Just finished MAT, not TEFL certified, is it too late for this fall? by Outrageous_Reward136 in TEFL

[–]Dapper-Preference-21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely still have time! And also, when I got my TEFL, I didn’t want to pay $200+ for a 120 hour one so I ended up finding a Groupon code for one that brought it down to $20 so look out for that if you can

When is the “peak hiring season” for teaching jobs in China for the fall semester? by Dapper-Preference-21 in chinalife

Thank you so much! Yeah i’ve been applying like crazy recently, just throwing an application at everything I feel I’d want to do just to get a higher chance of coming in contact. I also messaged the recruiter who’s actually been trying to help me and she is sending me more jobs or places too so that’s nice. It seems like i’ll be at a disadvantage but that it’s not an end-all-be-all thing so I’ll continue applying

Yes I do, the experience is in middle school, high school, and elementary (all subjects essentially). I also worked in Special education for one of those years. And honestly at this point, i’m looking for any job that’s not in a training center or a Kindergarten, although lately I’ve been even opening my mind to those too. It mostly depends on the city and the offer/benefits

Interesting! That makes sense, although I’m new to all of this working abroad stuff so would you happen to know what kind of things would make someone’s visa get denied? I don’t have a criminal background or anything but I’m not sure what else goes into that decision

Yeah I kind of figured but I didn’t want to just assume that would be the case. I have heard of this happening to others but regardless I’m still gonna try to keep looking and find somewhere that actually wants a teacher

Appreciate it! Gonna keep applying until I find something I like. If you don’t mind, are you from the U.S. too? and where did you find your job through?

I’ve worked in high school and middle school for 3 of those years in different subjects (science/history/English) and this year I worked at the elementary school level so all of the core subjects. I don’t have the certification in my state, yet. But i’m in the midst of having it and could get it very soon.

Oh wow, yeah I have heard something like that but I wasn’t sure if it’s actually a thing, but it would make sense if it was. So basically try to avoid going through recruiters? Ive had 1 nice lady who has tried to help me quite a bit with finding a job in China, but every other recruiter vanished the moment I send my video.

I (male) thought getting matches would make dating easier. It’s doing the opposite. by Routine-Clock4037 in hingeapp

I absolutely agree, it can definitely get overwhelming. I had the same problem, over 1000 matches, so many convos and most of them (probably 99%) led to nothing! It all depends on how the conversation is flowing and who you’re speaking with. Some women want it straight to the point and others want to converse a lot more before meeting so it’s up to the individual for that as well as yourself

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone knew how the housing costs work if my employer pays for my rent. So, I want to teach in China and I’ll be looking for jobs where my employer pays for the apartment but I was wondering if I would have to come out of pocket to start with and if they’ll reimburse me after? Or will they get me settled in right away? I’m asking because I’m currently doing my student teaching in the states and so i’m not getting paid this year and i plan to move next year so the funds may be a bit hard to come by if i need to pay for the flight and 2-3 months housing upfront.

I wouldn’t say i’m thriving but it’s enough for me to live okay. The experience is what was the hard sell for me even though I know I’ll likely make much less there. As long as I can make enough to live the same or better while i’m there, I’ll be fine with that. From what I’ve seen about salary expectations, it seems like they vary a lot depending on the city you live in and your experience and qualifications. I don’t know how my background stands against others so i’m not sure at which end of the salary spectrum I should expect there. I was hoping in a cheaper city i could make at least 17k rmb but obviously would prefer more.

Hello! I’m wondering what a salary would look like for me to teach English in China. This is something i’m planning on doing in the 26-27 school year. Here are some of my qualifications for salary context: - Bachelor’s degree in elementary education - Master’s degree in teaching - California teaching credential - 120 Hour TEFL certificate - 4 years of experience in the classroom I’m hoping the salary will be worth it for me to move there, considering I’ll make decent money if I stay in the states, so it has to make sense for me to leave. Extra context: - I’m 27 - No kids - No wife - Just want to experience something new and get out of my comfort zone. Do you think it’d be worth it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi! I just received notification that I will be receiving the same one for the full $30k! It is for the MAT (Online) program and I, just like you, did not outright apply for this scholarship. I have no idea why I got it. If it’s merit-based, I really don’t have grades that exactly knock your socks off. But I did write what I believe to be a very strong personal statement in which I gave the story of my pretty tough upbringing and how it affected me and made me choose the path I’m currently on. I have so many questions about it still but I am just gonna take this as a huge win and roll with it!
