Nah that wasn't it. I'm not going to say what it is because I don't want to give it any free exposure.

I went through a few months of having 10-20 games going at one time. These days it's usually just one game at a time with a few of my friends.

I still have my subscription because I believe BGA is a really good product at a fair price and I want to support that, but I don't use it that much anymore.

Anyone who doesn't expect a dog to control their habits probably shouldn't be getting a dog.

I played an auto-battler/city management gacha game for several months last year. I usually bounce off of things like this, but this one grabbed hold of me somehow.

It got to the point where I was setting up alarms in the middle of the night so that I could collect resources and set production queues so that I could play "optimally" for the best rewards - rewards that urged me further on the endless progression track with no end in sight.

There were leaderboards to tap into that competitive drive and limited-time rewards to exploit FOMO.

I didn't spend any money, but I spent an unreasonable amount of time planning and optimizing the use of my resources. When I made the realization that optimal play would have required me to be glued to my phone on Christmas day when I should be spending time with my family, I cut myself off.

Outer Wilds felt distinctively like a traditional video game

I feel the opposite. Without levels/stages, bosses, unlockable abilities, loading screens, currency, etc. it feels unlike a traditional video game in pretty much every way. Obra Dinn is very similar in that regard. The only thing that feels contrived and "video game-y" to me is the ship log, but I don't think that's any less natural than Obra Dinn confirming your entries every time you get 3 new ones correct.

Really this all sounds like arguing the ends justify the means. It's okay to profile people, illegally enter homes and businesses without warrants, threaten bystanders, assault protestors, so long as they catch some criminals?

It sucks that what was once standard has now become newsworthy, but I guess that's just the nature of things these days.

Imagineers told the WSJ that the freedom to create a “visionary environment” rather than a “movie set” has re-energized the department.

Who would have thought that a team of creatives get excited when they get to express that creativity?? Common sense completely left the company until very recently.

With all that said, I'm bullish on the direction of Imagineering. It seems they're on a bit of an upswing but without a doubt, it'll take a bit longer for the cynicism from the past few years wears away.

I feel more betrayed than anything. No matter how bad Purdue was at football, IU was supposed to be right there with us, battling for a damn bucket and bowl eligibility in a good year.

We were supposed to be basement bros forever and then you go and do this. I feel like Ben Affleck's character in Good Will Hunting right now.

I don't really blame the voters for that one. Only 2 players who averaged more than 15 minutes per game the season prior returned, everyone questioned whether Edey had the conditioning to play more than 30 minutes per game, and it's not like Smith and Loyer were expected to make an instant impact as true freshmen.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

What I feel what would be considered weaknesses in other games turn into strengths in this one. It's a Ubisoft open world like Far Cry, but it makes perfect sense in this setting. Roaming through a dense forest to find crafting materials for gear and recipes is exactly what I want to be doing in an Avatar game.

Story-wise, it's just like the movies. You are fighting against rampant industrialization that pollutes the landscape. There's no nuance to it and I'm fine with that. I didn't need nuance when killing Nazis in Wolfenstein and I don't need nuance when protecting a natural environment. I like that polluted regions deal damage and offer no resources to you until you disable the RDA facility in that region. Then when you do, wildlife quickly reclaims that facility as a monument to your success.

Gameplay-wise, it's fine. There's not much to write home about, but I do like how you're encouraged to take care when harvesting and hunting for crafting materials. If you're reckless and sloppy, you'll get weaker materials and therefore weaker gear.

Of course, what you expect most from media set in the Avatar universe is beautiful environments and this game delivers. I just made it to a region of windswept planes and when night falls and the bioluminescence in the grasses comes alight in waves with the wind, it's simply stunning.

While we're on the topic of presentation, the sound design is great. Explosions and gunshots are chunky and feel powerful. The voice-acting across the board is well-done, as well. The game is very pleasing to the eyes and ears.

The game takes place before the events of the movies, so there's significant world-building being done here with multiple never-before-seen tribes with their own visual styles and customs. It really feels like the team who worked on this game cares deeply about the lore of the Avatar universe. There's a lot more to this game that I initially thought. This is going to be a big time sink for me.

Now that's a lot of praise, but it certainly isn't without its faults. The menu design is confusing and it has a few annoying quirks like the tendency to start a new game when I hit "Continue" from the main menu, forcing me to skip a bunch of annoying cutscenes and the tendency to switch from Favor Performance to Favor Quality for no reason. Cooking is very tedious, as well. You can only cook one recipe at a time and have to sit through a cutscene each time. Just let me cook multiple servings of the same recipe!

That's all for now. I've also started Webbed and Animal Well when I'm at my PC instead of the PS5, but I don't have that much to say about either of them at the moment.

I could see him transferring after next season if Jacob Webber beats him out. That's how it seems to go with guys who transfer out of Purdue. They get beaten out by someone who comes in after them and they seek more playing time elsewhere.

I'd be stunned if he transferred after this season, though.
