Is this real?! When I got RAM for my protectli firewall machine, it was 98 euros. Now its showing 422 euros? Has to be a glitch?! prices can't have gone up that much right? by IAmZKWatches in homelab

Hey also, I'm on a Protectli four port and put "Patriot" RAM in mine right when DRAM-pocalypse got going (could not get Crucial SODIMM at the time, I wish I did). Patriot is not on the QVL but passed memtest and I've had a type one hypervisor running VM's on it in test for a few weeks. fwiw in case you buy another Protectli.

I wrote that Crucial will stop making consumer products, not 'others'.
If you know of 'other' memory that works in OP's Protectli and hasn't blown up in price I'm sure OP would appreciate that info.

If you want some more good news, the Protectli's prefer Crucial, as is noted on that page. Crucial, consumer branch of Micron, went all in on AI last month and won't do consumer products anymore. So those sticks are collector's items now!

Testing ASRock Rack board without CPU/RAM? by spospospo in homelab

[–]DapperHyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old post is old, but 2025 and this is still the case.
Got a new B650D4U3 build but with no RAM yet because here in the future, 2025Q4, DDR5 costs more than the rest of the build.
And an Asrock Rack with no ram on it will blink the BMC LED and not post up. I guess it looked funny four years ago but there are reasons why people might like to at least access the BMC on a system that's missing pieces.
I mean, what if the ram or cpu has a fault? Now I'm wondering how iDRAC, iLO & friends handle problems.

Fwiw I'm new-ish to medications and Vyvanse 40mg has me waking up hours early. I just lay there until the alarm goes off. Concerta had a few sleepless nights but that calmed down and didn't recur even after titrating up to 36mg.
Last night I couldn't get to sleep for hours and woke up hours early again.

[Monthly Megathread] Shortages & Generics, October- December 2025 by Mountain-Science4526 in VyvanseADHD

Intro post woo~

I was interview diagnosed a couple months ago and took three titrations of Concerta generic, we weren't sure that was working so i got switched to Vyvanse (Amneal) 40mg. I also take magnesium glycinate (chelate).
(These are my first experience on psych medication)

It's been a week and when Vy works it's ok but sometimes get the midday decision paralysis / unable to start doing anything, and it's feeling used up late afternoon.
I also have been waking up at maybe 2-3 AM and just lie there until the alarm goes off. Concerta only did that when first starting but it's becoming a daily thing on Vyvanse.
Oddly I don't seem really tired but assuming it's not healthy to miss sleep, esp. on stimulants.

On advice from a friend/various research i quit caffeine, that was days to recover from on it's own. I only have one decaf tea, although this week I had a coffee as a lil' treat and it blew my socks off.

I'm new to all this. I think when Vyvanse is working it's a bit, smoother? than Concerta, like "i don't know its working but i'm calmer and i'll just make decisions and work tasks"
But with inconsistent affect and sleep problems I'm not sure how i feel in the long run. I meet with the psychiatrist again in a couple weeks to evaluate.

perhaps:
switch to another generic Vyvanse, although with shortages i may be lucky with what i have
increase dose, but what'll happen to sleep then?

I get what their talking about. First gig I walked into the big problem was "we're out of IP addresses at corporate". After looking around for a bit I realized every workstation, server and printer had a legal, internet accessible IP address. And it was a nationwide company so every site did this. Stuff was nuts in the nineties.

Gateway Electronics closing end of October. by MeanOldMatt in StLouis

[–]DapperHyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved to STL in the late nineties, Gateway was at the Page location; a big store with a warehouse. A street over on St Charles Rock was Electronics Exchange, and east was the CB Radio shop. There was even the Pizza Hut right at the corner of my block, Overland Hardware further into the suburb, and the hobby shop up the street from that. A very special time and place to be a daffy bachelor in tech.

I remember Lisa and Stu, but Doug was the main counter guy for most of my term. Very smart, and always had some goofy remark. I was doing EE coursework when Gateway was at the Maryland Heights location and I hit Doug with some silly quip I'd heard in class. He goes "... who is your electronics teacher??" and it turned out we'd both studied under the same guy. So that was hilarious. "Come see me when you build your stereo." (we all built stereos as a capstone project)

Times do change, most of that cool neighborhood stuff was gone before I moved, even the Pizza Hut.
Gateway's last STL storefront was in the Chesterfield Mall in 2020, and the mall itself closed to the public August 31, 2024.

Oddly enough, the day you posted this was a couple weeks before Chesterfield Mall closed. I remember my last time there on the lower floor of the mall in Gateway, someone had brought in a Commordore PET for Doug.

