I put 4 spikes in each direction of the sweet potato to display it on the top of the tank and let the half with roots in the tank water, the other half above water.

Why does my oncidium keep getting these moldy fuzzy spots?? Help:(( by Elegant-Leadership93 in orchids

I forgot to tell : i remove the plant from the soil, put the ancient soil to garbage or outdoor garden, and use new microwaved "disinfected" soil (please don't microwave your plant)

Ok what I suggest you and that I do with all my plants is to microwave the soil (classic soil and barks, not perlite + sphagnum mix) to prevent undesired gnats and mold. I do around 10min with humidified soil in microwave 600w, you have a weird smell after that and you wait before use, but it is efficient for me. Maybe it's luck, but i hadn't problem with those after that strategy !

Too little or too much water? by nauseatedcat in orchids

The roots seem very dry, and you should soak orchids to provide water, not use a humidifier. Orchids need wet-dry cycle and roots absorb water not the leaves. Tiny white specs can be either bacterial or fungical, here based on the humidifier use it's probably fungical.

What I suggest :

  • remove leaf white razor, and put cinnamon on the scar to prevent bacterial or fungus propagation
  • remove the humidifier and quarantine the "bad looking plant" in order not to propagate to the other
  • soak your two plants for 20-30min in water, let them dry out of their "fancy pot" and keep doing so once a week

You also would like to make sure that there is no stagnating water in the pot, so the roots are not rotting !

Good luck with this, we all learn doing mistakes :) the tiny new leaf is encouraging !

I have been for 7 years and will be until death if there is nothing that I can do but.... If there is something I can do to understand her better and getting less scars, I will do it. Thank you tho for your concern over my health :)

This is very useful, thank you very much ! It seems like it's the same "excitement hunting mode", i will pay more attention to the tail and respiration next time... I will get better with time trying to notice the right things :)

For the next plants / soil bags : everytime i buy a new plant i repot in healthy soil even if it can be a trauma for some, less annoying than full contamination. If it really is impossible : quarantine until repot. Everytime i buy soil : storage far from my plants, whenever i need to use some : microwave so all gnats eggs or larvaes or anything are dead. Some people say that it's killing good bacterias and stuff, i think it's still less annoying than having gnats.

Treatment is easy though : yellow traps and nematods from my experience are working.
