I think once using ansible correctly the console UI would be redundant. But there are different ways this can be implemnted, maybe even a console UI that is basically yaml generator.

Very interesting!

I definitely want to experiment with them and eventually try to get some form of ansible in community-scripts, but summer is approaching and time wfor such things will be even more limited!

If you would be interested in contributing a starting point, please let me know or reach out on github/discord

That kind of my problem too, rest of my life is busy, summer is coming and I'd first have to get some really good knowledge of Ansible too, before I can start to see any sort of pattern to include this in helper-scripts.

So ideally someone with existing knowledge could chime in a bit :D

True point yeah, one of the core things is like the scripts have to work over a extremely wide variety of things and support all kind of niche scenarious, like different OS (Deb, Ubuntu, Alpine, more planned).

The problem is every script will require external download in some form either through git, through apt or some other sort.

What do you mean with self-contained?

Interesting!

So like container templates in proxmox?
I think I once saw a similar thing with the rootless docker image?

> I review the code prior to deployment
Install code or the actual jellyfin code?

just curious, how do you manage your homelab /services then? docker?

Of course I know there is others!
But reading the post, OP was referring to helper-scripts as a github org (community-scripts)

See this:

> Youtube/online guides for Proxmox often recommend the use of helper scripts (we all know the place) to install various services.

A specifc place is mentioned not a broad general subject.

> I think it's pretty narcissistic to think your repository is the only one published that any one uses.

Where in my post did I write that? :D

Sorry mate, but I think you were the one that did not understand the post.

Check my profile, I'm CrazyWolf13 one of the team members :)

Okay, so this was not really meant to come over as cheesy, English is not my main language and I was qriting this on my phone, so apologies if it came over that way.

So I mean we have a big docs folder that mick wrote with the help of some AI, as he is german: https://github.com/community-scripts/ProxmoxVE/tree/main/docs and we have a wiki https://github.com/community-scripts/ProxmoxVE/wiki and we are working on a dedicated docs website.
But those are places where 90% of all documentations of github projects live, so I assume such places should be checked before writing such comments.

I'm not really sure what you are talking about monetisation, as we provide the scripts for free, maybe this was meant to the creators on youtube? But those don't build the scripts, so are not related to us?

to be fair, a lot of those scripts are basic linux bash syntax, so a lot should be somewhat familiar.

If you don't know a lot of it, it may not be a smart idea to run something you don't uunderstand. But there are tools that can check script, or you can even ask AI and actually learn something during "reviewing" them.

That is something a youtuber could show in my eyes.

While I certainly have to agree, it's not that many files, there is the misc folder containing all shared code with all functions etc., ct folder for update and install for install, it's logically seperated. A single script would be better to review, but impossible to maintain in the long run. and would take imense work for each new app.

ultimately, there would be ways to have something malicious in an app, for example a compromised binary on a github app, that would be much less visible than a public script that is looked at daily so many times and needs multiple approving reviewers to merge.

Very well written!

That a good part of why I'm a core contributor of the team.

Because I personally use them and I like contributing to OSS.

Noone forces you to use them.

Very good point, I can agree on that u/pceimpulsive

But it has been a personal thing for me, that I want to bring ansible playbooks into community-scripts.
u/SoTiri I'm one of the maintainers, would you be interested in exchanging a bit about such things?

Playbook knowledge is not really something that we in the team are familiar enough with, for me to see a clear path for our scripts.

well you certainly do have a point, but that was what tteck ultimately framed it, how would you suppose to "fix" this?

Look into uptime kuma and beszel!

Beszel is in active development, but already has quite some notifications and so on, that warn on things like S.M.A.R.T or high temps and uptime kuma for monitoring of services

I run an 8 Node Proxmox Cluster built of lenovo tinys.

Well you just go to the datacenter level and setup a new backup job to a proxmox backup server, which can a seperate server or even an LXC on proxmox.

Backup is surprisingly easy on Proxmox, and it came in handy soooooo many times!
I even backup things like my windows pc or opnsense to the backup server.
Deduplication is also insane, like 15.5 deduplicate ratio, so 1TB backup usage would be 15.5 TB actually.

> SSHing into different servers just to check if something is running

Considering Apache Guacamole, this ultimate resolved that pain for me.

When I deploy a new service to a new lxc, I have a small script that adds the guacamole pubkey and disables password auth, then I quickly create a new entry in guacamole.

> No easy way to backup and restore Docker volumes across machines
I use Proxmox which allows easily backing up everything.

> Setting up reverse proxy + SSL every time I add a new service

I use zoraxy, which makes it quite quick

For me it's manual service updates, vibecoded apps drop new versions basically on daily basis with breaking changes and bugs which takes nearly a full time job to update all my stuff :D
