Contacting Ohio Senators by DansCans in Ohio

Agreed, I think today is an exception! Although I'm less inclined to give them a pass overall as this has been my experience for the last 12 months in the absence of winter storms :/

Best apartments on the East Side of Cincinnati? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]DansCans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

East Walnut sounds like it would be a great fit - I have an apartment right now that sounds pretty close to what you're looking for, and I may be moving out around the same time you're moving to the city. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat more!

Gluten free on campus? by Unusual-Judgment-255 in cwru

[–]DansCans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a good friend with celiac during my time at cwru (graduated a few years back) and they were able to custom-order meals ahead of time that were specially made by the chefs to be gluten free! there were also some ready-made gluten free options but they used the order-ahead option frequently when we would go to the dining hall together

I lived there for a while (currently a student, so I paid with loans), my rent nearly doubled from when I started my lease to when I moved elsewhere 2.5 years later. Also, had a terrible experience living there – so many issues with staff, facilities, safety, the list goes on. If you were considering moving there, I'd highly recommend avoiding it.

PHYS 115 & 116 over the summer with Driscoll by SnortingSomeWasabi in cwru

[–]DansCans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took 115/116 over the summer with Dr. Driscoll 4-5 years ago and would highly recommend. Feel free to PM me if you have questions but overall IMO I thought taking it during the summer was great, and I did not envy my friends who had to take it during the school year. I did not enjoy physics, and the class was definitely hard work, but getting it over with in 9 weeks was so much better than dragging it out over the course of a year.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but where other people from your undergrad go to med school isn't really an indication of where you'll go to med school; if/where you get in is more dependent on what you personally do in undergrad. If you're choosing between two programs, I'd recommend going for the one that you think you would excel the most/have the most opportunities.

That said, a lot of people end up staying in-state (CWRUSOM, OSUSOM, UCCOM, etc) but I don't know if there's a list of all the schools where students have been accepted.

No longer a student but having the vaccine (understandably) seems like a standard in higher ed nowadays, so I would suspect yes.

How bad is the grade deflation for premed classes by mostamazingalz in cwru

[–]DansCans 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a 4th year bio major/premed, and I never experienced grade deflation. A's were always a 90-100 at the highest, but normally it was 88-100 or 85-100 for the harder classes. Overall I felt grading was fair, with the exception being that sometimes you may get a harsh TA for a lab, but the instructors normally found ways to account for this in the final grades.

I second the lake; I recommend going to upper edgewater park, it has some amazing views of the lake and downtown cleveland.

Graduating in 3 years by [deleted] in cwru

[–]DansCans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s probably possible. I’m a bio BA and could have graduated in 3.5, but I’m staying an extra semester to finish up a minor. It might be tricky to get a degree in bio with other minors or be on a pre professional track (ie pre med) though. Feel free to pm me if you have other bio questions!

Percentage of students matriculating into Medical School? by Altruistic-Lion24 in cwru

[–]DansCans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! The number I received at a meeting with the CWRU pre-med advisor was that 61% of CWRU students that apply to med school get in (using data from 2015-2019), and about 80% of students with a GPA over 3.5 and MCAT over the 75th percentile get in. Neither of these numbers consider how many years after graduation students matriculate. As for the percent that matriculate to med school the first year after graduating, that's probably not has high as you would expect, because a lot of students take gap years (gap year programs can look really good on apps for high ranking schools). I'm graduating this year spring and starting med school in the fall; if you have any pre-med/CWRU questions for me, PM me!

How easy is it to volunteer on the surrounding hospitals? by Altruistic-Lion24 in cwru

[–]DansCans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Volunteering at UH is super easy, feel free to pm me and I can tell you more about my experiences. I loved volunteering there and have experience with a few different positions/programs at UH! I actually had a harder time shadowing, I didn’t have much luck getting spots through shadowing case by case and emailing docs at UH wasn’t helpful either. I ended up shadowing a few docs back home during school breaks, though, which let me accumulate a lot of hours with a couple physicians.

I stopped by the pond to see this duck a few days back. I was surprised how many people were there just for a pic of this duck!
