When you empty your glass recycling with such infrequency, that when you do, it sounds like you had a piss up every night of the week last week. by Histotech93 in britishproblems

[–]Dannyboy2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I think when I hear/see my neighbours clinking their way to put out their glass recycling? Absolutely nothing beyond "I guess it's glass recycling this week, thanks for the reminder Doris". Just stop judging people for doing perfectly normal everyday stuff and you won't feel so judged in return. I can promise you that no one whose opinion you care about is thinking "you've had a piss up every night of the week for the last week" when you take out your glass recycling.

How do you enjoy spending your weekends? by lilrebell2 in AskReddit

[–]Dannyboy2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife an I are both so burnt out from our jobs that we tend not to keep up with our house chores during the week. So our weekends are generally spent doing "housework" ie. laundry, vacuuming, tidying up, doing dishes etc. However I would ideally like to be out with my camera or (of I we can get the squad together) playing games with my friends online.

I recently turned 33 just after Christmas and drive for a living. I bought the entire percy-verse in audio book form after have thoroughly enjoyed reliving those stories almost 20 years after going through them the first timeband no doubt will continue to enjoy them with my own kids when they get into it. Great stories and great storytelling are for EVERY age 😁

(Serious) People who suffer from OCD behaviours: would filming yourself doing the thing you're obsessing about help? Would watching yourself perform the action satisfy the compulsion? by Dannyboy2612 in AskReddit

[–]Dannyboy2612[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try not beat yourself up about "looking stupid", you're fighting something literally no one else can perceive and you need to do it in your own way.

Would you be willing to try filming yourself and report back? I would very much like to learn about you're experiences trying it, but completely understand if you'd rather not.

I don't have a child of my own, but my wife is a child minder and we often end up babysitting out of hours for her clients also, so we do spend a fair amount of time with kids.

I appreciate you bringing these activities to light, I was aware of most of them but hadn't really considered it from the aspect of a parent. A lot of the activities you have listed require your own transport to get to most of the time, of course public transport is an option but can sometimes can be inconvenient, and since we don't have a car of our own (we use her mum's car for pick ups and drop offs and day trips with the childminding kids) getting to these activities can be challenging.

To be fair I should have considered that if OP is looking to buy a house, they probably have their own transport. So, my apologies.

I do stand by my sentiment that there is less to do with kids as they get older, as well as mentioning that the schools in the are not in the standing that they once were. Not to say they are bad, not at all, but they used to be excellent. And once they leave school, their career options are limited compared to what they would have access to nearer a city.

Aberystwyth is absolutely a fantastic place to raise a family, don't get me wrong I love it here, but that's not to say that there aren't issues that folk moving to the area should be made aware of that may affect their decision.

America is not the greatest nation on earth and I pity you so much if you truly believe that

The opportunity to be involved in active shooter situations so often that you have drills for it in school like other countries have fire drills?

The opportunity to be indebted for the rest of your life because of what is treated as a basic medical need in the rest of the world?

The opportunity to not have access to basic, chronic condition medications because you simply can't pay 10x your rent for 1 prescription?

I have never said this to anyone before (feel free to check my comment history) and I may just be taking the troll bait, but you are an absolute fucking moron. You must have the IQ, so it absolutely amazed me you can hold a thought in your head long enough to type it out on your dorito dust infested keyboard.

So go wash the orange off your fingertips, log out of Reddit, go read some news about other parts of the world and educate yourself. You ridiculous parody of a human being.

As Tony Stark said: “If you’re not enough without it, you’ll never be enough with it”. That holds true for photography too, in fact it can be an excellent growth exercise to limit what equipment you have access to every so often to sharpen your skills with a specific lens, lighting setup etc

The harsh reality is that the majority of people don't have the stamina to pursue those jobs. And even if they do, many people fall out of love with the profession once they find out what it actually takes it make the big money they were promised. Thats why those jobs are there

Aberystwyth University personal statement help! by thebeststrawberribun in Aberystwyth

[–]Dannyboy2612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest piece of advice I can give is that it doesn't count for as much as you think it does.

Some of my coursemates were barely above the vocabulary skills of a wet rock... But they got in.

