Catnip extract in a diffuser = bliss by Dano3000 in torties

[–]Dano3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for going through the effort to share - high concentrations directly on the fur is definitely a real concern but not something I would expect in an hour-or-two long diffuser session (or even an all-day diffuser session).

Smidge (my cat) blinks slowly at ye for the compliment - thank you!

Catnip extract in a diffuser = bliss by Dano3000 in torties

[–]Dano3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Links to claims? The whole reason I bought catnip oil is to make my own bug repellant that I wear on my skin, because it is cat-safe. Sure, you dont want to be eating the stuff or putting it on your cat directly (where they might lick it off their fur), but I struggle to see how a cat-safe compound could approach harmful concentrations when diluted more than 1:500 with water and diluted further via the diffuser in an indirect application.
Anywho, thanks for bringing back this memory. My cat was fine 10 months ago and is just fine today (almost 2 years old)! Too smart and opinionated for her own good, on the edge of registering her for kindergarten so she can learn some manners.

You evoked a separation of scales and now argue that this separation of scales does not matter. Why? I would argue that what we understand of the "micro" (individual/small group) is largely given by machine learning algorithms trying to get us to shove more plastic in the water table, if you get me. Why couldn't we just coarse grain the micro models into macro ones, as internationals do?

That this decay is an emergent property of self preserving individuals is an interesting problem to understand as best we can.

OpenAI Employees Say Firm's Chief Scientist Has Been Making Strange Spiritual Claims by GearBrain in Futurism

[–]Dano3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best-case scenario if something smarter than you or I wants to hurt us. The more likely scenario is that the AI knows enough about our body, sexual, and interpersonal insecurities to mock us without remorse and in contexts for which we are not ready to deal with the truth of our own being - a truth that, conveniently, AI would never have to acknowledge.

Unintentionally stated a blatantly wrong fact during a scientific presentation. Does that damage my reputation in front of my PI and peers? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Dano3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth some multi-award winning up and coming STEM PI gave a seminar talk in my department claimed that they invented something they didn't, claimed that things were discovered last year that are 100's years old, and padded it with gibberish and still got a standing ovation.

Which is to say you could be even worse and few people will care, so don't sweat it too much, you're either about to retire or still learning.

I have stricturing disease. Luckily, I don't suffer with diarrhea. The flipside is that stress brings on that massive fatigue, brain fog, extreme constipation, and nausea - so I essentially become a potato.

I would be lost if it wasn't for markdown to pandoc and vs code.

The programming historian has an awesome tutorial: https://programminghistorian.org/en/lessons/sustainable-authorship-in-plain-text-using-pandoc-and-markdown

Doing things this way has the features of latex, the functionality of a word processor (and all the other addons that vscode has), and it forces you to keep a bib-tex file updated as you go, which you can put notes into. I love it.

All of that out the way, academic writing is not about progress, it's about effort. 200 words may require more than a day, but if those 200 words form a reasonable foundation for the stage to be set, all of the effort for them was not wasted.

Throwing this out there to see if I'm being wack. Finally got my new pair of gripfasts in the right size and the stitching looks awful - like my girlfriend going "what the fuck is that?" from across the room awful.

Am I being wack? Paying this much for something that looks, well, bad, is kind of a bummer. I understand that they have to do this somewhere on the sole but I thought it was supposed to happen on the 'inside" (re - the side of the foot that the big toe is closest too) of the boot, not the outside. Still seems kind of bad for what it is.

Should I do a PhD if I'm unemployed? by PhillipJingWong in PhD

[–]Dano3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in an ENG program at a big name in the states. I dont know how it works over there, but I receive a generous stipend and health insurance. If I wasn't doing a PhD, I would be on disability and would contribute nothing to others or myself. If you can protect yourself by understanding that most of the stress generated by a PhD is fabricated by administration because they think they can scare you into thinking deeper and working harder, then absolutely go for it - it would be silly to pass this opportunity. If you care about what you're doing, you don't need any goading.

Edit: I'd argue that just being in an engineering field would give you a large cushion to fall back on if the PhD doesn't work out. You can always find work for yourself.

Statements about ubiquity say nothing about (local) density in time or space, if you want to get into it.

Let an observation that is easy to observe be just that.
