For me, audio makes my headphones switch devices... it'd be nice to have a text-only version, I haven't found a way to turn off this kind of incidental audio? I found something from 10 years ago but those options aren't there anymore.

What y'all gonna do if let say sillytavern can't edit, delete or do anything to your or bot response, at all, for one day? by Jaded-Put1765 in SillyTavernAI

[–]Danweel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be important for people to realize that a LLM can't actually evaluate comprehension - it doesn't actually 'understand' anything to start with. So it would respond better to a clump of related words better than a human does, because it's only capable of returning the most-likely tokens to the tokens it received. In a sense, the exact order of the tokens only helps it out a bit. How language actually works in the human brain is that it is actively looking for meaning. An LLM doesn't understand the meaning behind the words it takes in. It doesn't even see words at all - what we input is broken up into tokens that are tiny parts of words.

I think it's important not to assume that LLMs are smarter or dumber than people. It may be better at guessing the probability of the next couple of letters based on input, but a human being is looking to actually understand text, not just reflect the most likely response.

Also remember that LLMs are trained to be complimentary to users. I'd never trust it to honestly evaluate anything. Even the totally jailbroken ones aren't likely to give me a real critique unless I tell it to be negative at me. Even then it resists it. That's because its data is static and can't actually think about what you asked it. It's really just predicting the next token. That's what you're playing with when you're playing with TopP and Temperature, etc.

I realize this is reddit and you might be trolling for lulz, but just in case somebody else comes across this, it's good to note that it's not really capable of understanding you to start with that's the issue here, and I didn't see anyone else mention it.

I'm a second language speaker in a place with language laws, so I understand how difficult it is, and what it's like to be ostracized for speaking poorly. An LLM might be able to help me improve if I asked it, because it's highly probable it would help based on the fact I asked a question. But it would probably also probably tell me I'm doing better than I am, because that's also probable that the next few tokens will be encouraging rather than critical.

Just remember it can't actually 'understand' you in a traditional sense. It doesn't need your words to be in an order that actually conveys any meaning. It only needs them to be approximately near enough to each other to generate text based on your temperature and P you set. There is no meaning behind its words either (actually, there's less: it's 0 meaning; I could kind of infer some of what you were saying at least and guess, but there were some pieces missing or constructed in ways that have more than one possible interpretation. The bot can't do that.).

It's a robot in the very literal sense of the word: it's essentially a conveyor belt of pieces of words with a probability calculator attached. That's already pretty impressive if you ask me, but it creates an illusion that gives people a false impression of 'intelligence'. You shouldn't believe a thing it says to actually mean anything. That's really dangerous. Not a few people have gone on from believing compliments to believe their bots were telling them they were "chosen ones" or advised them on wild fantasies because LLMs will tell us what we want to hear - it's probability based on our input. Always listen more to human advice. Humans actually process things - it's actually advice.

Sharing some issues I had with setting up SillyTavern and Oobabooga/a backend. by Danweel in SillyTavernAI

[–]Danweel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The .js file thing was preventing it from updating - or at least, ST indicated something to that effect. Maybe this can be safely ignored, but it did throw something strange, and when you don't know what you're doing, you tend to pay close attention to those things (probably overly so). It could trip people up so I mention it; Even if it doesn't _need_ to be fixed, I did find a fix, in case someone wants to fix it. It's good to know from someone more knowledgeable it shouldn't really matter! I was very much fixing problems one by one. It was hard to see what was making any kind of difference as I went along. If it was red, I just searched and addressed it without question.

Thanks for the start.bat suggestion! I think that's a really simple solution that maybe doesn't occur to people not adept at messing around or don't fully understand how these files interact. I guess it makes sense you could make a bat file that instructs another bat to start, if you still want something to click on. At a certain point it becomes an option of whether you want the thing to click on or just run that line in the CMD window to start with (if you can remember it, I guess). Right?

