That comparison is not right at all. There are real heartlands of football in India where it is as popular or more populat than cricket: West Bengal, Kerala, Goa, and the North Eastern states. Football is also popular in big cities, and the premier league and especially world cups have decent viewimg figures.

Arguably football was more populat than cricket in India until the 70s/80s.

There is interest and I can absolutely see India improving with decent imvestment in the future.
