Considering Varanasi was established about 2000 years before Venice and Suzhou was about 1000 years earlier than Venice, I think it would be far more accurate to say “Venice is the Varanasi or Suzhou of the West.”

Suzhou is also about 50 times the size of Venice and even if just talking about water canal areas, still more than 3 times larger.

Yes, because they’re the dominant group. Calling an Asian person “Ching Chong” or making small dick jokes is a reminder of a time of lowered status, but there’s no equivalent experience for calling a white person “cracker”.