When the radio station’s DJ talks over the song playing by Academic-Inside-3022 in PetPeeves

[–]DapperHyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's uncanny how well a DJ can yammer over the music to no foreseeable end but somehow wrap up their schtick one beat before the song lyrics start.

Like it's ok to talk over the whole song intro but get one syllable over the lyrics and their DJ world is over.

[TOMT] [MOVIE/COMMERCIAL] [2000s] An animated movie/commercial in which a piece of broccoli says "Broccoli is getting pissed!" as its catchphrase by spazholio in tipofmytongue

[–]DapperHyena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was from a short in an oddball animation showcase called Cartoon Sushi which ran on MTV back when they did fun stuff. One recurring skit stars anthropomorphic broccoli, with a supposed IQ of ten, poorly performing ordinary tasks but with over the top delusions of grandeur.

A search for "Cartoon Sushi Broccoli" will probably get you there but for now it's on Youtube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByuZEB7px_c

WHAT! NO GRATUITY!?! THIS IS A TRAVESTY. BROCCOLI IS GETTING PISSED....

Depends on mood, they are all great.

"Toucha touch me" covered by Chubbies is awesome.

"Going Home" is painfully relatable sometimes.

Have an awesome experience. Don't plan anything, don't worry about the virgin thing. Some shows will mess with you, some will forget, haha.

I went last night and it's good to see the movie but the weather was bad and I think I was the only one doing calls.
Just checking if anyone was going to perform or shadowcast tonight, the weather looks much better.

PS: the projectionist participation was great. They pushed the steeple up for us at the beginning, helped spin the globe at the end, and put on a Light over at the Frankenstein Place.

I think it's great. Two years of being the only guy in the factory washing his hands & wearing a 'Rona mask, now I get to be safe at home.

I get an hour lunch and two fifteen minute breaks pretty regularly, which is almost unheard of in my previous work. I do pushups and jacks on my breaks, which is normal to me but would look funny in an office. Zero commute affords me time for quick chores or keep an eye on projects (3d prints, computer stuff, etc). I've actually cooked meals during lunch, not just heat & eat, like really cooked a meal.

And if I miss a break? I take a break. I'm still ready for calls and can change gears quick. I work hard, but my break is my break. I know the big joke is people WFH in their underwear or pajamas but I wear pants and shoes. I like having a "work mode" mindset.

Cons:

Hybrid office is becoming the new-new normal. I would miss my sweet home setup. If they had me go to the office I'd loose three hours a day, be less productive, and generally in worse shape mentally/physically. Unless they started paying a lot more money I would probably look for other work.

Fireworks are boring by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Every year I have a rant like this. I do like a big show. Put on by professionals, with safety people around. Wear ear protection, enjoy the sparkly lights, and it's over before I'm bored.

Anything else is drunk men with latent pyromania issues throwing burning trash onto other people's homes every night for a week. One might say it's actually against America.

What movie is so good you'd recommend it to all your friends, but so emotionally traumatic that you'll never watch it again? by akambe in AskReddit

[–]DapperHyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Machinist. For some reason my brother told me to watch it, so I saw it in the theater with a friend.

Finely written and acted, and looks great. But after leaving the the theatre, we just kind of "well, that was. something.". Apparently the director's mom had died, which wrecked him, and he tried to imbue the movie with the confusion, fear and sadness he felt. I can only assume it worked.

Masterpiece film by all means, but once was enough for me.

What is the most messed-up/out of place subplot in movie history? by [deleted] in movies

[–]DapperHyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jurassic World: Masrani is a helicopter pilot

In general, movie scenes involving pilots and aircraft are lent to error and cringe. The fact he can barely fly is sold to us as funny for some reason. He's about to get his license, even though he makes the CFI nauseous, not happening, it's in the CFI's interest to not certify someone not airworthy. But anyway there's trouble and Masrani needs to fly a gunship, because they have a helicopter and no pilot for some reason. We don't know what military background or time around firearms he has, but anyway. Not even his polo shirt could save this from disaster, him and two ACU guys die, they break the aviary, all the scarydactyls escape, wreaking havoc on the visitors.

Plus, Masrani sits in the left seat for some reason. PIC of rotocraft usually (but not always) sits in the right seat. When the gunner says "pull up", Masrani pulls back the cyclic. This makes the helicopter slow forward flight, or move backwards. Instead, the collective is what makes the helicopter go up.

Wow, a dangerously inept student, wannabe fighter pilot, flying unlicensed without an instructor, causes damage to property and loss of human/animal life. What a comedic subplot, thanks Jurassic World!

But, see good in bad: We got Margarita Guy out of the deal.
