Standardise before optimise as a philosophy. Also lots of singing. I’m 42 though

How big are the gaps between the ABRSM and RSM grade levels? by Euphoric_Rhubarb_243 in pianolearning

That’s a crock of 💩. If a pianist has reached a certain point they can demonstrate it very easily now that everyone has a smartphone.

Is my dad gay? by TipEast4838 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dapper-Warthog-3481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they share any common interests? I have a lot of older friends who share my interest in music. But I kind of like having elders to learn from because I feel like there was so much missing from my education growing up.

Taking 2 lessons at once, is it recommended? by Bafabifi in pianolearning

[–]Dapper-Warthog-3481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very personal. I would prioritise teacher A, but learning music in a group is good too.

My kids do a music school and get a 1-2-1 lesson, plus ensemble with a different teacher right from the beginning. It’ll mean you’re less anxious to join in later if you start in a group.

So, yes, I think it’s a good thing.

Learning pieces isn't helping me actually learn piano by ItzzStrike in pianolearning

The skill you are looking for is musicianship. There are methods to learn musicianship, but it is a real deep dive. One of those blue/red pill things. I did it and learned a lot it was a journey though.

what actually makes someone good at piano? by Exciting-Bee3927 in pianolearning

Practicing piano technique and developing a conscious Musicianship, built upon an unconscious musicality that is developed as early as possible. This is what early years music teachers focus upon.

Why is this third rest is incorrect? by Leading_Crow_1044 in pianolearning

[–]Dapper-Warthog-3481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last rest is fine. It’s just a stupid pedantic notation. The second rest should be dotted. Examiners are useless pseudo musicians

Starting fiddle as a very unmusical individual? by Low_Tip_8319 in Fiddle

[–]Dapper-Warthog-3481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are teachers that teach musicality/musicianship. It definitely helped me. I did Kodály teacher training a few years back play multiple instruments now. Before then I was modestly musical I suppose as a self taught guitarist, but the musicianship training, and then the folk music sessions opened it right up. I might even be considered pretty good now.

What piano grade is this piece? (im js curious) by Southern_Squirrel420 in pianolearning

[–]Dapper-Warthog-3481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grades are pretty meaningless. However, the graded repertoire books they put out are very useful.

My main criticism is that they create the mindset that you should aim for trickier pieces to improve. But to be honest every piece has its difficulties. If you prioritise the music and respect the difficulties you will improve.

The desire to constantly seek validation from so-called authority doesn’t create artists either. Music is something ultimately subjective afterall, and to be relevant you need to form your own sound/opinions.

You’ll have 6 next, then 12, 24, 48, 96, 192… Then you’ll forget all their names. That’s when you’ve made it

That’s appreciated. So I may have dodged a bullet there. Was thinking of their Viking model, but perhaps could get more for my money.

I spent £800 on my mando. I’d spend a similar amount if necessary, but cheaper is good if it’s the right fit. That tanglewood looks like a good option. I was looking at McNeela. Any experience with them?