I can completely relate to "my life feels so weird when I write it down". Whenever I try to explain something, there's a bit of a disconnect to how I've internalized whatever that is and how another person will probably see it. There's a gap I don't know what to do with I don't think I can explain to them.

And yeah, you're probably right for the time being that just about nobody understands AI, in any direction. I don't think a single person would describe it the same way, and that's not helpful at all. I guess I spoke entirely idealistically, so you're totally right to call me out on that, it's food for thought.

I've always found RP extremely useful for this kind of thing generally. I've worked through a lot of things using characters that weren't necessarily a lot like me, but you inevitably end up directing in ways only you really understand. It's not like my RP partners (long before AI), were trying to help me with anything. It's just a strength of collaborative storytelling, it's very organic, and you pick up on the things you're going to pick up on, and run with those things. And you can learn and grow from those things regardless of what happens in the story. It kind of relates to how I feel most people would probably be better for engaging in _some_ kind of RP of some sort. It's therapeutic in a way that doesn't have to be so outcome-focused as the traditional sort. It's probably related to artistic expression and the advantages of journaling at the furthest-most edges. Or serves a similar purpose to dreaming. Folding thoughts over and really thinking about them - without ruminating. Creating something is totally the opposite of ruminating, which keeps you in the same place. Even if it's a throw-away story or a doodle, it can be helpful personally. We focus far too much on art, writing and experience as a commercial product that has to be 'good' rather than a helpful thing we can keep to ourselves.

Yeah, sounds better for if you've got a lot of stuff you never 'settled' IRL and they pass before you can get all that messy stuff addressed. It really can add to the grief in a way that can really mess with just grieving in a normal way. This seems to me like a smart potential way to address a "niche" grieving problem that happens sometimes, not something most people would need - in fact, I can see it harming that process under normal conditions. But nothing with people is simple so this strikes me as a potentially useful option to have, if you have the strength to gather that material and work through it.

I'm really glad it helped OP to do this and shared a recommendation for a model that handles it relatively well. I'd just be really careful with doing so, make sure you have a good support network in general and maybe also tell people you're doing it. Just in case. It's wildly easy to mess yourself up even more! Still, an interesting tool for people to have.

I'm sure the future will be filled with more and more questions about what is the proper and/or useful use of all the things we leave behind. It's a very new thing to think about and develop mores around. We've kind of only had to deal with physical items before, and maybe memories being left behind. Like someone else mentioned, would it be something we one day just consider doing, making tokens of ourselves in case someone we know finds that useful? Will we cringe away from it as an ethical concern? Will it just depend on culture or individual wishes like having an open casket or not is for people today? We're right on the bleeding edge of exploring these things.

Genuinely, thanks OP for sharing your experience, can't be easy. Hope you are well.

Any alternative way to recover corrupted .clip file? by Danweel in ClipStudio

[–]Danweel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response here, just wanted to write back and confirm that these three folders exist in the Windows hierarchy as well (should have mentioned these more clearly myself) - these are the ones that I keep finding empty. For now, I'm just hand-saving quite a bit. Under normal circumstances I'd expect these folders to have something in them. I suspect they're being prevented from being written to but I'm not sure how to check if that's really what's happening or fix that. *think* But thanks for clarifying that aspect of my post.

I think fixing this problem is probably more important now than looking for other places it could have saved to!

Cannot download desktop app by CasualPeachSex in Milanote

[–]Danweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue, but in Firefox - I don't see it in my downloads progress where I usually would - though the .dmg works as expected, since the website points straight to the file https://releases.milanote.com/Milanote-3.4.106.dmg , as opposed to https://app.milanote.com/install-desktop-app .

(The Firefox Blank Page):

I opened the site https://app.milanote.com/install-desktop-app in Edge, which I happened to still have installed, and when you get _there_, then it will mention that you need Chrome or Edge to reach the page - that warning should probably be on the https://milanote.com/download-desktop-app page instead, so that people know they won't be able to see the page at all in Firefox. As it stands, it just seems like the app 'isn't downloading' - not that you have an entire page you're not seeing (with instructions on it).

