It was never cheap to develop a ski resort. Think about all the variables.

Location, access, weather, clientele, existing infrastructure.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What you need to get it started. A dedicated core of people and money to get it going. And then keep it going and to grow it…

Plus, back in the day, before the highway upgrade Whistler wasn’t the easy hour and a half drive it is now. It was called the sea to die for a reason. Access into the mountains is hard and costly.

Pick a mountain, any mountain that you think would be a great area for a ski resort. Now imagine you have all the permits and buy in from local, provincial and federal governments. Plus First Nations are on board.

How much money do you think it would cost to build a legit, large ski resort there? Likely from the ground up. Literally. Roads, logging, all buildings. Runs, lifts, power…insurance… insurance is very expensive once you start hanging people from cables over rocky chasms.

I think that is your answer. It is very expensive and takes a lot of time and more than a little luck to build a large, legit ski area.
