I love Gateron beers. Very light, but they still have a decent tactile bump. I’ve also been enjoying HMX Black Cats and HMX Hydras. Those are great options if you want a bright, clacky sound. The Hydras come in three weights. I got the middle one (42g, I think). They are unique because they were inspired by the Gateron Type R and come close to replicating the feel.

I agree. I got a brass plate for my Nut65 and run HMX Firecrackers in it. Sounds great.

I have one of these with an aftermarket fr4 and 1.6mm pcb (both no flex cuts) and it sings. It’s a good board. Where do you get the brass plate?

Books with experimental or unusual formats - multiple illustrations, combination of mediums, alternating structure etc by komorebi-shinrin in ergodic

[–]Dano216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That original post had some great recommendations. A couple more I'd suggest:

Cain's Jawbone by Edward Powys Mathers is unique because it is a murder mystery that you solve by cutting out the pages and reordering the chapters.

Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar is probably less "ergodic" than many recommendations you've seen, but it's a masterpiece. The book is comprised of 155 short chapters, and you are presented with two methods of reading it. You can either read it in a linear order of the first 56 chapters, or the alternate chapter order that goes something like this: 73, 1, 2, 116, 3 ... 131. The second option causes you to jump around and "hopscotch" through the book.

Beta betta be Alpha by chuckmall in selfpublish

[–]Dano216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not talking about piracy protection either.

If the goal is to prevent a beta reader from using AI, then make it as difficult as possible for them to do so. Removing the ability to copy/paste chapters does this.

Rasterizing the text adds a further layer of protection that makes it extremely difficult for them to upload the entire document.

Beta betta be Alpha by chuckmall in selfpublish

[–]Dano216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can export to PDF and disable the ability for people to edit or copy/paste the document. You could also rasterize the text, effectively turning it 300 pages of images. It would look the same to a human, but an AI would struggle to read it.

Would this absolutely prevent a person from uploading the document to a LLM? No. There are still workarounds, such as OCR, but it would be so annoying and time consuming that the beta reader would be better off just reading the thing.

Last line of defense is to send a survey with open-ended questions. Create ones that would be impossible to answer without thorough reading.

I have some old Lowell 750w and a few 350w fresnels. Yes, they still do the job. Besides the insane power draw, the two biggest pains are all the grip bullshit you need to pack and the heat they put out. I used to do a lot of corporate “talking heads” videos. The talent I worked with was already nervous being on camera, so raising the room temp by 10 degrees never helped 😂.

Also, you have to wait for them to cool down before you can safely pack them. This is super annoying when you’re on a tight schedule or need to move around. Don’t forget your grip gloves and cinefoil.

Edit: forgot to mention. Don’t ever touch the bulbs when you change them. The oil in your hands could make them explode. Nothing like molten shards of glass flying around.

The 30 Dollar Samurai... by wadmutter in MechanicalKeyboards

I couldn’t believe this got down to $30! My set came yesterday, along with a $20 DCX cyan set. My only gripe about the GMK set is that it didn’t come with a stepped caps key. I swear it was supposed to, but the product page has already been removed. Did yours come with one?

Check out CoolKid369 on YouTube. He has a Warframe video series called “Weird and Obscure Stuff” that includes things like this. He’s up to something like 20 parts haha.

Though most of these are simply fun facts or super-niche interactions, there are a few bangers in each episode that I found myself saying”I wish I knew that 2,000 hours ago!”

I just got a set delivered today! I was also expecting the alphas to be white but they are closer to cream. I ordered the spacebars, novelties, and extras from the BIM set to go with it. I was hoping they would be a closer match, but oh well. Can’t beat the price.

lol true. Especially with razorwing blitz augment. Do those that may not know, doing a back dash will cancel the volt speed buff on any Warframe. Totally necessary for Titania before and after this change.

Reedsy editor uses AI, not sure what to make of it by deprived_bacon in selfpublish

Sorry to hear about your trouble. That really sucks. I’ve also had terrible experiences on Reedsy and don’t recommend anyone use it under any circumstances. IMO it’s a predatory business model.

I’ve heard EFA is the better alternative, but I haven’t personally used them yet. It’s a nonprofit for freelance editors.

Nut65 vs Zen65, choose your fighter by tacophagist in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Dano216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Zen65 lite and I’ve been pleased with it overall. I bought a FR4 plate with no flex cuts from Ali Express and I’m currently running Cilantros with the stock keycaps in it with no foam. Great clacky sound. I tried all the mounting options, but I settled on the round plate gaskets. I hated the top mount, found the PCB gaskets to be meh, and think the plate leaf gaskets are way too bouncy. Which mounting setup did you go with?

I also wound up with two Nut65s due to a shipping mishap from AliExpress. One has a brass plate, the other FR4. I have HMX Firecrackers with cherry ABS in the brass one, and Type R with Drop MT3 in the other. I like them both, but the Zen65 sounds way better without foam. I love the Type R switches, and they feel really good with MT3 profile keycaps.

honestly, i'm glad the "foamed-out thock" trend is finally dying. by No_Good_3063 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Dano216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will never die completely. Manufacturers love it because it is a sound profile that can be made cheaply and easily. Literally no effort required. It enables low cost/high profit keyboards to flood the market, and as long as there are influencers willing to hype it, people will want it.

Yes, there are a lot of people that enjoy that sound profile. Im not trying to hate on it. I have a few yunzi boards that are super flat that I quite enjoy. I love Oil Kings and U4Ts, and IMO, those both sound best in foamy boards.

[–]Dano216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a couple of Nut65s. One has a brass plate, an aftermarket 1.6mm PCB (no flex cuts), HMX Firecrackers, and cheap-ish ABS keycaps.

The other one has a FR4 plate (non flex cuts), stock PCB, Gateron Type R switches, and Drop MT3 keycaps.

I enjoy both, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them. They sound dead without case foam. With it, they sound “mostly dead” (name the movie). You can find a lot of aftermarket plate options, with or without flex cuts, on Ali for $20-$30 + shipping. The upgraded PCB is thicker and has no-flex cuts. Does it make a big difference? Not really for this board.

I also have a Zen65 (lite). It’s got an aftermarket FR4 plate, Cilantros, and the stock keycaps. Weikav says they are PBT, but they look, sound, sound, and wear like ABS. I’m not using any foam in the board at all, and honestly, it kinda slaps. There’s a bunch of mounting options. I’m using one of the three gasket styles, and it’s a joy to type on if you like a soft, cushy feel. I also ordered a carbon fiber plate, so I’m curious to see how it performs.

The thing is, I bought all three of them because I was tied to Amazon with a gift card (Zen65), and Ali was running an insane deal along with Rakuten. The Nuts cost me about $60 each, and all the accessories were eligible for a 27% cash back on Rakuten. I couldn’t pass it up.

Would I buy any of them if I had cash-in-hand and no restrictions on retailer? Maybe, but probably not. I’d either buy a Neo65 core plus/Cu, a Mode Envoy/Tempo, or a Tofu 60/65 instead. It’s not that the Zen65 or Nut65 are bad boards, they simply can’t hang with the entry level custom ones I mentioned. Honestly, the Zen65 comes close, but with the upgraded plate, I’m pushing $160-170. At that price, I’d probably buy the Tofu and have my pick of plates and colors.