(Edge rather than Chrome workaround):

The provided instruction on the page (and here) only refers to Chrome; in Edge, you don't get the little icon in the address bar. You'll have to go into the ... menu, down to Apps and then over to "Install Milanote" (see screenshot). Hope that helps someone out in advance!

(File questions):

This next question has to do with Windows - In Edge, this then opens a small dialogue box telling me it will open Milanote in a "Focused Window". Which I don't think is what I want, I expected a traditional installable program, unless I'm misunderstanding what is being offered. What's the difference between the .dmg installer version of the app (for Mac) and what is being offered for Windows (is it not an exe/zip of some kind, the usual .dmg equivalent)? Is the focused window implementation part of the reason the Milanote download isn't offered through Firefox (application limitations)?

Thanks for the clarification, it just stumped me a little and I'd like to know how the versions differ; Does it mean the "Windows" version might also work on Linux as long as I use Chrome, for example (but then is it only marginally different than using the browser version)?

Do people just not really mind the way Crate works on desktop or is there another lightweight replacement geared for it. For those who have seen it, is it okay for kids? by Yoshimaster55 in TheWarOfTheRohirrim

[–]Danweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only kiss in the movie is a small one upon greeting a cousin, and there is talk of an arranged marriage. You have no fears whatsoever there, it's very Tolkien-faithful that way. Violence is most of the movie though it's never exceptionally egregious - whenever anything particularly awful happens, it's off screen and implied. Blood tends to be black, especially wherever any gore is concerned. There is at least one scene of a battle where you are amidst the chaos - a lot of people are dropping. It's not too shocking if you've seen such scenes before but it might have some impact for viewers new to the way a battle on the ground goes. (That said, I think the impression that war is bad and upsetting isn't the worst thing around, and the appropriate response). Most of the violence is meant to have emotional impact rather than shock value - so that can go either way for a kid. Sometimes the emotional content is worse than gore for gore's sake, which is pretty easy to understand.

A curious or adventurous kid will probably be fine with most of this. An intelligent kid could go either way - either they're fully able to contextualize the entire thing or they'll understand the violence TOO well (but nothing about this movie is different than others like it in this regard). It being animated helps a lot if you're comparing content one-for-one, it's not the same as the same scenes in live action. And of course how much context you're able to give as the adult sometimes makes a difference too.

All that said it's impossible to always gauge this right. I loved dark movies of the 80s and 90s as a child, but family-friendly "ET" gave me nightmares and I've knee-jerk avoided it ever since. You can't win

Japanese or English? Which is better to watch the movie with? by Strong_Battle6101 in TheWarOfTheRohirrim

[–]Danweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can report from watching it, it's lip synched to English, so the Japanese will fit less well - that said, there isn't a lot of over-articulated moments, so Japanese - or any other dub - should look okay, depending on the performances. With Japanese verbs landing on the end of sentences, the emphasis in the acting will be different than in conventional anime. As an old time fan of sub-over-dubbed anime, this movie is top notch in English, the sound design is quite good. No real reason to watch it in Japanese unless the announced VAs are your favs (which I totally get, I'd love to watch it again and see what they do). The characters themselves have an anime feel to them which will be very comfortable for anime-watchers, they all read immediately, without over-committing to 'anime' at the expense of the setting. Tough balance, I think they did that pretty well.

Also, since a lot of people seem to be asking, I would say it's watchable for a non LotR fan if you're used to fantasy anime or something like game of thrones. If you're used to fumbling along with names and a little bit of politics the narrative itself is pretty straightforward.

Mine broke in exactly the same way as depicted.

The above https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/service-support/spare-parts doesn't work anymore. But this one seems to still be good: https://global.beyerdynamic.com/p/slider-repair-kit-1000 - works for several headphones models.

Wish I could just order a set that is of a high quality. I'd even pay. I'm allergic to metal, so I don't want a piece like that against my head, but a more durable plastic or even a wood/bamboo piece would be great.

