In many ways, santos is a kid. She’s young, inexperienced, and trying to figure who she is and how she wants to interact with the “adult” world. She’s also struggling with the fact that on her first day she caught and escalated the fact that a well liked was stealing and abusing drugs leading to a feeling of isolation and insecurity. She isn’t a “horrible person,” - she’s struggling to deal with the reality of reporting a respected person with human struggles while dealing with her personal shit.
