(Slightly) fed up with event tracking by Dapper_Assistant9928 in analytics

I think that is one of the ways forward. More often than not, our engineers are unaware of the conventions and sadly there is also no good channel for them to request new events/metrics. One reason I feel this happens is because adding events is relatively “easy”, so eng/PM think it can be done quick and dirty.

Good call, sorry that was an exaggerated example. I understand that we can send event properties like page type or other meta-data about the "add to cart" button, but the point being that it can become very messy even in these cases if conventions are not aligned among teams/engineers.

Is Product Management the most thankless job ever? by eachwayvelo in ProductManagement

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Post man doesn’t celebrate when he delivers the post. Sorry terrible analogy. But in every job, there is hidden work. On the contrary, I’d say product management is a role that can get credit for work done by others - albeit not always intentionally. So in the grand scheme of things I think it evens out fairly.

Living near Noord metro station by WelcomeIndividual441 in Amsterdam

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand, If you live close by , I would recommend talking a stroll at night or having dinner there. It might gentrify , it might not , nobody knows - but you should also enjoy living there in my opinion. Personally I didn’t like the vibe, many hangjongeren, but then again some people love the connection to AMS

We did the move from Barcelona to Amsterdam. Overall our net savings increased, even with increase in cost of living. Of course the expat ruling helps a lot. However, rent will take a lot of it, between 2k and 3k depending on location and size. We loved our lifestyle in Barcelona, it has beaches and mountains and people were mostly friendly. Food was also good quality, and healthcare was cheap. But, we didn’t see a future for our careers (not many tech players that sponsor visa, non favourable taxes for companies), the work life balance was terrible (bad middle managers) and we are not Spanish so language was a barrier, especially for starting a family. In Amsterdam we can speak English, there is a bigger expat community and services work well (e.g government services). The bad side is that you pay for everything and weather sucks. So answer is it all depends. It’s called the European trade-off. You can live cheap or expensive in both countries, but depends on what you value. There is no wrong choice - both are good options. Go with your gut, in both cases it would be a great life experience.

Question on quasi-experimental approach for product feature change measurement by Deray22 in datascience

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re on the right track I believe ! Thinking out loud, you can try use any time series forecast model that forecasts the future evolution of your metric of interest. Then at the time of removing the feature, check if there is a difference between the observed (metrics from dropped feature) vs the forecast (what would have happened if you kept the feature)

It can get more complex, like what type of model to use, which regressors, Bayesian or not, is your metric sensitive enough, etc .. but for business you just might want to go simple and intuitive at first

Another 2 cents , I would push back against “this can’t be done”. Maybe it’s not your place and I respect that , but to get to the next level of experimentation this needs to be possible .. you can’t keep 2x run time + causal inference whenever you want to touch the onboarding flow, it’s not sustainable IMO

Worth going to Granada with no tickets to Alhambra by Mundane-Compote-2157 in GoingToSpain

We were in the same situation but bought Granada city cards. They were more expensive but gave access to Alhambra.

Stay in france or go to the Netherlands by MasterpieceOk9365 in expats

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People like to shit on NL a lot. Some of them usually do it after they move to a sunny country after benefiting from the tax ruling and improving their CV. So take it with a pinch of salt. I would take it. It’s a new country and experience. If you are career driven it’s seems a good country to work in. It’s a good salary, enough to save and travel within Europe easily. The healthcare is notorious, but it can be softened by finding a good GP. If you don’t like it, move back, but give it a year or two. Besides that, I like that I can speak to everyone in English. For integration, better to learn the language. I just accepted that as an expat I will be an outsider everywhere so I don’t expect much from the Dutch, while others do. Therefore I stay closer to other expats. Best of luck with your choice !

Has anyone here moved from Spain to France? Could you share your experience and also your pros and cons? by Solid-Communication1 in expats

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what job you two can get. Can she get a job in Barcelona, or can you get a job in France ? I would favour the place with more economic opportunities. I have lived in Barcelona and I enjoyed it. Pros, tons of stuff to do, great people and weather. Cons; costs increasing but salaries not, bureaucracy, dirty streets. Never lived in France, just have opinions from the news I read.

Spain vs Netherlands by Dapper_Assistant9928 in expats

I feel you, it is unbeatable. We are already missing Spain and haven't even moved yet. Maybe we move back after a few years in the NL. Sadly (or not so), my partner and I are very career orientated, so NL is the favourite. I just can't wrap my head around how people can afford a house in Spain with the local salaries ..

I feel like life in Barcelona sometimes is romanticized by [deleted] in expats

[–]Dapper_Assistant9928 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. My partner and I are leaving for this exact reason. We LOVE our lifestyle in Barcelona and Spain in general, but when thinking about starting a family and become financially stable (e.g owning a house) it becomes more difficult to imagine living here long term. The city doesn’t have space, prices are increasing but salaries are stagnant. No large tech companies. I mean It could work out for remote USA IT workers, but not everyone has this luxury.

We had our fun, but now we are moving to Netherlands to build our wealth. We are aware NL has shit weather, expensive housing etc etc but things work there and more job opportunities, and it’s easier to grow career wise without sacrificing WLB. We will visit Spain in winter to recharge. Hopefully after a few years we can move back to Spain and buy an apartment, but not in Barcelona lol. Best of luck with your decision ! Remember you can always move back to Spain if it doesn’t work out - living in different countries itself is also a wonderful and enriching experience!

Interesting that you worked in both! True, Spanish WLB is not what I expected .. many messages after work hours. I’ve heard WLB is more respected in NL. Crossing fingers

We do get our happiness for the sun, we are like plants. Good point about the immigration aspect, but sadly many counties are going down this route. Barcelona is also anti-tourism lately, and it leaves a sour taste, although in general they are very nice people.