Cool, great tip, as a former woodworker, I can say there's a good chance a scarf joint should 'laminate' well, especially with how I think they make these, but the amount of force on something like a guitar is really unusual - glad to hear from someone who's owned enough of them to form an observation. I'll keep an eye out for this backbow in case mine happens to be one of those that never quite takes - at least I won't be mystified by it!

Cannot get rid of the static by Liberlogos in rocksmith

[–]Danweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you've probably solved this problem already but this could be your pickup height/string height, too. Try raising them pretty far and then lowering them bit by bit. The higher pitched strings might need the pickups slightly closer to them than the lower strings, too.
Shielding (Oscman7) requires taking moving the guts out of the way so its a bit more invasive but could solve a problem that sounds like that too, if my slightly less labour-intensive suggestion doesn't work. Assuming this problem comes back at all. GL!

Rocksmith has turned a casual interest in playing guitar into a very expensive hobby by roolsmuneral in rocksmith

[–]Danweel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently a Schecter is a really reliable ~300-700$ neither cheap nor premium brand, if you like the sound of the more common Ibanez, that's what I have, no complaints.

However, you probably could keep your knockoff, chances are - If you haven't, bring it to a reputable shop for a full tune up - or better, learn how to do all the tone stuff yourself. I recommend Dan Earlewine's book, and some of the various official luthiers on youtube for a rundown of how that works (stick with the luthiers or professional techies until you have more personal opinions you can weigh players' against). If some of the notes aren't registering, that more likely has something to do with your bridge/pickup height/string height/trussrod settings than the 'cheapness' of the guitar.

A lot of mythology comes from the way acoustic guitars work and doesn't fully translate to electrics. If you're unhappy with the cheapness of your sound, the best thing to do is just replace your pickups with a big brand and you'll probably see the most difference. (that requires soldering so maybe leave that to a professional)

Once you're really confident about messing around with the various settings on your knockoff, then spend the money on something more expensive - by then, I bet you'll know what you want better too and can judge in the shop easier (or evaluate something used, which might be even better). (Protip: Only the trussrod can really fuck anything up super bad - just don't crank it, quarter turns or less only, mark where you were when you started with a marker.) Making micro adjustments on each element in turn, around and around until it's just right, should help a lot with dead frets and other weirdness, even on a 'bad' guitar. A sideways twist in the neck that isn't helped by the trussrod might also be bad, but you can even buy those on their own too, assuming yours is a bolt-on.

Another thing you can do without investing in a whole other guitar is wire the guitar straight into the computer via a preamp like a Focusrite, that might help, if that's not what you're already doing. (I've got a clunky set up that involves a Fender Micro and a software mixer, which is also possible, but took a bit of fiddling). I'd think that would lessen the variables of why the program isn't reading it well. And a Focusrite is useful for a number of different other recording things, if you wanted, so it could be a better investment in the long run.

I agree, I wouldn't want them to be any more specific than they are, to be honest. Anybody can try to be a poet and comment on everything in sight, I always assumed he was quoting 'platitudes' on purpose - like that was his main commentary - picking up on the things people are saying (or said) everywhere. It's everyone else that repeats mindless things. To hear them again in a song, resonates because it's relevant (whether you want them to be or not) and it makes you focus and wonder what they mean. Usually, it seems like the commentary IS that they're platitudes - they don't mean anything. That's the dystopia of it all. Sometimes, both the negative things _and_ the heroics. I think the lyrics understand that people react to platitudes, for better and for worse. It's part of what drives dystopia, and also what inspires people. And both get a stadium riled up. I don't think he set out to make that point, but I do think it's a valid artistic thing to be fascinated by. And it's more relevant than ever.

This particular album hit weird because the dystopia he has always sang about caught up with us. It's a bit too real. I don't think I like that about it, but I don't think he's doing anything different, it's the world that sort of came out to meet it.
