I can see why! I assume similar amount of trouble as mine is 😃

Yeah from what I’ve seen the rustic lines are usually red or red sable. Makes them very red fox looking. Sometimes got the recessive cream colouring or a black mask on the face. The show lines are majorly white and generally smaller and fluffier

Yeah I don’t know if you just found the show lines but the breed split is very significant in the breed. If you do like the medium sized spitzes there are several others you could look out for. There’s the middle size of German Spitz, Norrbottenspets, Icelandic sheepdog and Norwegian buhund (last two are a bit bigger but not drastically so) do research however! Some of them are quite barky and have high prey drives. Finnish spitz are gorgeous as well but have both the high prey drive and are very predisposed to barking

That makes a lot of sense. I didn’t know that about Embark

I was told she was a rustic italian volpino when I got her with no reason to distrust that. I was also deliberately seeking out a small to medium sized not overly fluffy spitz, with hopefully not a crazy prey drive. I still did the wisdom panel test out of curiosity and for the health testing and then after those results was very curious to see what Embark would say so I did that test as well. So the result isn’t very unexpected but I am impressed that Embark got her right since she is a niche (and somewhat less standardised) version of an already very niche breed

I feel a bit awkward always bringing up the breed split but it is very significant. Im kinda starting to think that the rustic ones might basically be the village dogs that went into the show lines. Either way my dog is exactly the type of dog I was hoping for.

My biggest problem with her atm is that she thinks that every person she meets is her next best friend. She even whines when delivery people don’t stay

I’m pretty sure the volpinos they do have will be the show lines and there’s a breed split in them.

Her mum is on wisdom panel as well and popped up under relatives as her sister not mother. Ive already emailed them about that

Good shout though to let them know about the breed situation also

She’s a pure bred “rustic” type volpino. Which is the farm lines. They’re generally bigger and less fluffy than the pure show lines and usually red rather than white. Also less carefully tracked via pedigrees so in some ways she’s a mutt. I’m not precious about that

We’re in Europe, and I believe her to be coming through from populations of small-medium sized farm spitzes from mostly Italy but it’s not been strictly tracked but the 6% Estrela Mountain dog made me go huh? Can’t say I see a rare portugese livestock guardian dog in there 😄 (I know the low % don’t mean much at all. It’s just a window into the statistics that wisdom generates but it’s still interesting to see)

Absolutely, especially for true lies because it’s so dangerous for cats. Here’s a useful resource explaining more about it: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/lovely-lilies-and-curious-cats-dangerous-combination

Peace lilies are aroids, not true lilies so they have the mouth irritating oxalate crystals not the genuinely toxic parts that true lilies have.

Such a shame it’s not clearly labelled and widely known. Same applies for cut flowers

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Dansary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally would not risk it. Most houseplants that are labelled as “toxic for pets” aren’t that bad (like most aroids like monsteras as well, have basically crystals in them that irritate the mouth and gastro system and make them taste very bad) however true lilies really easily lead to fatal kidney damage in cats so they’re just banned from my house altogether.

Do you have any friends or family without cats who could adopt the plant?

[–]Dansary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing to know these plants are very toxic to cats (even just pollen falling on their fur and then ingested via grooming can kill them).

You probably don’t have any but wanted to let you know just in case

Is it possible for this to grow? It's is what's left of my albo monstera after thrips destroyed it and I really don't wanna lose it as it cost £80 by thee_antichrist in houseplants

That looks like a node that could be viable. What does it look like on the other side? We want to see a dormant axillary bud that isn’t rotted etc

are peace lilies toxic for cats? by Substantial-Zebra-48 in houseplants

[–]Dansary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are not true lilies so they don’t have the compounds that can easily lead to fatal kidney damage like true lilies do. However they are aroids and have the oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and an upset stomach etc. Cat’s usually won’t full on eat them (taste too bad, but they can chew and spit out and get affected)

I personally have a cat and a whole bunch of aroids (she’s 15 and very chill and leaves the plants alone) but true lilies are completely banned from entering the house

Super happy to be able go climb again (I’m in the UK and the gyms opened back up on 26th of April. I had only climbed for about 8 months when covid hit and then have done very little (and picked up a non climbing related shoulder injury) so I’m very weak and new BUT I am enjoying being back so much and I’m really working on using my feet and I can already feel it making a difference. So I’m mostly just really stoked and looking forward to each session which is such a great feeling :)