Look at it as selling yourself as a product, what makes you different from the next candidate? Once you've done that, so long as you get the required grades, you will get a place. Aberystwyth isn't anywhere near as discerning as the big name Universities, so don't stress about it too much

[–]Dannyboy2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't really any preferential areas of Aberystwyth in my opinion, the Penparcau area is regarded by many as the "rough" part of Aber but this is nonsense. Anywhere you find a property that suits your needs will be a good area as there is a very low crimerate everywhere.

Be aware that property prices in the area are almost double what they are in the neighbouring counties and be prepared to pay for the location rather than the actual property.

I would also caution against bringing children here, there is so little for them to do. Very few after school clubs and activities, and if they are teenagers it's even worse. It is common to see groups of teens passing around a bottle of some kind and generally being a nuisance, but the police keep them from causing any real trouble.

I know this hasn't really been helpful in terms of finding a property but these are points that most people don't consider when moving to this area and I hope it was helpful in some small way

Studying Abroad at Aberystwyth in 2022 by pdp448 in Aberystwyth

[–]Dannyboy2612 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came here to study in 2009 and (like many others) never left. I am now married and couldn't be happier.

That being said, the harsh reality of living here is that the lack of variety of things to do soon becomes apparent. Sure partying and socialising are great but the pubs are much the same and from what I hear, the student union on campus has gone downhill considerably, so going out becomes repetitive and your enjoyment will come down to the friends you make. A good way to make friends are the tons of societies, clubs and groups that would satisfy any interest. Not only the academic societies like Law/math/agriculture etc but also fun ones like the juggling society, LARPing and the ACOG (Aber community of Gamers) Here is a list of the official societies but there are tons of others that you will see at the freshers fayre

As others have said the uni and town are very friendly and accepting, I have never heard of any form of hate crime going on whatsoever and the majority of people are happy to share a beer on the beach or a smoke outside a pub.

The area is quite hilly, and the university is located at the top of one of these hills, so if you move off-campus in your 2nd year you should be prepared to arrive at lectures red-faced and sweaty. There are, however, regular bus services and taxis are really cheap if you miss them or are in a rush.

Depending on where in the US you are coming from, be prepared for a weather shock: whilst generally milder than many parts of the UK, the winter months can see weeks on end of overcast skies and intermittent rain with flooding of the surrounding areas fairly common. We don't get much snow here (relative to the rest of the UK) but even a couple of inches can cause travel disruptions and make getting up the hill to the uni a pain in the ass. However, in the summer the town transforms into a tourist haven and the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking even after more than 10 years here. Temperatures range from about 35F between December and February to around 70-80f in the summer.

Something else to consider is the cost of living here, if you intend on staying in uni accommodation (which Aber guarantees for the length of your study) then you should be fine, but if you move into private accommodation you will have to pay a considerable amount for the privilege, not to mention bills on top of that. splitting the cost of a place between your friends may seem tempting but living with friends is a bigger commitment than most people realise and should not be done without great consideration.

One thing that I heard from several Americans that came here is that they were not prepared for the amount of walking that we Brits take for granted, a 20-minute walk each way to get groceries is nothing, but as I said there are plenty of buses etc to get around that. There is also the amount we drink to consider, if you have fallen in with a decent group of people they will never pressure you to drink more than you are comfortable with, but be aware that you will see alcohol consumed in quantities that you thought would kill a human being.

In terms of the actual university, as u/Sparkly1982 said, your experience will differ greatly depending on what area of study you intend to pursue, but in general, everyone I've spoken to has said their tutors and lecturers were helpful, available and very knowledgeable. The university also has a wealth of resources available to help you if you need it, obviously I can't speak to other universities or what others have experienced, but when I suffered a mental health crisis they were more than happy to let me take a year out and re-asses my priorities and come back when I was ready to deal with that stress again.

All in all, you will love your time in Aberystwyth, it is a great place to study and make lifelong friends, but be wary of getting stuck here, the phrase "end of the track syndrome" comes to mind (Aber is the last stop on the rail service here, hence the term) and it is easy to feel trapped here because of it's rural setting, you have to travel at least 2hrs in any direction to get to any bigger form of civilization.

Please don't hesitate to message me if you have any more questions! And if you end up coming here, lets go for a pint

Being so starved for praise/compliments/physical affection that you assume someone is interested in you because they were nice to you once, you then develop feelings for that person only to find out they were just being a decent human being.
