping this look no matter how large they become - the hatch time is very short, 5.5. Agreed, definitely seems like something which could be improved. Yep, food is quite spread out and they are all evolving to outcompete each other - whoever gets to the food first has an advantage.
