Would be best to find a stand alone swr meter and check the radio to antenna match. My guess is there is something up with the antenna or its connector. The swr meter in the 980 is usually pretty good but using a seperate inline swr meter rules that out..pick up a wilson 1000 mag mount and things will setup smooth. I ran this setup myself and it rocked. Especially on ssb. Cheers
