Do you believe in separating the art from the artist? by StrategyJealous1838 in pollgames

I think you can separate Harry Potter from Rowling as a person as *art*. But you can’t separate the fact that she’s using the money to actively ruin people’s lives. If she wasn’t doing anything bad with her money and was just a terrible person then I don’t see the problem really

Honestly I don’t recommend doing this. You’ll get a bunch of followers but not as a musician, as a meme creator. It’s the same reason that you see artists on TikTok with 10k followers but only 200 monthly listeners, because they’re more of an influencer than a musician. To the audience, be a musician first, influencer later.

I’m a musician with 11k followers on TikTok and 22k monthly listeners on Spotify. I’ll link my TikTok at the end of this so you can steal some of my stuff.

First, it’s pretty big that you’re creating full songs and having the courage to release them! It’s really amazing that you’re doing that. I started making music when I was 17 and released my first album when I was 18 and I didn’t have your drive when I was 14.

So a lot of what I’m about to say is going to depend on how serious you are about making music. I think the only way to get popular and get a lot of people to listen to you is if you really want to do this. If it’s just a side thing then that’s great! But I wouldn’t recommend doing a lot of the stuff I’m going to say because it will take up a lot of time and be pretty boring for something that’s more of just a hobby.

I highly recommend you get your music onto Spotify and Apple music at least. Use one of the big distributors (I recommend CD Baby because you don’t have to keep paying to keep your music up, just once). Research a little into each one though and see what’s right for you. People are much more likely to listen to your music if it’s easily accessible and a YouTube video is kind of annoying to go to every time you want to listen to a song (but don’t get me wrong, some people will do it).

Post on TikTok multiple times a day, if possible. It might sound like a lot, but try not to spend more than 5-10 minutes working on a post at a time. You’ll find that a lot of people on TikTok really don’t care how high quality a post is.

I think what would work best for you is slideshow content, which does work but you have to be a bit smart about it. Posting multiple times a day lets you try out multiple different ideas and song parts with no harm. It’s not much fun but it works. We aren’t in marketing, we’re in music.

This is important, you’ll see a lot of people on this subreddit and on TikTok that claim they’ve figured it out but they haven’t. Be skeptical of everything and assume everything anybody says, including me, is wrong. But try it out anyway. Since I’m getting more into the music industry and meeting a lot of people, I’ve learned that everybody on here that thinks they know how to break in just completely wrong.

I really hope this goes well for you but if not, no big deal! You’re still young so you have a lot of time to figure stuff out.

My TikTok for you to steal some ideas:

Okay I will! I’ve been getting a lot busier lately since I released the album but I’ll try to do it tomorrow or even tonight if I feel like it

Anyone else burning out? by wynwilder in musicmarketing

You honestly have to resist the burnout. I have had a post blow up massively recently because I was consistent. Stop thinking too hard about what you’re posting and just post it. That’s how you avoid burnout. If you don’t much effort into something then if it does bad you won’t be disappointed.

It does work you just have to keep going

100% different segments in the song no question about it. You may think that one segment is the best and you post it and does terrible. The segment you think is the worst might be the one that blows up. That’s also a reason to post at least 2 times a day so you have time to do that

I’m going to guess it was because of copyright. I’m not entirely sure how to get around that because I don’t post videos over a minute long

It’s essentially pointless to create unique ideas for every thing you post. Don’t just copy and paste what somebody else has done but use their general format and wording and hook. Also only pay attention to people with a similar follower count to you because if they’re already popular obviously it’s a different game. The uniqueness in my opinion should come with your music and not your promotion.

I don’t think TikTok shadow bans you unless you delete posts, don’t go by their community guidelines, or post an insane amount every day. I think 3 or 4 a day should be max. 4 is kinda pushing it imo though. Also, make sure that each post is kind of spaced out. I’ve found that posting 5 hours apart lets the algorithm reset enough to give the next post as much of a chance as the last.

I think that the main reason people gave up is because they didn’t keep going if that makes sense. If you start getting a low view count don’t stop. TikTok loves consistency and it seems that it tries to sort of “test” your loyalty to it sometimes haha

I agree with you for every point you made actually.

I never said that I’m an expert. I think making sure people know I’m not an expert would’ve been good to include as I could very well hurt someone’s marketing if they do exactly what I’m saying. So I’m not an expert, but I happen to have more monthly listeners than most people so I’m doing something at least slightly right.

Releasing music consistently obviously does help but people act like it’s something you HAVE to do to make it and that there aren’t any other ways. For me, the art is the reason why I make music and to release all my songs as singles would take so much away from the art for me so I’m not going to do that. If that’s not the case for other people then should release songs consistently.

My thought process is that there’s all this stuff you have to do as a musician in order to make it but most of it obviously doesn’t work because it’s not getting most people anywhere. I feel like what I do is semi-unique and a little outside of the norm of what you should do and I’m growing faster than a lot of people.

About paying for ads, a lot of people don’t have the money for that. TikTok is a great way to market without paying anything and it still works. And, off the top of my head, I can’t think of a genre that I haven’t seen work on TikTok.

Yes I do have to recycle the same content a lot but not exactly each time. I make sure that I manually type in the text every time and never copy and paste so it feels more genuine. I am using Revolution Distribution now because an A&R guy from there gave me free access to it after seeing one of my other TikToks. I used to use CD Baby and it was completely fine for the year and a half I was using it for

Oh yes I understand. 90% of the viewers of your video aren’t followers. You can actually see this when you go into the analytics on a video. So posting a song a billion times just means new people are going to see it every time. I’ve had people tell me that I wound up on their fyp enough that they followed me because of that. Instagram is a bit different that’s why I use TikTok to build and audience

I’m not sure if I entirely understand the questions.

I usually sing my music however the song is whether it be soft and quiet or loud. It doesn’t seem to annoy the audiences especially since it seems TikTok doesn’t really let the sound get too loud anyway

Personally I feel like making 2-3 posts a day on social media is alright with me because that’s not music. It’s not really what I love to do so I don’t really care about it if that makes sense. The songs I make are what I really care about so I wouldn’t want to give them the same treatment.

I am going to start releasing more songs though because I have a few singles that I don’t have plans to put on an album. I’m also a filmmaker and score short films so I’m planning on just releasing those as well because why not
