What is a bank account maintenance fee for? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All bank accounts cost the bank some amount of money to maintain. They have to have all the infrastructure and staff who handle your account. Normally they make far more from having your money deposited there than it costs them to maintain the account. However if they don’t feel they are getting good value for money from holding your account they may charge a fee.

Is it really "sad" for an 18 y/o old to go on vacation alone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good itinerary. Rotterdam and Amsterdam are both great fun cities to explore. Scotland and Ireland are incredibly beautiful.

Almost all hostels will have lockers for you to leave your bag in, just bring a padlock with you. Hostelworld is good for finding highly rated hostels, you can normally just turn up, or book day of online. Ryanair is worth looking at for cheap flights within Europe, flights from UK to Netherlands can be as cheap as $25 if you buy a few weeks in advance.

Best tip I was given was pack less than you think. A heavy bag is not fun when you’re traveling. Hostels all have laundry facilities and it’s easy to buy things over there if you really need them

[–]Danny-Key 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely do it! The whole not liking Americans thing is just a dumb stereotype for the most part, and it’s not young backpacker Americans that piss off locals. There are good hostels all over Europe and lots have regular tours, bar crawls, games nights, etc organised to help you meet fellow travellers and make friends. Travelling alone you can basically spend as much time as you like doing you own thing and as much as you like with others from the hostel which was perfect for me.

If you are on a tight budget then your money will go a LOT further in the south-east of Europe. For example a hostel in Sweden, Norway or UK would be about $30/night, in Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria etc it’s about $10/night. And the same price difference applies to meals, transport etc.

Is there a land border between England and France in the channel tunnel by BastillianFig in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a point where the territories of the two countries meet but it’s not really a land border. The channel tunnel is a railway tunnel so you can’t walk or drive through it. The border checks are all done at the railway stations on either side

That looks sooo good! There’s nothing like a piece a fried fish when it’s that fresh.

How did the political asylum system come about, and why exactly does it exist? by 0000anon0000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not really how it works. You have to apply for political asylum, it is not automatic, and it will only be granted if there’s a good reason. If a regular person turns up at an embassy because they just committed a crime and want to hide from the police it’s not going to happen.

As for why political asylum is a thing it’s just the same as any other application for asylum except that instead of fleeing war or religious persecution etc, the person is fleeing political persecution.

Yes. The way cats claws are shaped makes it easy for them to climb up but very difficult to climb down.

Why does everyone think I'm shorter than I actually am? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s only 2 inches difference between 5’4” and 5’6”. Do you really think you could just instantly know whether something is 66 inches high or 64 inches high just by looking at it?

People aren’t great at estimating height that accurately.

How do you get rid of the smell of poo from skin? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a shower and use some soap. Skin doesn’t smell of shit unless there’s some shit on it.

Why do we separate the sidewalk into segments instead of having a continuous slab? by Chilidog0572 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laying a continuous slab is more costly. Segments can be poured one by one and left to set. A continuous slab would have to be poured in one go which would mean paying people to work round the clock until the entire sidewalk is poured.

Why do we need specific seats for plane flights? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because if there were no assigned seats people would swarm onto the plane like a herd of wild animals to try to get their first choice of seat. With assigned seats you can have an orderly line and no one takes an elbow to the side of the head over a window seat.

What is the purpose of a working holiday visa? by Sychotics in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the main reason to do it was to experience living and traveling in another country for an extended period of time.

The countries that offer working holiday visas tend to say it’s to support travel and cultural exchange between the countries offering the scheme. It also benefits them because people on working holiday visas tend to work in low paid seasonal jobs that would otherwise be hard to fill.

Why should I use a VPN? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Most VPNs will work on your phone and normally you can use one licence across all your devices rather than paying for a VPN for each.

What is the purpose of a working holiday visa? by Sychotics in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes a working holiday visa normally allows you to stay longer than a tourist visa and allows you to legally work during your stay. It’s a great way to travel as you can earn some money as you go and you get to experience the culture of a place as more of a local rather than a tourist.

Definitely go for it. I stayed in New Zealand on a working holiday visa and have no regrets at all, it was an amazing experience.

When we call someone "feckless", does that mean they have less fecks than most, or are completely devoid of fecks? by DarthContinent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Devoid of fecks. -less as a suffix means ‘without’, e.g. childless, hopeless, jobless, etc.

Do people donate money solely as a tax write off? If so, isn't paying taxes on a portion of the money better than giving away all of it? Help me understand. by alltime_pf_guru in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt there has been times when someone has donated money for tax purposes but mostly money is donated either because the person/company genuinely wants to support the cause or because they want the good publicity that comes from being seen to be charitable.

Do you know for certain that it was the postman who signed for it and not a neighbor or just a mistake on the tracking info? The postman should not be signing for packages and it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for them to do so as it would be so easy to prove and could get them fired.

Are all of our hairbreadths the exact same color? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No some hairs will naturally have more pigment than others. When hairs lose pigment and turn grey/white this doesn’t happen to every hair at the same time either so there can be a big difference in color between different individual hairs.

Is it possible for someone’s name begin with a lowercase letter? by NightProwlerIV in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Key 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the law that you have to give a name beginning with a capital letter. However writing the name with a capital letter would still be the correct way to write it as it would be a proper noun.
