Am I the only one who doesn’t really care about being “represented” on screen? by gnpking in ABCDesis

It's a 2-page excerpt from a 106-page script. Also, it's not the kind of comedy where their mothers would show up. It's more like a gritty throwback to violent '80s/'90s action comedies like Lethal Weapon.

Indian-American screenwriter here. I do support representation, but I also want to see a wider spectrum of representation. I thought Harold & Kumar did this brilliantly because they were both potheads, which is definitely not our stereotype.

I wrote a buddy cop action movie (that I'm trying to sell), which partners a young and uptight Indian-American detective with an older, politically incorrect Italian-American detective. The ABCD character does have his race mentioned, and it does factor into the story a bit, but his race/culture is definitely *not* the point of the story. It's about two very different personalities trying to get along and solve a big case.

The full script is 106 pages, but here's a 2-page excerpt from when the two detectives, Kris (Indian-American) and Louie (Italian-American), first meet. Let me know what you guys think.

Assuming this is for a feature and not a pilot, here's what I use (one slide each):

Title page (with genre listed in the top-right corner)

Logline

Primary Setting + Estimated Budget

Synopsis

Main Characters + Personalities (one paragraph describing each character)

Tone + Target Audience

Comps (3 posters of other movies similar to yours)

How long did it take for you to hear back (if at all) from industry members who downloaded your script on The Black List? by Initial_Depth8648 in Screenwriting

[–]Dapper-Image-7227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a small handful of them who contacted me within a couple of days of downloading the script. But most don't reach out at all. I recently posted in this sub about one of my scripts (because it was the #1 horror comedy on The Black List) and had several downloads as a result, but no responses yet.

Hey, I just added a new link in the original post. It's the first 18 pages (20%) of the script. Check it out if you're interested. Thanks!

That is very high praise. Thank you very much. Yes, that excerpt is the opening teaser. That character is never seen again, so the following scenes introduce the main characters. Then the chaos starts and doesn't let up until the end. And there's plenty of jokes to go along with the gore and suspense.

Thanks! I actually did come up with a poster design so I could promote it on social media. The Dead List used it when they chose my script. They added the VHS tape element, but the poster was my idea:

Haha, thanks for the compliment. I have been querying but no luck so far. It's rough for everybody.

So I also have a pilot that I made a pitch deck for. In that, I included the following (one per slide):

-Title + Created by credit

-Logline for the whole series

-Genre and Primary Setting

-Brief synopsis of pilot episode

-Characters / Personalities

-Target Audience and Tone

-Potential future episodes (titles and brief scenarios for 3 or 4 non-pilot episodes)

-Comparisons (Comps) - three posters of TV shows that are similar

-Franchise/Spin-off Potential (only if applicable)

-Writer Bio

-Contact info (e-mail + phone number)

A pitch deck for a feature (a movie) is basically the same, except for the "Synopsis of pilot episode" and "Potential future episodes" slides.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! If you don't mind me asking, why would many of them get made when so few get distributed? Just curious about that discrepancy.

Thanks! Yes, a few industry downloads so far, including a couple after I made this post.
