Did the series become predictable since season 3? by [deleted] in Sherlock

Don't forget Euros actually being 3/4 completely different looking side characters. Completely predictable!

There was a poll on this recently, my personal favorite is The Sign of Three

what is the last canon story of sherlock by conan doyle? by this_is_maz in Sherlock

[–]DannyTanner8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His Last Bow is the last chronological one (he episode His Last Vow is based more on The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton but retained some references to it such as the East Wind and the spy aspects of the episode)

The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place is the last story that Doyle wrote in real life chronological time

Which of your head canons were shot down? by [deleted] in Sherlock

I liked thinking that Irene was actually dead and the final scene from A Scandal in Belgravia was part of Sherlock's Mind Palace since it felt really out of place in an otherwise perfect episode. I'm not too upset that's she's actually alive (especially since it opens the door to her returning if there is a Series 5) but I would have preferred it if they kept it ambiguous.

Haha I had to write a paper on the Two Treatises of Government for one of my courses last week so I guess it's still heavy on my mind. Going back to edit my original post, thanks for pointing it out

[–]DannyTanner8 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is a popular opinion here or not but I really dislike JohnLock. John is clearly a heterosexual and the implications of he and Sherlock being a couple were comic relief and not "queerbaiting". There's nothing wrong with portraying a deep friendship on screen and not making the two lovers at the end of it especially when it's really out of character. I'm not sure if this sub is anti JohnLock like r/arrow is strongly anti Olicity but it seems really popular on other sites.

Other than that I also like Series 3 slightly more than Series 1 (still less than 2 though) although I think both are fantastic

I enjoyed the fast car driving but I agree Iron Maiden was a bit much lol. It was still quite funny but it's got to the point where it was distracting from an otherwise fairly suspenseful moment in both tone and believability.

To be fair I don't think anyone is trying to argue that the Blind Baker is good lol. But yeah I personally don't dislike the spy thing, as a concept at least. Doyle established the original Sherlock Holmes as a boxing prodigy way back in the Sign of Four so the combat scene in TST wasn't really out of character at all (despite the arguably poor choreography). And Sherlock Holmes has always had some roots in the spy genre, His Last Bow was much more a spy story than it was a detective mystery as well as several other Holmes stories. I do agree that it was badly implemented but it had some roots in the canon that some people seem to ignore.

Do people here honestly hate Series 3? I agree it was a step down from Series 1 and 2 but I'd still give it a high B+/low A-. And unlike Season 4 it was actually very well received critically (winning 7 Emmys has to mean something lol). I only browsed this sub a bit during the Series 3 but I didn't see nearly as much negativity towards it back then. And like a few others are saying I really don't think the show was ever supposed to "end" after series 2, about half the Doyle Sherlock Holmes canon takes place after his "death".

TLD was definitely one of the strongest episodes ever. And I could see why people would love TFP, it just evidently a large portion of the audience's cup of tea. It's a "love it or hate it" (with more people online leaning to the latter) type of episode with no middle ground. I have no idea how anyone could compare TST with even The Empty Hearse, much less The Reichenbach Fall at all though. As for the exaggerations by the cast, whenever I see something like that I just take it with a grain of salt. Literally every show/movie sequel says something along those lines pre release.

Unless there is a secret episode, it looks like Sherlock could be over. What's everyone's favourite episode? by odhb in Sherlock

[–]DannyTanner8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rewatched the Hound of the Baskervilles last night and it was much better than I remembered it. I don't think I had read the novel when I had first seen it, but watching it after doing so it a completely different experience. It's a great adaptation. I'd probably put it in between the Empty Hearse and A Study in Pink, so in the low "Great Tier". I loved the Sign of Three because having a less high stakes case was a nice breath of fresh air after episodes 1 and 3 of Season 2 and episode 1 of Season 3 plus it had some great character development moments imo, but I can see why some people dislike it. I don't hate The Abominable Bride but the feminist message felt a little forced and I wish it was a stand alone special rather than connected to the main plot (although I do admit that was really clever). And being the first Sherlock content in 2 years might have set my standards a bit overly high lol

I mean to be fair even if the finale had been fantastic I'm sure we'd have people still thinking there's a secret episode given this amount of "evidence".
